I’m going to start this week’s WAFL Collectables with a couple of old programs that I’ve never before featured in this column. Regular readers would know that the Football Budget was what sparked my interest in collecting WAFL memorabilia, way back in 1985. But the Budget has been around a lot longer than that, having first been sold at games in 1936. And its predecessor, WA Footballer, kicked off in 1921. Coincidentally, 1921 was the year in which Perth first hosted the national carnival, although only Victoria and South Australia saw fit to send teams across the Nullarbor. And the WA Footballer produced both a program for each game of the carnival and an program in 1914 – for a game against South overall carnival souvenir program. They’re all Fremantle.
