Palju kultuuri on kivis pikkade ajastute rivis. palju kivi – kultuuris ajaloosündmusis suuris. Kivis peidus on aegadetagune elu ja juurdleva vaimu mõtiskelu; kivi peidab inimelu võlu ja valu – hingetuid kivi kuuldavasti ei talu. Late Medieval Hypocausts with Heat Storage in Estonia
Andres Tvauri LATE MEDIEVAL HYPO CAUSTS WITH HEAT STORAGE IN ESTONIA INTRODUCTION As often happens with archaeologists, the stimulus for writing this article was a discovery unexpectedly brought to light from under the ground. In autumn 2007, I had the opportunity to study a large medieval heat storage furnace (Figs. 1 and 2) constituting the central part of the hot air heating system, or hypo caust, of a former grooms’ building. It was unexpectedly unearthed in the course of construction work in the outer bailey of the medieval Order Castle of Viljandi.1 The furnace found in the Viljandi Castle was a nice but, in the context of Estonian medieval fi nds, rather ordinary discovery. In Old Livonia, roughly corresponding to the territory of present-day Estonia and Latvia, hot air heating systems in which the core was a furnace fi lled with large stones, making it possible to store heat and rid oneself of the need to con- stantly heat the furnace or the fi replace, was used in the 13th to the 16th centuries before the introduction of Dutch tile stoves in castles, monas- teries and in residential and public buildings in towns. Starting in the 1930s, such furnaces, or their archaeologically studied remains, have been found in numerous medieval buildings in Estonia. The furnace found in Viljandi induced me to look for literature about hypo causts with heat storage. With the assistance of my colleague Erki Russow, the most thorough paper on medieval hot air heating systems ever written soon landed on my desk – a thesis published by the Ger- man researcher Klaus Bingenheimer in 1998, Die Luftheizungen des Mittelalters. -

GENERAL INTEREST THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART,NEW YORK De Kooning: A Retrospective Edited and with text by John Elderfield. Text by Jim Coddington, Jennifer Field, Delphine Huisinga, Susan Lake. Published in conjunction with the first large-scale, multi-medium, posthumous retrospective of Willem de Kooning’s career, this publication offers an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the development of the artist’s work as it unfolded over nearly seven decades, beginning with his early academic works, made in Holland before he moved to the United States in 1926, and concluding with his final, sparely abstract paintings of the late 1980s. The volume presents approximately 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, covering the full diversity of de Kooning’s art and placing his many masterpieces in the context of a complex and fascinating pictorial practice. -

EÜL is very grateful for the support of the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe, Estonian National Foundation of Civil Society (Kodanikuühiskonna Sihtkapital), Estonian Ministry of Education and Research, Tallinn University and Tartu Mill. Welcome! Dear Friends from the European student movement, I am most happy to welcome you on behalf of Federation of Estonian Student Unions (EÜL) to the 35th European Students’ Convention (ESC) in Tallinn. EÜL is hosting ESC for the very first time and we have chosen our medieval yet high tech capital as the intriguing venue. The ESC “Inclusive Student Movement” concentrates on the safety and well- being of international students in the society and their inclusion in the student movement. EÜL sees problems with the latter aspects both in Estonia and in Europe at large. Together with globalization the internationalisation of higher education in Europe has increased rapidly. Each year there are more and more students who continue their studies abroad. Unfortunately, different societies are not always welcoming of international people, causing the students to experience discrimination in different forms. Furthermore not all higher education institutions are prepared to offer the necessary support and information needed to make the integration of international students and the overcoming of cultural barriers smooth. In addition, there is also a lack of representation of international students on the local, national and international level in the student bodies. The prior description paints a quite gloomy picture. We see there’s a lot of room for improvement. And there always will be because its like Don Quixote and his fights with the windmills. -

During about the quarter of the century that has elapsed after regaining independence, our scientific landscape has changed radically. The lion’s share of research work is integrated with providing university education. The targets for the following seven years were defined at the very start of the year, in the document adopted by Riigikogu (Parliament) on January 22, 2014 and entitled “Estonian research and development and innovation strategy 2014- 2020. Knowledge-based Estonia”. It starts with the acknowledgement familiar to all of us that the number and complexity of challenges faced by the society is ever increasing. -

Internship Report Master’s program in Architecture Internship title: Architect intern Company: Kavakava Architects (leading architects: Siiri Vallner, Indrek Peil) Place: Tallinn, Estonia Duration: 01.09.2018 – 28.02.2019 Tasks During 6 months, I have participated various works with different focuses and scales. I involved in the whole process of two architectural competitions, which took around 3 months in total. One competition was Viimsi Young Talent School. It’s a school project that we proposed a solution of integrating architecture and local topography. I helped developing site plan schemes, volume study with physical models and also the drawings of final submissions. We won the first prize for the competition. After getting the contract, my main task was to develop detail design for the school project. For example, I helped developing two concert halls in the project with the consult of acoustic engineers, also had to consider the topic of multifunction and seating types. Also, I helped doing renovation design for two cylindrical concrete oil tank that are part of the school project. Those old oil tanks are going to be transferred into classrooms with special functions. Another competition was Estonian Environment Ministry and Natural Museum. It is one of the biggest and most significant architecture competitions in Estonia in recent years. This competition was of bigger scale with a specific topic on environmental sustainability, as it was described in the competition brief that the buildings should be done mainly with wooden structure and fulfill near zero energy house standard. My tasks were developing the wooden structure and building façades. -
