Love, death, religion, nature and nationalism became the great themes of the romantic period. The treatment of these themes by the precursors of romanticism was later interpreted and developed by the major romantic poets, Alphonse de Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset and Alfred de Vigny. -

An examination of a number of major works of poetry, drama, and prose will help us how these two different but related concepts evolved and continue to influence us today. Open to graduate and upper level undergraduate students. For upper level undergraduates who have already completed all major requirements, this course can count for SUNY Cortland’s graduate program. General Alexandre Gefen, Réparer le monde: la littérature française face au XXIe siècle, Corti, 2017, 392 pp., argues that contemporary French literature has undergone a therapeutic turn, with both writing and reading now conceived in terms of healing, helping, and doing good. G. defends this thesis with extraordinary thoroughness as he examines the turn’s various guises: as objects of literature’s care here feature the self and its fractures; trauma, both individual and collective; illness, mental and physical; mourning and forgetfulness, personal and historical; and endangered bonds, with humans and beyond, on local and global scales. This amounts to what G. calls a new ‘paradigme clinique’ and, like any paradigm shift, this one appears replete with contradictions, tensions, and opponents, not least owing to the residual influence of preceding paradigms; G.’s analysis is especially impressive when unpicking the ways in which contemporary writers negotiate their sustained attachments to a formal, intransitive conception of literature, and/or more overtly revolutionary political projects. His thesis is supported by an enviable breadth of reference: G. lays out the diverse intellectual, technological, and socioeconomic histories at work in this development, and touches on close to 200 contemporary writers. Given the broad, synthetic nature of the work’s endeavour, individual writers/works are rarely discussed for longer than a page, and though G.’s commentary is always insightful, specialists on particular authors or social/historical trends will surely find much to work with and against here. -

Claude LÉVI-STRAUSS, y est venu prendre séance le jeudi 14 juin 2012 et a prononcé le discours suivant : Mesdames et Messieurs de l’Académie, Il y a vingt-cinq ans, je suis entré sous cette Coupole pour la première fois. Je venais de publier un roman, vous m’aviez décerné un prix et invité, comme d’autres lauréats, à la séance publique annuelle. Elle était présidée par Claude Lévi-Strauss. En tant qu’étudiant en sociologie, à Beyrouth dans les années soixante, j’avais lu Du miel aux cendres, soigneusement annoté La Pensée sauvage, et participé à des débats autour de Race et Histoire . Votre confrère était pour moi, comme pour toute ma génération, un auteur emblématique ; et à l’entendre mentionner mon nom, puis le titre de mon roman, j’étais sur un nuage. Je n’attendais pas grand-chose de plus. Et certainement pas de me retrouver un jour au milieu de vous, pour prononcer son éloge, dans cette solennité, en faisant résonner mon accent. Après les roulements de tambours, les roulements de langue ! - 2 - Cet accent, vous ne l’entendez pas souvent dans cette enceinte. Ou, pour être précis, vous ne l’entendez plus. Car, vous le savez, ce léger roulement qui, dans la France d’aujourd’hui, tend à disparaître a longtemps été la norme. N’est-ce pas ainsi que s’exprimaient La Bruyère, Racine et Richelieu, Louis XIII et Louis XIV, Mazarin bien sûr, et avant eux, avant l’Académie, Rabelais, Ronsard et Rutebeuf ? Ce roulement ne vous vient donc pas du Liban, il vous en revient. -

