Cardiff 19th Century Timeline Game education resource This resource aims to: • engage pupils in local history • stimulate class discussion • focus an investigation into changes to people’s daily lives in Cardiff and south east Wales during the nineteenth century. Introduction Playing the Cardiff C19th timeline game will raise pupil awareness of historical figures, buildings, transport and events in the locality. After playing the game, pupils can discuss which of the ‘facts’ they found interesting, and which they would like to explore and research further. This resource contains a series of factsheets with further information to accompany each game board ‘fact’, which also provide information about sources of more detailed information related to the topic. For every ‘fact’ in the game, pupils could explore: People – Historic figures and ordinary population Buildings – Public and private buildings in the Cardiff locality Transport – Roads, canals, railways, docks Links to Castell Coch – every piece of information in the game is linked to Castell Coch in some way – pupils could investigate those links and what they tell us about changes to people’s daily lives in the nineteenth century. Curriculum Links KS2 Literacy Framework – oracy across the curriculum – developing and presenting information and ideas – collaboration and discussion KS2 History – skills – chronological awareness – Pupils should be given opportunities to use timelines to sequence events. 74 THE DONCASTER HEADS 75 In late 2017 Doncaster Council commissioned Laurence Edwards to create a sculpture to celebrate its mining history. Little did he know he was about to embark on a transformative journey. This publication celebrates and marks the first phase of the project. The finished sculpture is due to be unveiled in May 2020. Collieries were the highest structures around: the headstocks with their spinning wheels, the For several months Laurence toured the pubs, clubs and community halls of the Doncaster region, speaking to miners and non-stop chunters of the winding engines. Power station cooling-towers made their own weather. Nodding donkeys pumped mining families in the city and its villages. Then he began a remarkable process, positioned somewhere between oral history drifts dry. Slagheaps leaked black streams, tracked with tyre-marks. I had a strong sense as a child of knowing only one storey and performance art. He would meet up to three mine-workers a day, and with each person would sit for two hours, modelling of the landscape, walking the surface above an invisible underworld of tunnels and shafts that ran for thousands of miles. -

Light Fantastic is a participatory festival with a central theme of orchestral music. The focus of the festival is a weekend of events around the country and broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 (24-27 June 2011), which the BBC hopes will bring it closer to its audience. The BBC is inviting applications from amateur ensembles to take part in BBC recording events across the UK - in Glasgow (5 June), Manchester (25/26 June), Cardiff (21/22 May), Exeter (5 June) and London (21/22 May). Recordings may be broadcast by BBC Radio 3 in the context of Light Fantastic. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1954-55 Disgrifiad / Description The parchment diploma of the University of Szeged, Hungary, conferring the degree of Doctor of Philosophy upon the testator, 13 June 1936 (Dept of Pictures and Maps). FLORENCE MARY HOPE 1955002 Ffynhonnell / Source The late Mrs Florence Mary Hope, Lampeter. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1954-55 Disgrifiad / Description A diary, 1886 (NLW MS 15605A), and a notebook recording wild flowers of Cardiganshire, written by the testatrix (NLW MS 15606B). A manuscript music book containing French and Italian songs set to music (NLW MS 15607A). Mrs Hope also bequeathed all her books to the National Library, of which about ten works were chosen for retention, most of them being old-time children's books (Dept of Printed Books). Of the others especial interest attaches to a copy of J. R. Planche's The Pursuivant of arms which is interleaved with manuscript notes and contains, besides, many manuscript corrections in the text. The books not needed are to be sold for the Library's benefit.
