While HSR has gained substantial market share in China over the past decade, LCCs have achieved only limited market penetration. The potential growth of LCCs in China, however, is promising given the growing travel demand and government policy support. As LCCs expand their service in the domestic market, they are likely to become a strong competitor of HSR. The potential competition between LCCs and HSR justifies the research of passengers’ behavioral intentions to use HSR and LCCs in China. This research focused on factors that influenced passengers’ intentions to use HSR and LCCs in China. Based on the extensive literature review, this study adopted the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as the ground theory and developed the expanded TPB models for HSR and LCCs. In addition to the original TPB components, trust, total travel time, price, service quality, access, and frequency were added to the HSR model. For LCCs, the TPB model was extended with the inclusion of price, service quality, uncertainty avoidance, access, frequency, and technology self-efficacy. This research used a survey method to collect data from LCC passengers in Shanghai and Shijiazhuang and from HSR passengers in Beijing and Shanghai. The total iv sample size was 484 for HSR and 596 for LCCs. This study used the structural equation modeling (SEM) method for data analysis. The results indicated that attitudes, subjective norms, price, access, service quality and total travel time were significant determinants of passengers’ intentions to use HSR; while frequency, trust and perceived behavioral control (PBC) were not important factors. Service quality had the strongest impact on passengers’ intentions to use HSR, followed by total travel time. For LCC passengers, attitudes, subjective norms, price, access, technology self-efficacy, service quality, and uncertainty avoidance significantly affected their motivation in using LCCs, while PBC and frequency were found insignificant. Price was the most important factor in passengers’ intentions to use LCCs, followed by service quality. The findings greatly enhance the understanding of passenger motivation in traveling by HSR and LCCs in China. The model comparison yields valuable insights into potential competition between HSR and LCCs in China. Both HSR and LCC passengers were significantly influenced by attitudes, subjective norms, price, access, and service quality in their decisions to use HSR and LCCs. Jing-Jin-Ji Region, People’s Republic of China Michael Lindfield, Xueyao Duan and Aijun Qiu 6.1 INTRODUCTION The Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Region, known as the Jing-Jin-Ji Region (JJJR), is one of the most important political, economic and cultural areas in China. The Chinese government has recognized the need for improved management and development of the region and has made it a priority to integrate all the cities in the Bohai Bay rim and foster its economic development. This economy is China’s third economic growth engine, alongside the Pearl River and Yangtze River Deltas. Jing-Jin-Ji was the heart of the old industrial centres of China and has traditionally been involved in heavy industries and manufacturing. Over recent years, the region has developed significant clusters of newer industries in the automotive, electronics, petrochemical, software and aircraft sectors. Tourism is a major industry for Beijing. However, the region is experiencing many growth management problems, undermining its competitiveness, management, and sustainable development. It has not benefited as much from the more integrated approaches to development that were used in the older-established Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta regions, where the results of the reforms that have taken place in China since Deng Xiaoping have been nothing less than extraordinary. The Jing-Jin-Ji Region covers the municipalities of Beijing and Tianjin and Hebei province (including 11 prefecture cities in Hebei). Beijing and Tianjin are integrated geographically with Hebei province. In 2012, the total population of the Jing-Jin-Ji Region was 107.7 million.

The new HSR construction was expected to become a new engine of local economic growth. However, there was a controversy regarding whether the connection between regions intensifies the concentration of socio-economic activities in the metropolis (straw effect) or contributes to the balance of regional development (sprawl effect). More increasing attention had been devoted to studying the “straw effects” caused by the newly built HSR networks on interregional social-economic activities. Despite considerable research on the benefit achieved from HSR construction, little has focused on the negative externalities resulting from it. This paper examined the potential “straw effects” of two new HSR lines through constructing the indicator of interregional dependency that measured one city’s level of dependency on another one. In order to exclude the interference of lurking variables, five metropolitan cities were selected as case studies. The empirical results, based on a panel data model, revealed that the larger the economic scale of the target city, the lower the level of dependency on other cities, and there existed a “straw effect” on HSR development in terms of Seoul.

The Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau (GHKM) region located in South China has undergone rapid economic development and urbanization over the past three decades (1986–2017). Therefore, this study investigates the changes in LULC of GHKM based on multi-year Landsat and nighttime light (NTL) data. First, a supervised classification technique, i.e., support vector machine (SVM), is used to classify the Landsat images into seven thematic classes: forest, grassland, water, fishponds, built-up, bareland, and farmland. Second, the demographic activities are studied by calculating the light index, using nighttime light data. Third, several socioeconomic factors, derived from statistical yearbooks, are used to determine the impact on the LULCC in the study area. The post-classification change detection shows that the increase in the urban area, from 0.76% (1488.35 km2) in 1986 to 10.31% (20,643.28 km2) in 2017, caused GHKM to become the largest economic segment in South China. This unprecedented urbanization and industrialization resulted in a substantial reduction in both farmland (from 53.54% (105,123.93 km2) to 33.07% (64,932.19 km2)) and fishponds (from 1.25% (2463.35 km2) to 0.85% (1674.61 km2)) during 1986–2017.