Memory of the World International Register Collections of the 19th century of the Polish Historical and Literary Society / Polish Library in Paris / Adam Mickiewicz Museum (Poland) 2012-26 1.0 Summary (max 200 words) The Polish Library in Paris (Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris—BPP) was created in 1838 by Polish political émigrés who had found shelter in the French capital. This is where they could carry on various actions aiming at gaining back the independence of the State which had been lost at the end of the 18th century. Led by the wave of ideologies linked to independence and people’s freedom movements arisen in Europe in the early 19th century, it was established as a peaceful form aiming at fighting for freedom and independence. In the 19th century, Europe built places of memory such as libraries and archives in the independence States. At that time, the BPP acted as a means of substitution and continuity of the institutions destroyed by the foreign forces occupying the Polish territories. It came to birth thanks to the efforts carried out by the émigrés and the support of European intellectual elites as well as the authorities of the French State. The latter felt involved in the idea originating the creation of the BPP and they supported the action of a nation whose fight for independence, during the Uprising of 1831, had moved many European nations, aroused their admiration and strengthened their own aspirations for independence. The Polish Library gathered the scattered sources which enabled to document the history of Poland, along with the publications carried out by the emigration. -

Paris, jeudi 21 janvier 2016 Discours de Fleur Pellerin, ministre de la Culture et de la Communication à l’occasion de la cérémonie de remise des insignes d’Officier de Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres à S.A.R la Princesse de Hanovre Altesse, Chère Caroline de Hanovre, Entre le Palais Royal, où nous nous trouvons aujourd’hui, et ceux de Monte-Carlo que nous célébrons à travers vous, deux figures tutélaires, deux grands artistes font le lien. Cocteau, qui vécut ici dans sa « cave » de la rue de Montpensier, et contribua, durant les années folles à l’effervescence de l’Opéra. Cocteau qui marqua Monaco d’une trace indélébile avec La Dame de Monte Carlo, ce très beau texte que Poulenc transfigura bien des années plus tard. Colette, dont on peut encore apercevoir ici la marque durable, depuis les jardins, en levant les yeux vers l’aile nord. Dans cet appartement qu’occupe aujourd’hui le décorateur Jacques Grange, un C entrecroisé d’un soleil est aujourd’hui gravé au balcon de sa chambre. Colette, que votre aïeul, le Prince Pierre, fit venir jusqu’à lui de Saint-Tropez, pour compter enfin, disait- il, « une Goncourte » à Monaco. Colette et Cocteau ne furent pas les seuls à « faire » Monte-Carlo. Il y eut Diaghilev, Picasso, Gabrielle Chanel, et bien d’autres encore. Vous racontez si merveilleusement leur contribution à la vie artistique de la Principauté, dans cet article que vous avait publié il y a un an et demi dans Politique internationale, que je m’en serais voulue de ne pas les mentionner aujourd’hui. -

Chapter 4 “Young Phoenicians” and the Quest for a Lebanese Language: between Lebanonism, Phoenicianism, and Arabism Franck Salameh In the context of modern Middle Eastern history, the varied peoples of the “Greater Middle East” are often viewed through simplified notions of “Arab” and “Muslim,” sometimes to the neglect of other, pre-Arab pre-Muslim Middle Easterners otherwise lapsed from the prevalent paradigms on, of, and about the modern Middle East. To non-historians, a century or more of Western aca- demic interest in the region seems to have yielded little beyond clichés and assumptions referring to “‘Arabs,’ ‘Arab’ fears, ‘Arab’ hopes, ‘Arab’ concerns, and ‘Arab’ hang-ups – ‘Arab’ being the emblematic “be all end all” of all matters Middle East.”1 Yet there exists a vibrant and venerable Middle East outside the dominant platitudes about which traditional Middle East scholarship remains largely mute. It is within this context that this paper offers the suggestion that the prevalent assumptions about an essentially Arab (or uniformly Muslim) Middle East be confronted with a more culturally and religiously diverse Middle East. In line with this, this paper focuses on the so-called “Young Phoenicians” in Lebanon who in the early twentieth century put forward another interpreta- tion of the history of the region and of their region, foregrounding non-Arab and non-Muslim interpretations of it. 1 Young Phoenicians, Old Lebanese In Lebanon, the tendency towards valorising and celebrating the longue durée of Middle Eastern history and memory is referred to by the generic term ‘Phoenicianism’. For obvious reasons, from the perspective of the keepers of Arabist orthodoxy Phoenicianism is deemed problematic, because it rel- egates “Arabness” to a period – rather than an essence – of Lebanese history.
