AAEP News Bulletin: Spur of the Moment View this email in your browser August 17, 2015 Issue 420 AAEP NEWS Federal legislation eliminating horse soring receives continued support of AAEP A federal bill which will protect Tennessee walking horses, racking horses, and Spotted Saddle horses from soring was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 3268, and its companion bill in the Senate, S. 1121, are endorsed by the AAEP and a broad coalition of major horse industry, veterinary and animal protection groups. Read more. EquiManagement Joins AAEP Media Partner Program The AAEP has announced the addition of EquiManagement, an Active Interest Media (AIM) Equine Network publication, as a Media Partner. The Media Partnership program consists of three equine healthcare media outlets dedicated to providing resources and education through the AAEP to equine veterinarians and horse owners to improve the health and welfare of the horse. When given as part of premedication, buprenorphine provides superior analgesia compared to butorphanol in horses undergoing general anaesthesia and elective surgery. The most appropriate dose of buprenorphine to maximise analgesic properties while minimising side-effects warrants further investigation. EQUINE DISEASE NEWS Hendra virus vaccine for horses approved A Hendra virus vaccine for horses was registered with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority earlier this month. Anthrax confirmed in equine in Texas The first Anthrax case in Texas for 2015 has been confirmed in a horse in Uvalde County. The premises is located approximately 25 miles northwest of Uvalde. The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has quarantined the premises. Learn more. EEE found in Montana Representatives of the City-County Cascade County Health Department reported two confirmed cases of equine encephalitis in the Great Falls area. More.
