Nos interrogamos sobre el esta- tuto actual de la imagen, las derivas de las tecnologías, los imaginarios políticos, las estructuras económicas, la productividad de la improvisa- ción, las experiencias sociales del tiempo, las subjetividades contempo- ráneas y el diseño colaborativo. Una primera aproximación a este planteo aparece ya en nuestro nombre. Recurrimos a la noción de futuridades para señalar un des- plazamiento desde la idea de futuro como horizonte que se enuncia en singular a una idea de tiempo abierto, no lineal, múltiple. Es esta perspectiva la que nos interesa para pensar el devenir, las tendencias, lo real en transformación. Creemos que el reconocimiento de ese pasaje -del futuro a las futuridades- abre la posibilidad de una nueva conste- lación conceptual, buscando dar cuenta de distintas maneras de inter- pelar, imaginar formas de relacionarnos y predisponernos respecto al porvenir. La apertura de los interrogantes que fuimos formulando incluye el abordaje de tópicos ligados habitualmente al pensamiento del futuro pero también el análisis de los modos en que formas organizativas, eco- nomías, artefactos y afectos inciden en nuestros vínculos con las futuri- dades. De allí que nuestra intencionalidad sea suscitar encuentros que expandan búsquedas, trayectos y proyectos, participando de las discu- siones, exploraciones, imaginaciones e intervenciones sobre los modos 9 STEPHEN DUNCOMBE en que la condición futura organiza nuestras vidas. Para eso apostamos al diálogo con otros colectivos, centros de investigación, espacios artís- ticos, organizaciones sociales y políticas con quienes investigar “visio- nes”, virtualidades y encarnaciones. El encuentro con lxs compañerxs de Tinta Limón, a quienes agradecemos la confianza y el trabajo edi- torial dedicado a este libro, es una feliz consecuencia de esas apuestas. ¿Por qué imaginar políticas en la era de la fantasía? Nos encontramos con Dream: Re-Imagining Progressive politics in an Age of Fantasy, de Stephen Duncombe, bastante de casualidad (o por pre- disposición algorítmica), en Internet, en febrero de 2016, pocos meses después del cambio de gobierno en la Argentina. Llegamos hasta ahí preguntándonos por la imaginación y las prácticas políticas en un con- texto global, regional y local signado por el crecimiento de formas eco- nómicas, políticas y discursivas con matrices neoliberales, articuladas a posiciones racistas, sexistas, meritocráticas y autoritarias. Una trama compleja y de larga genealogía, nutrida de imágenes, deseos y narracio- nes que nacen o pasan por el mercado, movilizan fuerzas y proyectos y, en su granularidad, pregnan lo social. Si hubo un tiempo en que las políticas de izquierdas estuvieron cerca de monopolizar la fantasía política mientras los conservadores defendían el statu quo apelando a “la realidad”, actualmente el capita- lismo cibernético y los sectores políticamente alineados al neolibera- lismo tienen la iniciativa sobre el futuro, proveyendo imágenes, relatos, aspiraciones y construyendo auténticas utopías de mercado. Soñar es -en términos individuales y colectivos- una fuerza productiva funda- mental para el capitalismo informacional. Con respecto al GIF, a mediados de 2016, estimulados por las dis- cusiones que la lectura del libro de Duncombe y otros libros afines generaron en nuestros encuentros grupales, decidimos comenzar a ex- plorar otro tipo de acciones. Fue entonces que la traducción de Dream. Re-Imagining Progressives Politics in an Age of Fantasy a La potencia de los sueños. Imaginando políticas en la era de la fantasía se volvió un proyecto colectivo que involucró a diez personas. La práctica de traducirlo suple- mentó las discusiones que veníamos sosteniendo en torno a sus ideas, 10 PRESENTACIÓN | GIF poniéndonos frente al desafío de traducir un ensayo crítico de las re- laciones entre cultura y política en los Estados Unidos y a las exigen- cias de conservar los matices y giros en los que destellan, se expresan y combinan su voluntad reflexiva y su incitación a multiplicar nuevas formas de activismo. Como ejemplo de ello valen las traducciones de las palabras dream y progressive, con toda la carga cultural que tienen en la política norteamericana, y las discusiones generadas sobre aspec- tos específicos de las experiencias político-culturales que Duncombe analiza a lo largo del libro. En ese mismo sentido, que busca prolongar los debates, decidimos complementar esta edición con una entrevista al autor (realizada a principios de 2017), profundizando algunos temas e interrogantes planteados en el libro y abriendo algunas líneas de re- flexión que procuran ampliar su alcance. Uno de los rasgos más valiosos de este libro radica en la potencia que Duncombe atribuye a los sueños y los deseos, en tanto fuerzas motrices para la creación de lo que hoy y acá es posible imaginar. Reflexionar, disputar y experimentar la potencia de los sueños y las fantasías, sus gramáticas, sus objetivos, sus aspiraciones, sus escenificaciones, es una vía posible para salir del indignismo claustrofóbico y de las repe- ticiones despotenciadoras de políticas pretendidamente progresistas y emancipatorias que, si no se olvidaron de soñar, imaginan siempre lo mismo y del mismo modo. Creemos que La potencia de los sueños aporta elementos teóricos, estratégicos y experienciales capaces de inspirar formas de articular demandas, protestas y nuevas institucionalidades que no rechacen ni destruyan la alteridad, sino que puedan convertir su fuerza en materia para transformaciones colectivas. El libro es, desde este punto de vista, un elogio del desvío creador. 11 ENTREVISTA CON STEPHEN DUNCOMBE por Grupo de Investigación en Futuridades EL CONTEXTO DE REALIZACIÓN DE DREAM –¿Cómo evaluás la producción de los estudios culturales a la hora de analizar la cultura de masas y mediática en Estados Unidos? ¿Qué impactos y qué capacidad de transformación han tenido? –Los estudios culturales, al menos como se desarrollaron en Estados Unidos, son básicamente estudios antropológicos, sociológicos o li- terarios que apuntan hacia un objeto diferente: la cultura popular o alternativa, en vez de una tribu, la sociedad o las “grandes obras” de ficción. A mediados de los noventa, esa fue una intervención audaz –y muy necesaria– en el campo académico, proveyendo un espacio y un lugar donde el estudio de la cultura de la vida cotidiana se convirtió en una iniciativa legítima. Actualmente, la mayoría de los departamentos de antropología, sociología y literatura han adoptado los estudios de la cultura popular y alternativa, por lo que no existe una gran necesidad de los estudios culturales como disciplina. Pero algo se ha perdido en el mainstream de estos estudios: la polí- tica. Los estudios culturales en los Estados Unidos estuvieron muy in- fluenciados por los trabajos de Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams y, muy especialmente, por Stuart Hall y el Centro de Estudios Culturales Contemporáneos de la Universidad de Birmingham, del Reino Unido. Todos estos investigadores eran marxistas, y todos ellos entendían a los estudios culturales como una forma de localizar la resistencia en la cultura; una resistencia que pudiera luego articularse políticamente 13 ENTREVISTA A STEPHEN DUNCOMBE y canalizarse a través de los movimientos sociales.
