Dealing with Remnants of Politics, Power and History in Germany Dr.-Ing. Ulrike Altenmüller-Lewis, AIA Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA ABSTRACT: The link between place and identity is not stagnant or fixed. It changes over time, influenced by social and political changes and ethical developments, from one generation to another. What was important to remember (or commemorate) yesterday may not have the same significance tomorrow. What we see as right and just now may be viewed as wrong or obsolete in a decade or two. So, what do we do when the storyline changes? In our current political climate, the question about the validity of certain historic monuments, their context, their meaning for various groups and our handling of these at times uncomfortable monuments gained unexpected relevance. Suddenly the question becomes important what to do with these memories, with monuments and buildings that clearly reference a certain time or nationalistic expression and that today leave us with an uncomfortable aftertaste. This abbreviated version of the paper explores the questions posed above by looking at Germany as one example of where the people had to grapple with the role and impact of collective memory, of public monuments and architecture that are freighted with heavy past. German history since 1871 is filled with fractures of political, cultural and social orders that forced the definition and re-definition of what to remember and how to remember appropriately by its politicians and citizens. The paper will retrace the changes in significance and how authorities and the public dealt with buildings of historic significance in two locations of Berlin as examples from a larger range of buildings and monuments the author is investigating in context of the topic.

  • 07-Palast Der Republik Ok
Berlin, End of the 20th century 4 4 8 8 > VERB The transformation of this site on Berlin’s Island of Museums stands out for its central position in the urban fabric and its significance as a representation of state power. The Palace of the Republic, built in the 1970’s on the foundations of the Pal- ace of the Prussian Emperor and the medieval city walls, survives today next to the Berlin Cathedral and the reconstructed Lustgarten as an empty relic of the GDR. Although the reunified German parliament voted for the demolition of this symbol of the socialist regime and the reconstruction of the Prussian Palace, the current uncertaintly created caused by lack of funding has become fertile ground for new proposals in the definition of public space. 84 86 Foyer The demolition of the Prussian Castle (Stadtschloss) gave place to the vast Marx-Engels- Platz, conceived simultaneously as the culmination point of all popular and military parades and as the forecourt of a new government tower to be constructed on the opposite bank of the Spree river. Twenty years later, the administrative center was redefined into a new civic center that combined the most representative institution of the republic, the Volkskammer (People’s Chamber), with a wide range of venues for popular events, including auditoriums, restaurants, a bowling alley, and a discotheque. For a thorough documentation on the building and the Stadtschloss site, see Thomas Beutelschmidt, Julia Novak, ed., Ein Palast und seine Republik, Berlin: Verlag Bauwesen Huss-Medien, 2001. 6 8 PALACE OF THE REPUBLIC, BERLIN.

  • Representation and the Recurring Past in Post-Unification Berlin
CONJURED SPACES: REPRESENTATION AND THE RECURRING PAST IN POST-UNIFICATION BERLIN by KIMBERLY JEAN PHILLIPS B.A. (Hons.), The University of Victoria, 1997 M. A., The University of British Columbia, 2000 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Fine Arts) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA September 2007 © Kimberly Jean Phillips, 2007 11 ABSTRACT Behind the mask of new architecture rapidly transforming Berlin's visage in the years following Germany's reunification in 1990 lie profound anxieties over the nature and implications of the city's reconstruction in the face of an irresolvable past and an unclear future. A disenchanted and destabilized eastern population, resurfacing questions over the definition of "Germanness" and the German nation, and the sudden collision of two very different official narratives of the National Socialist and communist pasts frustrate the city's desire to present a unified identity in the first years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. To access this difficult terrain, my dissertation departs markedly from the focus of much of the published literature on the post-unification city and looks not to Berlin's new building projects themselves but rather to the more unstable spaces between architecture: those more marginal or unresolved sites and surfaces which, in states of flux, paralysis, or neglect, are more vulnerable to (and revealing of) the possibilities of appropriation and disturbance. This study considers three temporary, site-specific installations that for brief moments haunted such sites in Berlin during the first volatile years after 1990: Shimon Attie's 1991-1992 photographic projections entitled The Writing on the Wall, the 1993 simulation in canvas of Berlin's demolished Stadtschloss, and Christo and Jeanne- Claude's famed wrapping of the Reichstag in 1995.

REBUILDING A NEW EUROPEAN CAPITAL: AN EXAMINATION OF THE EFFECTS OF BERLIN’S PLANWERK INNENSTADT ON INNER CITY DEVELOPMENT By ALEXANDRA CRISTINA MONTEALEGRE A THESIS PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2008 1 © 2008 Alexandra Cristina Montealegre 2 To Mimi and the Palast. 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS There are numerous people I owe a debt of gratitude, as this project has been in the works for over four years. I would like to give a special thanks to Dr. David Griffiths, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who advised me to pick up Ghosts of Berlin, thus beginning this journey. Dr. Karin Crawford, formerly at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, initially exposed me to German critical theory and aesthetics, arming me with the theoretical toolbox necessary for this research. Thanks go to the planning officials and others who agreed to be interviewed for this paper. I also extend my gratitude to Regina Poly, Hans Brenner, and Ulrich Giersch for granting their permission to include their maps and drawings in my report. The financial assistance provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the University of Florida’s Center for European Studies, and the College of Design, Construction, and Planning enabled me to travel to gather research in Berlin. I also wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Chris Silver, and cochair, Dr. Richard Schneider, for their patience in reviewing my drafts.
