The growing number of females taking to the fi eld, and infl uence of women at community and professional football clubs, is without doubt one of the biggest positives I’ve seen during my time in the industry. For the past fi ve years, Youth Girls football has experienced the most signifi cant growth of any segment or demographic in our game. Pleasingly, we are now seeing that growth translate into more females playing Australian football at a senior level and assuming leadership roles at clubs and leagues across the state. This year we saw the Victorian Women’s Football League grow to 51 teams across seven divisions with the addition of 11 new sides in 2015. There is also growing supporter interest in female football, illustrated by the success of the AFL Women’s Exhibition Matches over the past two years. Just last week, 14 girls from the VWFL were selected in the third annual AFL Women’s Draft , joining eight players from the competition who were retained on the list of Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. The girls will take to the fi eld for the fi rst of two AFL Exhibition match this year on Sunday May 24 at the MCG. We are confi dent that the strength of the VWFL will continue grow thanks to the huge amount of work being done to provide young girls the opportunity to play in female only competitions. The huge growth in community football Youth Girls teams, combined with the six TAC Youth Girls Academies we now have in place in diff erent locations around the state, create a pathway that one day down the track could include a national competition. Strong growth has also occurred in the umpiring ranks with more and more girls seizing the opportunity to fulfi l one of the most important roles in football. To highlight the growing prominence of female umpires, the TAC Cup clash between the Oakleigh Chargers and North Ballarat Rebels on Saturday May 2 will be off iciated by an all-female umpiring team. Six girls currently on the AFL Victoria Umpire Panel, along with two girls who are involved in our boundary umpire rookie squads for 2015 will take charge in what looms as a landmark day for female umpiring.
