OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE WAFL $3.00 ROUND 1 JULY 18, 2020 like no other When the ball is bounced across various WAFL venues on Saturday, it will be exactly 124 days since football in this state was turned on its head by the Coronavirus pandemic. Players have had their longest ever preseasons, coaches have tried to plan for the unplannable and backroom staff were presented with challenges no-one could have seen coming. Finally, footy is back. It really will be a season like no other in 2020; nine-rounds, 16-minute quarters, no West Coast Eagles or AFL-listed players, a top-four and three weeks of finals. The Optus WAFL has never looked like it will on Saturday, July 18, but the elements of the game we love will still be apparent. We look forward to seeing Subiaco attempt the elusive three-peat. The midfield of Horsley, Kitchin and Delahunty is truly worth the price of admission. What will the big three inclusions of Chris u Lachlan Delahunty Masten, Brady Grey and Fraser McInnes 2019 Sandover Medallist do for Perth. It’s been 30 years but is the wait for finals footy nearly over? South Fremantle return with a chip on their shoulder and look hungrier than ever to atone for Grand Final day. The Tigers added to an already powerful list and look ready to take the next step. The Sharks and Peel are young and developing but youth often brings excitement and a sense of the unknown to the table. A talented West Perth have all the tools to make a difference this season and will entertain their supporters in 2020. What better match-up to open the WAFL season than a traditional Fremantle Derby. A game that encompasses everything we enjoy about WAFL footy. Fierce rivalry, a burning desire to win and plenty of flare between two of the competition’s oldest competitors. If anyone has a chance of challenging reigning premiers Subiaco, it’s Claremont. Leederville Oval will set the scene for a cracking first up fixture. Swans host West Perth at a hostile Steel Blue Oval and the new and improved Perth will visit Mandurah for a clash against Peel. All of this plus an abundance of talent in the second year of the Optus WAFL Women’s competition. Once again, some of the best players in the AFLW will suit up for their local club. u Chris Masten We will get a glimpse at All-Australians like Gemma 2020 Perth recruit Houghton, Ebony Antonio and Dana Hooker. The heroes of the next generation, right on our doorstep. The best part of it all is from game one in both competitions, you’re invited and everyone is welcome to the return of footy in WA. It’s a celebration 124 days in the making.
