Rozenberg Chercheur-Associé au CNRS, Université de Strasbourg keywords abstract Spanish Inquisition, purity The history of forced conversions to Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula is complex and of blood, anti-Semitism; differentiated. The question of the purity of blood, because of its racial connotations, was brought racial laws of Nazi Germany closer to the anti-Semitic laws of Nazi Germany. Plus précisément, la question de la pureté du sang, du fait de ses connotations raciales, peut être rapprochée des lois antisémites de l’Allemagne nazie. Nous proposons à quelques éléments de réflexion sur un tel rapprochement. I Nous cherchons à analyser quelques points fondamentaux devant permettre de préciser la question controversée d’un rapprochement entre les statuts sur la pureté du sang, qui ont touchés les Juifs espagnols du 15e siècle, et la question de l’antisémitisme racial allemand, de la fin du 19e siècle jusqu’à la fin de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Or, les conditions religieuses, culturelles, sociales et économiques propres à chacune de ces deux époques, elles-mêmes distantes de cinq siècles, sont profondément différentes, et donc difficilement comparables. Cependant, ce qui les rapproche concerne, d’une part les mêmes victimes de ces différentes mesures, les Juifs, et d’autre part l’échec commun concernant deux formes différenciées de tentative d’assimilation de leur altérité religieuse. Les historiens se sont opposés sur la question de la pertinence d’une comparaison entre les décrets de la limpieza de sangre et les mesures raciales nazies. Cet article cherche à préciser quelques points de réflexion concernant une telle comparaison, sans chercher toutefois à trancher cette question de façon définitive. Près de la moitié de la population juive de Castille et d’Aragon a alors subi le Baptême, après que les quartiers juifs aient été assiégés en exigeant: «la conversion ou la mort pour les Juifs» 1. Si le décret de l’Alhambra, de 1492, n’a concerné que les Juifs d’Espagne, celui de Manuel I, de 1496, ordonnait l’expulsion des Juifs et des Musulmans du Portugal. Les mesures, prises initialement contre les Juifs, ont été ensuite appliquées aux Musulmans 3. Précisons que les Mudéjars étaient les Musulmans qui vivaient sous l’autorité des rois chrétiens pendant la Reconquista de l’Espagne, achevée en le 2 janvier 1492, avec la prise de Grenade, par contre, les Morisques ou Moriscos, étaient des Musulmans convertis au Christianisme, notamment en Castille entre 1499 et 1502, puis en Aragon de 1521 à 1526 4. L’Inquisition espagnole, promulguée le 1er novembre 1478, par la bulle du Pape Sixte IV, s’étendait à toute l’Espagne catholique 5. Elle était placée sous l’autorité de Tomás de Torquemada 6, et touchait pareillement aux deux communautés des Nouveaux Chrétiens. Concernant plus spécialement les Juifs, des techniques sophistiquées étaient alors utilisées pour les convertir, notamment au moyen de campagnes incessantes organisées par des Juifs apostats, formés à la fois au Judaïsme et au Christianisme. Ils mettaient largement en œuvre des moyens de prédication de masses, propageant des histoires édifiantes sur le Christianisme, en soulignant les actes criminels que les Juifs auraient commis, laissant courir de nombreuses rumeurs à leur sujet.

    Comics and Science Fiction in West Bengal

    DANIELA CAPPELLO | 1 Comics and Science Fiction in West Bengal Daniela Cappello Abstract: In this paper I look at four examples of Bengali SF (science fiction) comics by two great authors and illustrators of sequential art: Mayukh Chaudhuri (Yātrī, Smārak) and Narayan Debnath (Ḍrāgoner thābā, Ajānā deśe). Departing from a con- ventional understanding of SF as a fixed genre, I aim at showing that the SF comic is a ‘mode’ rather than a ‘genre’, building on a very fluid notion of boundaries between narrative styles, themes, and tropes formally associated with fixed genres. In these Bengali comics, it is especially the visual space of the comic that allows for blending and ‘contamination’ with other typical features drawn from adventure and detective fiction. Moreover, a dominant thematic thread that cross-cuts the narratives here examined are the tropes of the ‘other’ and the ‘unknown’, which are in fact central images of both adventure and SF: the exploration and encounter with ‘unknown’ (ajānā) worlds and ‘strange’ species (adbhut jāti) is mirrored in the usage of a lan- guage that expresses ‘otherness’ and strangeness. These examples show that the medium of the comic framing the SF story adds further possibilities of reading ‘genre hybridity’ as constitutive of the genre of SF as such. WHAT’S IN A COMIC? Before addressing SF comics in West Bengal, I will first look at some interna- tional definitions of comic to outline the main problematics that have been raised in the literature on this subject. In one of the first books introducing the world of comics to artists and academics, Will Eisner looks at the me- chanics of ‘sequential art’ (a term coined by Eisner himself) describing it as a dual ‘form of reading’ (Eisner 1985: 8): The format of the comic book presents a montage of both word and image, and the reader is thus required to exercise both visual and verbal interpretive skills.

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract In this article I will show that the victimary theory of René Girard can make a decisive contribu- tion to the interpretation and solution of etymological and semantic questions of the verb “mac- tare”, which is basic in the terminology related to the topic of the sacrifice. The victimary anthro- pology provides the hermeneutical key that allows us to consider the expressions “mactare Deum” and “mactare victimam” as genetically synonymous. The theory of René Girard seems to perfectly explain the coexistence, in “mactare victimam”, of two meanings: kill on the one hand, raise and glorify on the other hand. In the case of original lynching, which is mostly hidden in the myth, the victim, which at first is killed for it is believed that the cause of all evils is deified by the persecu- tors as the cause of all goods. Hence the need to strengthen and renew periodically, through ani- mals or human sacrifices, the saving power of divinity established with the murder of the first vic- tim.

    CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS SCMS 1959-2019 SCMSCONFERENCE 2019PROGRAM Sheraton Grand Seattle MARCH 13–17 Letter from the President Dear 2019 Conference Attendees, This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. Formed in 1959, the first national meeting of what was then called the Society of Cinematologists was held at the New York University Faculty Club in April 1960. The two-day national meeting consisted of a business meeting where they discussed their hope to have a journal; a panel on sources, with a discussion of “off-beat films” and the problem of renters returning mutilated copies of Battleship Potemkin; and a luncheon, including Erwin Panofsky, Parker Tyler, Dwight MacDonald and Siegfried Kracauer among the 29 people present. What a start! The Society has grown tremendously since that first meeting. We changed our name to the Society for Cinema Studies in 1969, and then added Media to become SCMS in 2002. From 29 people at the first meeting, we now have approximately 3000 members in 38 nations. The conference has 423 panels, roundtables and workshops and 23 seminars across five-days. In 1960, total expenses for the society were listed as $71.32. Now, they are over $800,000 annually. And our journal, first established in 1961, then renamed Cinema Journal in 1966, was renamed again in October 2018 to become JCMS: The Journal of Cinema and Media Studies. This conference shows the range and breadth of what is now considered “cinematology,” with panels and awards on diverse topics that encompass game studies, podcasts, animation, reality TV, sports media, contemporary film, and early cinema; and approaches that include affect studies, eco-criticism, archival research, critical race studies, and queer theory, among others.
