Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

He was also an author of Bangla science fiction and thrillers. <b>Life</b> He was born in Varanasi, India, though his ancestors lived at Rajpur, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. His father was an employee of the Indian Railways and because of that; he had the opportunity of travelling to many places in India. He spent his childhood in Uttar Pradesh and his later life in Kolkata & Dhaka. He was a student of South Suburban School (Main) and later at the Scottish Church College in Kolkata. During his initial years, he (unsuccessfully) aspired to be a physician and studied the natural sciences. Later he started out as a school teacher. He even tried to make a career for himself as a businessman, but he was unsuccessful in that venture as well. At a time, he was working in the marketing division of a medicine producing company. After trying out the other occupations, in which he met marginal or moderate success, he rediscovered his talents for creativity in writing and eventually became a Bengali author and poet. Married to Beena Mitra, he was, by profession, a Bengali professor at City College in north Kolkata. I hope that “Monsters Eat Critics” sounds like the title of a Z-grade science-fiction movie, because I plan to write about genre comics, including science-fiction comics, rather than the alt-, art- and mini-comics so ably covered by other TCJ critics. Let me make clear, though, that I’ll be saying little about contemporary superhero comics, because I’m bored by the ones I’ve read and have nothing to express about them beyond a shrug and an annoyance that hype like “The New 52” gets so much attention, even negative attention, on comics blogs. Even though future columns will discuss creators who simultaneously labored in and transcended the superhero genre—we’ll trot Kirby out for obligatory analysis, if only to rile Pat Ford—I don’t care about superheroes or the superhero-driven business of American mainstream comics. I’m looking for art in other genres, and I’ll begin with one of the most artistically accomplished genre comics of the last ten years, Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto (2003-2009). Specifically, my argument is that Urasawa builds Pluto on overlapping, complex systems of doubling, and in reading closely to uncover these systems, I’ll be giving away all of Pluto’s major plot points, so beware. ISSN: 2342-2009 Fafnir vol 3, iss 4, pages 5–6 Fafnir – Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research journal.finfar.org Editorial 4/2016 Aino-Kaisa Koistinen, Katja Kontturi & Jyrki Korpua Fafnir’s issue 4/2016 is all about comics and animations, inspired by The Arctic Comics Festival held in Oulu, Finland (November 3–6, 2016). For this issue, we also have a guest editor, Dr. Katja Kontturi – also known as “The Ducktor” – who defended her PhD dissertation on fantasy and postmodernism in Don Rosa’s Disney comics in 2014. In his book Science Fiction Comics: The Illustrated History, Mike Benton makes a bold claim that “science fiction was ultimately responsible for the future and success of the entire comic book industry” (Benton 4). Though he speaks from the perspective of American comic industry, it is hard to deny the authenticity of his claim. It was, indeed, superheroes of the 1930s such as Superman (1938) and Batman (1939) – characters that can surely be considered science-fictional, or at least speculative – who started what we now call the “golden era” of comic books that lasted until the late 1950s in the United States. Comics and science fiction, as well as fantasy, have therefore always walked hand in hand. Together they have experimented on the possibilities of human imagination; and not just through narratives but also by their visual imagery. That’s why it is important to examine speculative fiction through the lense of comics and animation studies. Translator'sl?rcfacc This project, which began with the desire to render into English a rather long tale by Bimal Kar about five years ago, eventually grew into a considerably more extended compilation of Bengali short stories by ten of the most well known practitioners of that art since the heyday of Rabindranath Tagore. The collection is limited in many ways, not the least of which being that no woman writer has been included, and that it contains only a baker's dozen stories (if we count Bonophool's micro-stories collectively as one )-a number pitifully small considering the vast and prolific field of authors and stories a translator has at his or her disposal. -

