Last week Tristan Foenander caught up with former Oakleigh Chargers player – now Sydney Swan - Alex Johnson, and his mum Joan, in their Mother’s Day special. TRISTAN: Joan, tell us what Alex was like as a kid TRISTAN: Alex, tell us about your days growing up, fi rstly growing up. Did you always expect him to pursue his your time with the Hawthorn Citizens, spending Sunday’s footballing dream? with your parents at the local footy. Football was and the local club was the Hawthorn Citizens and I didn’t always his fi rst love, I guess, so we thought maybe that’s start to attack it because I wanted to go down and play a what he wanted to do. When he was about 11, he said, few games at my brothers team. Which I don’t think mum ‘look, I really want to play AFL’. And we thought, well you was too happy about because I was pretty small when I know, that is a fantastic dream but at that point, you never was younger, but I played about four games there in a year imagine it is going to happen. And so, of course, inevitably and then I wanted to join my own team in the next year. it did, so it was an amazing story. We sort of missed registration and that type of thing and I showed up and they had me signed up and all that type of thing. I just sort of said ‘can I have a run’, and we convinced them to give me a go and then yeah, I went on and just played there, played my juniors there from about under 10s to under 15s and I had great times there and I played with guys like Pat Karnezis, who’s now at Brisbane, and Alex Browne at Essendon. So, it was a pretty good team down there; a lot of fun and I loved Sunday’s down there. TRISTAN: How much support did your parents give you from the time you were a little tacker and then playing TAC Cup footy and beyond.

S eed hurts.
