PARA ALÉM DO PÃO NU. DO CONTO “A SANDÁLIA DO PROFETA MAOMÉ”, DE MOHAMED CHOUKRI Felipe Benjamin Francisco RESUMO: Este artigo propõe uma tradução à língua portuguesa do conto Na‘l annabiyy, “A sandália do Profeta Maomé”, de Mohamed Choukri. Trata-se da primeira tradução ao português de um trabalho do escritor marroquino feita diretamente do árabe. Pretende-se, assim, reaproximar o leitor brasileiro a um ilustre nome do panorama literário do Marrocos, revelando-lhe seu lado contista. O texto estrutura-se em três partes: i) apresentação do perfil de Choukri e seu estilo; ii) discussão geral sobre as decisões tradutórias adotadas; e iii) tradução do conto acompanhada de seu original árabe. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Marrocos; Mohamed Choukri; Literatura árabe; Tradução literária. ABSTRACT: This article proposes a translation into the Portuguese language of the short story Na‘l annabiyy (The Prophet’s Sandal), by Mohamed Choukri. This is the first direct translation from Arabic into Portuguese of one of his works. Thus, it intends to reconnect the Brazilian reader to an illustrious name of the Moroccan literary panorama, bringing to light his short story writer side. The text is divided into three parts: i) a presentation of Choukri's profile and literary style; ii) a general discussion about the translation decisions adopted; and iii) the translation of the work accompanied by its original Arabic edition. A Case of the Moroccan Writer Muhammad. Šukrī Abstract The history of books that were rejected, condemned, banned or censored in various parts of the world for political, social, religious or sexual reasons is very long. Whereas, however, people in the West have learned to value controversial literature despite its contentious or provocative na- ture, the societies in the Middle East still have problems with accepting certain sorts of literary works. There are many publications in the Arab World that sum up to a category I call unwanted literature because the conservative society in which they were produced doesn’t want to accept them as their own heritage. One of the most recent and striking examples of such divergence of opinion between the Western and Eastern readers are the works of the Moroccan author Mo- hamed Choukri and especially his autobiography al-Ëubz al-ÍÁfÐ published in 1973 in English translation by Paul Bowles as For Bread Alone long before the Arabic version could appear. As we know literature is, apart from all its functions, a means for creating and maintaining social identity, be it religious, ethnic or national. Al-Rajhi Assistant Professor of linguistics Department of English Language and Literature 1. Introduction The present study focuses on Thematic Progression in narrative texts translated from Arabic into English. The goal is to analyze and compare thematic progression in Arabic narrative texts and their translation into English. The patterning of theme through a text is one means of structuring the text as a message, so that the addressee is aware of what the addressor is trying to communicate. The most influential thematic patterning is associated with (Danes 1974) who belongs to the Prague tradition. Thematic progression (TP) is defined as “the choice and ordering of utterance themes, their mutual concatenation and hierarchy, as well as their relationships to the hypertheme of the superior text units (such as paragraph, chapter…) to the whole of the text, and to the situation.” (P.114) The definition of a sentence theme is presented in Halliday’s 1967-68 article “Notes on Transitivity and theme in English.” Later Fries (1981) explained that the individual sentence themes collectively may form noticeable patterns that play a text- structuring role, and Fries (!981) is often cited by Halliday (1985) as a model of explaining the function of theme. -

Since the mid-twentieth century, due to growing interest in Islam and the Arab world on the global scene, the Arab side of North African identity has been given paramount recognition. More often than not, North Africa is considered part of the Middle East rather than an integral member of an African community, although in spite of shifting political winds in recent years, the literatures that have emerged from North Africa have been firmly embedded in African literary traditions since antiquity, and share strong links with their sub-Saharan counterparts. -
