Forest and Plant Communities of Mt Rainier • The zones show regular patterns that result in “associations” of certain shrubs and herbs relating to the dominant, climax tree species. • The nature of the understory vegetation is largely determined by the amount of moisture available and the microclimates that exist. Forest Zones of Mt Rainier • Western Hemlock Zone – below 3,000 ft • Silver Fir Zone – between 2,500 and 4,700 ft • Mountain Hemlock Zone – above 4,000 ft Since most of the field trips will start above 4,000 ft we will only discuss plants found in the Mountain Hemlock Zone and above. Magheru St., 410048, Oradea, Romania Abstract The present paper reunites the morphological and ecological description of the main species belonging to Potentilla genus present in "Alexandru Beldie" Herbarium from Romanian National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry "Marin Drăcea" (INCDS), Bucharest. Furthermore, the paper systemize the herbarium specimens based on species, harvest year, the place from where they were harvested and the specialist that gathered them. The first part of the article shortly describes the herbarium and its specific, together with a presentation of the material and method used for elaborating this paper. As such, the material that was used is represented by the 276 plates that contain the specimens of 69 species belonging to the Potentilla genus. Besides the description of harvested Potentilla species, the article presents the European map of their harvesting locations, together with a synthetic analysis of their harvesting periods. The paper ends with a series of conclusions regarding the analysis of the Potentilla genus species and specimens present in the herbarium. Key words: herbar, plante, flowers, frunze, Potentilla. Derge1 Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Division of Natural Heritage 217 Governor Street Richmond, Virginia 23219 ABSTRACT The Appalachian grizzled skipper (Pyrgus centaureae wyandot) was documented historically (primarily from shale barren habitats) in 11 counties in Virginia. Between 1992 and 2002, staff of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage, conducted 175 surveys for P. c. wyandot at 75 sites in 12 counties. The species was observed at only six sites during these surveys, representing two new county records. All observations since 1992 combined account for <80 individuals. Due to forest succession and threats from gypsy moth control measures, all recent sites for P. c. wyandot in Virginia may be degrading in overall habitat quality. (Phragmidiaceae, Pucciniales), causing witches’ brooms on Rosa bracteata Yoshitaka Ono Faculty of Education, Ibaraki University, 2-1-1 Bunkyo, Mito, Ibaraki 310-8512 Japan Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract—Caeomatoid rust infection has been observed on Rosa bracteata plants at a single site in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan, since 1995. The fungus (not previously known in Japan) was identified as Caeoma warburgiana by its characteristic systemic infection causing witches’ brooms and its spore morphology. Uredinial and telial sori were found on the leaves of the witches’ brooms of the infected rose plants at the same site in 2009. The urediniospores were pedicellate and echinulate. The teliospores were composed of two to four linearly arranged, thin-walled cells on a short pedicel. Caeoma-type aecia, Uredo-type uredinia and pedicellate teliospores with two to four linearly arranged cells are characteristic of the genus Kuehneola. Identical telia and teliospores were found in the lectotype of C. warburgiana. Caeoma warburgiana is recombined as Kuehneola warburgiana. Key words —Asia, life cycle, nomenclature, taxonomy Introduction Rosa bracteata is an evergreen perennial shrub, native of southern regions of China, growing in mixed forests, scrub, and sandy hills at low altitudes and seashores (Wu & Raven 2003). The plants also occur at coastal areas of Taiwan and adjacent islands of south Japan (Satake et al. 1989, Liu et al. 2000, Wu & Raven 2003). -

(WSSI) has conducted a habitat evaluation and search for the rough avens (Geum laciniatum) in Lake Accotink Park in Fairfax County, Virginia. This habitat evaluation and search was undertaken at the request of Fairfax County, because the rough avens had been recorded in the vicinity of Lake Accotink in the past. This report discusses the distribution and habitat associations of the rough avens, details the methodology of our habitat evaluation and search, and presents our findings and conclusions. Although habitat for this species is present within the study area, no rough avens were found during this search. General Distribution and Habitat Associations of the Rough Avens The rough avens is considered a rare species and is typically found in wet areas such as fens and meadows in the northern Piedmont and mountains of Virginia. It is usually found growing in calcareous or mafic soils, which are found in these regions of Virginia. In Virginia, it is known from six counties, including Augusta, Bath, Bland, Fairfax, Fauquier, and Tazewell (Harvill, et al, 1992; Virginia Botanical Associates, 2015). The rough avens has been recorded in 27 eastern and Midwestern states, and in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, Canada.
