SHERK THE EPONYMOUS OFFICIALS OF GREEK CITIES: I aus: Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik 83 (1990) 249–288 © Dr. Rudolf Habelt GmbH, Bonn 249 The Eponymous Officials of Greek Cities: I (A) Introduction The eponymous official or magistrate after whom the year was named in Greek cities or as- sociations is well known to all epigraphists under various titles: archon, prytanis, stephanepho- ros, priest, etc. Some details about them have appeared in many articles and in scattered pas- sages of scholarly books. However, not since the publication of Clemens Gnaedinger, De Graecorum magistratibus eponymis quaestiones epigraphicae selectae (Diss. Strassburg 1892) has there been a treatment of the subject as a whole, although the growth of the material in this regard has been enormous.1 What is missing, however, is an attempt to bring the material up to date in a comprehensive survey covering the whole Greek world, at least as far as possible. The present article, of which this is only the first part, will present that material in a geographically organized manner: mainland Greece and the adjacent islands, then the Aegean islands, Asia Minor and Thrace, Syria, Egypt, Cyrene, Sicily, and southern Italy. All the epi- graphic remains of that area have been examined and catalogued. General observations and conclusions will be presented after the evidence as a whole has been given. I. Earliest Examples of Eponymity The earliest form of writing appeared in Sumer and Assyria sometime within the last half of the fourth millennium BC, and from there it spread westward. Thus, it is not at all surpris- ing that the Mesopotamian civilizations also made the earliest use of assigning names or events to years in dating historical records.

However, the same structure has different names, usually derived from proper names (or Eponyms), which is still reflected in conceptual errors that complicate the Teaching and Learning of Anatomy in Multidisciplinary, Transdisciplinarity and Metadisciplinarity approaches. Within the current importance of the generalist, critical and humanistic background of the professional, the multiplicity of names of scientists and researchers attributed to anatomical structures has created real difficulties during the preparation, writing and reading of scientific papers, including the communication between Researchers and Professors. Objective: The aim of this study was to critically analyze the use of eponyms in Health Sciences, as well as compiling the eleven mains terms in which the same eponym has been used to identify at least two different structures. Results: Eponyms are not representatives of the first anatomists to describe structures or indicate some topographic, morphological or functional aspects associated with parts of the Human Body, and so must be replaced with a location, descriptive or etiological terminology that facilitates the structural understanding. Conclusion: Because of its clinical importance, eponyms will not completely disappear, but due to discrepancies and secondary confusions to its use, there have been many suggestions and impositions of anatomical societies to minimize their use.

ROBB-SMITH, MD, FRCP The first part of this history gave an account of the Nomenclature itself and the now to K steps that led up to its publication in February 1869; it is necessary consider how it was received by the medical profession and the changes that took place during its subsequent revisions. v The British Medical Journal and Lancet had given detailed and favourable accounts of the Nomenclature in 1868 on the basis of the proof copies, describ- ing it as a work of almost national importance, so that when it was distributed - to the professions the notices were laudatory but comparatively brief, a few errors and omissions were pointed out and regrets that there were not more definitions. The reception in Scotland was very different. A special meeting of the Council of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh was held on ? 15 March 1869, when Dr Duncan suggested that as the Treasury's decision to distribute copies of the Nomenclature rendered it official, he considered that the London College should from courtesy have communicated with the other -1 Colleges of Physicians, and he was far from satisfied that the Nomenclature was acceptable. A committee was appointed to examine the book and report to the Council, while the President undertook to write to the Member of Parliament requesting him to ask a question in the House of Commons. The answer by the Chancellor explained the importance of a uniform nomen- clature and continued: 'The Government do not adopt or recognise this work the sense of making themselves responsible for the correctness of its >? contents, but they do so far adopt and recognise it, in that it is their wish .

ABDERA in Thrace With the westward advance of Persia under Cyrus the Great and the fall of Sardis (probably 541 BC) the Greek cities of Asia Minor received a new master whose satraps adopted policies hostile to their best interests. Rebelling against the hybris of the Persians, the inhabitants of Teos on the mainland left their city and migrated to Abdera on the southern coast of Thrace (Strabo 14.1.30 and Herodotus 1.168). Many of them later returned to Teos, and the relationship between Teos and Abdera remained so close that even about 166 BC Teos sent an embassy to Rome to intercede for Abdera against the encroachment of the Thracian King Kotys. CHALCIDIC PENINSULA Geographically separated from the Greek states to the south by the kingdom of Macedo- nia, this peninsula was a very early area of colonization by Chalcis, Corinth, Eretria, and An- dros. With such an origin and because of the opportunities afforded for communication and trade with the north its historical role before the time of Philip II was played out in the context of Athenian and Spartan events. Its vulnerable position and the consequent need for unity caused its cities to form a Chalcidic Confederacy at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War. Olynthus became its capital. Unlike most Greek federal states, the Chalcidians were a group of cities that united into a kind of tribal state, rather than the reverse, and then formed a federal state. After an expansion of the Confederacy into Macedonia early in the fourth century it found itself confronted by Sparta in 382 BC. Sparta besieged the city of Olynthus and the Confederacy was disbanded. With the collapse of Spartan power, however, the Confederacy was reformed. Then, in 348 BC, Olynthus fell to Philip II. All semblance of the Confeder- acy disappeared and its cities lost their freedom. Little is known about the Confederacy's type of government, but it is reasonable to conclude that there was a federal boule.

    Sulla and the Pirates Susan I. Rotroff Enormous strides have been made in the dating of Hellenistic pottery in re- cent years, but serious problems remain. One of these is in the chronology of the very end of the period, the 1st-century transition from a Hellenistic to a Roman ceramic template. Various factors contribute to the intransigence of the problem: the small number of fixed points, the scholarly division of the period between specialists in Greek and Roman ceramics, and the nature of the pottery itself. Relatively low production standards for many manufac- turing centers, combined with the use of moulds, make it difficult – perhaps impossible – to track ceramic development in stages less than a generation in duration. This paper attempts to wrest some landmarks for ceramic develop- ment through examination of pottery associated with fixed points of the first third of the century, and at the same time implicitly explores the question of whether or not one can, in fact, distinguish between late Hellenistic ceramics in increments as small as 20 years. Both Athens and Delos preserve deposits that can be related to dated events of the 1st century. On Delos, debris from the abandonment or destruction of houses and other structures is probably the result of one of two attacks, that of Mithridates’ general Archelaus in 88, or that of the pirate Athenodoros in 69 BC. At Athens, one group of cistern and well fills can be associated with the destruction by Sulla in 86, another with post-Sullan cleanup that took place some decades after the sack.
