SRI RAMANA JYOTHI JANUARY TO DECEMBER – 2009 JANUARY - 2009 ENLIGHTENMENT OF SRI RAMANA According to Katha Upanishad : ‘The atman is not attainable through recitation of the Vedas, nor by keen intellect, nor by often hearing of scriptures. He whom God chooses attains It. To him the atman reveals its form.’ And this is exactly what happened in case of Sri Ramana. The following is a summary of what he conveyed in Tamil to B.V. Narasimha Swami, his biographer. “One day I sat alone in my uncle’s house [at Maduari]. I was in my usual good health. Suddenly an unmistakable fear of death seized me. I felt I was going to die. Why I should have felt so cannot now he explained by anything felt in my body. Nor could I explain it to myself then. I did not trouble myself to discover if the fear was well grounded. I felt ‘I was going to die’ and at once set about thinking what I should do. I did not care to consult a doctor or elders or even friends. I felt I have to solve the problem myself then and there. “The shock of fear of death made me at once introspective or ‘introverted’. I said to myself mentally, i.e., without uttering the words – ‘Now, death has come. What does it mean? What is it that is dying? This body dies.’ I at once dramatized the scene of death. I extended my limbs and held them rigid. I imitated a corpse to lend an air of reality. I held my breath and kept my mouth closed, pressing the lips tightly together. -

Sapkal Department of Zoology. Shri Shivaji College of Arts, Commerce and Science. Akola. 444001. ABSTRACT The chromosomal study has been carried out in 5 commonly Hesperiidae, butterflies from Akola district, in Western Vidarbha Region of Maharashtra. The aim of the study was to determine the variation in chromosome number in these butterflies. Testicular meiosis examined in all species demonstrated variation in haploid chromosome number. 4 genera, 5 species of family Hesperiidae showed a range of n = 24 – 32. In the present study chromosome numbers are less than n = 29 – 31 and nearer or slightly more than 31 chromosomes. It is suggested that as in other several species of butterflies from different part of the world, the chromosome number in butterflies of Family Hesperiidae in Akola district of Maharashtra might have evolved due to chromosomal aberrations. However, conventional staining analysis has not revealed its origin and these data remain open to future research. Key words : Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae, chromosome, fusions, fissions. HAGEN1 1 Department of Environmental Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA 2 Department of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, London, UK One prominent concern about genetically modified crops is the possibility of environmental impacts from the movement of fitness-enhancing traits to wild plant populations. Decisions to deregulate Bt crops in the USA have relied strongly on arguments that these crops will not interbreed with wild relatives in the permitted growing regions. Limited attention therefore has been directed to analyses of the consequences of gene flow. To provide a transparent evaluation process for risks associated with insecticidal transgene escape, we crafted a series of questions designed to guide this aspect of the risk assessment. We then explored the current knowledge base available for answering such risk-related questions for three Bt crops (cotton, rapeseed, and rice). First, we generated a list of wild relatives of these crops. A definitive list of potential transgene recipients is not yet possible for some crops. Sufficient data are not available for some crops to eliminate certain related plant species from consideration of fertile hybrid formation, thus making lists for these crops subject to speculation. Second, we queried the HOSTS database (UK) to obtain a worldwide listing of lepidopteran species that feed on these crops and their wild relatives, and to determine the host range of the larvae. -