The article investigates how these authors use architectural tropes to create speculative fictions that develop renditions of cities as complex narrative environments, and “places” with a distinctive role and profile in stories. It is argued that these authors exploit the multimodal nature of comics and the potential of architecture to construct complex worlds and narrative structures. Keywords: architectural tropes, comics, narrative structure, speculative fiction, world-building, multimodality Biography and contact info: Francesco-Alessio Ursini is currently a lecturer in English linguistics and literature at Jönköping University. His works on comics include a special issue on Grant Morrison for the journal ImageTexT, and the forthcoming Visions of the Future in Comics (McFarland Press), both co-edited with Frank Bramlett and Adnan Mahmutović. Speculative fiction and comics have always been tightly connected across different cultural traditions. It has been argued that the “golden era” of manga (Japanese comics) in the 70’s and 80’s is based on the preponderance of works using science/speculative fiction settings (e.g. Akira, Ohsawa 9–26). Similarly, classic works in the “Latin” comic traditions (i.e. Latin American historietas, Italian fumetti, and French/Belgian bande desineés) have long represented an ideal nexus between the speculative fiction genre and the Comics medium, one example being El Eternauta (Page 46–50). -

AGANTUK – The Humanism of Satyajit Ray, His Last Will And Testament Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri It’s impossible to record the transition in the socio-political and cultural landscape of India in general and Bengal in particular without taking into account the contribution of Satyajit Ray. As author Peter Rainer says, ‘In Ray’s films the old and the new are inextricably joined. This is the great theme of all his movies: the way the past in India forever bleeds through the present.’ Today, Indian cinema, particularly Bollywood, has found a global market. But it may be useful to remember that if anyone can be credited with putting Indian cinema on the world map, it is Satyajit Ray. His contribution to the cultural scene in India is limited not just to his work as a director. He was the Renaissance man of independent India. As a film-maker he handled almost all the departments on his own – he wrote the screenplay and dialogues for his film, he composed his own music, designed the promotional material for his films, designed his own posters, went on to handle the cinematography and editing, was actively involved in the costumes (literally sketching each and every costume in a film). -

Majumdar was an influential maker of cul- tural history. While her natal Ray/Raychaudhuri family comprised master entertain- ers who simultaneously brought reformist, innovative values into the public sphere of the arts, the leading woman writer from this milieu, in her autobiographical and memoir-based volumes Ār konakhāne (‘Somewhere Else’, [1967] 1989), Pākdaṇḍī (‘Winding, Hilly Road’, [1986] 2001), and Kheror khātā (‘Miscellany’ or ‘Scrapbook’, [1982] 2009), imaginatively created utopias. These ‘otherwheres’, to use a word that captures utopian connotations that she creates in her writing, give voice to the mar- ginal and the liminal. We find in her autobiographical writing the dual urge of longing for a utopian elsewhere, and a dissatisfaction with all the places one finds temporary mooring in. Title: Rabindranath Tagore’s Engagement with Science Name of scholar: Madhumita Roy Supervisor: Professor Amrit Sen Registration No. VB-798 of 2008-09 Date of registration: 10.09.2016 The Bengal Renaissance ushered in the cult of rationality, scientific education and temperament, thereby, resulting in an appropriation of the Western science by the indigenous elite in the colonial India. Intellectuals like Rammohun Roy, Akshay Kumar Dutta, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and others responded in their own way to the emerging discourses of science and modernity in Bengal. Rabindranath was not indifferent to such discourses and assumed a significant role in moulding the discourse of science and rationality in terms of a poet/philosopher’s perception. This thesis intends to explore the multiplicities embedded in the poet’s response towards science in his miscellaneous creations. Rabindranath’s perception of science differs from that of a nationalist or a scientist. In The Religion of Man, the poet clearly asserts his position: “my religion is a poet’s religion” (87). Probably, it is for this reason that he voices the impossibility of the co-existence of science and poetry. Written in 1914, his essay “Aamar Jagat” dramatises the conflict between a poet and a scientist. In fact, the seeds of the later Tagore-Einstein debate are strewn here. The Upanishadic philosophy, which he inherited from his father, undergoes a subsequent transformation in the poet’s thoughts. Rabindranath never chooses to reject the world as “maya”. Rather, his mind operates in eradicating the demarcation between the living and the non-living, the finite and the infinite, the individual and the universe.
