OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE WAFL $3.00 EDITION 1 APRIL 2, 2021 INTRODUCING THE 2021 Optus WAFL Premiership Season They say a week is a long time in footy, but this past 12 months has felt nothing short of an eternity for football across the country. It’s been exactly 382 days since the WAFL was stopped in its tracks on the eve of the 2020 campaign by COVID-19, thus beginning the slogan of a ‘season like no other.’ The competition stopped then started but looked entirely different; 16-minute quarters, a nine-round season and a top four finals series. It was WAFL football, but not as we knew it. Fortunately, unlike most other State Leagues, the WAFL was able to complete a season, with the undoubted highlight taking place in the last game of the year. 10,000 fans packed Fremantle Community Bank Oval to witness a fitting Grand Final between South Fremantle and Claremont. The arm wrestle of a contest thrilled spectators and fans around the state, with the Bulldogs finishing three-point victors and deserved Premiers. We arrive at the beginning of the 2021 Optus WAFL Season with renewed optimism. The competition returns to 20 rounds. Quarters change back to 20 minutes plus time on. The five best teams will battle it out in the WAFL Finals Series. And the West Coast Eagles return to the u Keegan Knott competition. • Great News Regarding Two Local Footballers
GREAT NEWS REGARDING TWO LOCAL FOOTBALLERS (Ref: 2019/3) The month of November (2018) provided DFNC supporters with more good news to celebrate when it was announced that two former Dromana players footballers, Darren Minchington and Will Hamill, had been signed by AFL clubs as outlined below. DARREN MINCHINGTON BECOMES A HAWK Darren Michington, who had played his junior football and ten Senior XVIII Grade games with DFNC, made his senior debut for St Kilda in Round: 20 in season 2013, against Hawthorn at the Docklands Stadium. In that match, Darren was on the field for 77% of game-time and collected eight disposals and booted one goal. During the next five seasons, Darren went onto to play a total of twenty-eight Senior AFL games and kick 22 goals including a bag of three goals on three occasions. After being de-listed listed by St Kilda at the end of 2018, Darren was promptly ‘snapped up’ by Hawthorn FC ; and astute judges think that the Hawk’s decision, in throwing Darren a ‘lifeline’ to continue playing AFL football, is laudable. If ‘Lady Luck’ shares the journey with Darren, there is every chance that he will take his football to a new and exciting level. All supporters at Dromana are hoping Darren can consolidate his place in the Hawks line-up during 2019 and show the football world that he fully deserved another chance to play at the top tier of Australian football. The following summary regarding Darren Minchington was published in ‘The Age’ in November 2018…. “ Hawthorn has signed delisted Saint Darren Minchington in a bid to stock their forward line with speed ahead of 2019.The 24-year-old did not play a senior game in 2018 as he battled a series of injuries and the Saints delisted him at the end of the season after 28 games with the club.

E-Footy RECORD 31st May 2008 Issue 9 Editorial with Marty King AFL AND AFLPA SET TO MOVE ON NEW ALCOHOL POLICY It’s terrifi c to see the AFL and the AFL Players Association working collaboratively to formulate a new policy on responsible alcohol consumption in the football environment. They are seeking feedback from each of the 16 AFL clubs, together with key national drug and alcohol experts, before framing a policy with guidelines that all AFL clubs and associated bod- ies like AFL Queensland can use to develop their own. This comes after a lot of background work was done over almost two years and the AFL Com- mission received a full briefi ng. The AFL, the Players’ Association and the AFL clubs understand that quite clearly that they have a responsibility to promote responsible drinking within the AFL and among the 16 clubs, the players and staff. But it’s not just about the elite level. The same will apply at the grassroots level and we at AFLQ will look to partner with the League on this important initiative. The guidelines within the AFL Framing Policy will provide a framework for AFL clubs and asso- ciated bodies to assist them in developing their own individual club responsible alcohol policies. The AFL Framing Policy lists a set of objectives for players and club staff, including the devel- opment of approaches for responsible consumption, effective pathways for treatment of alco- hol-related problems, creating responsible drinking cultures and using player welfare oriented and education-based approaches to promote responsible alcohol consumption.

TAC Cup Round 2 2 & 3 April 2016 $3.00 Season 2016 kicking into gear Wasn’t it great to have football back last weekend, both at AFL and TAC Cup level? While the next crop of future AFL talent was taking to the field in TAC Cup games throughout Victoria last weekend, it was a highlight of the Easter weekend to see eight draft ees debut in Round 1 of the AFL season – including 2015 Morrish Medal winner Clayton Oliver who claimed the first NAB AFL Rising Star nomination of the season aft er his 22-disposal debut for Melbourne. While the TAC Cup season started last weekend for the best U18 male talent across Victoria, last Monday saw the conclusion of a very successful Youth Girls Academy Challenge for the most promising U18 females across the state. Congratulations to the Dandenong Stingrays, who defeated the Sandringham Dragons in the finale to the month-long tournament. It is pleasing to see TAC support not only the next crop of elite U18 boys but also what will be the next crop of future female AFL footballers via the U18 Youth Girl Academies across eight regions. During the week we celebrated the launch of the Peter Jackson VFL and new VFL Women’s competition. With the launch of a national AFL women’s competition in 2017, it is exciting for AFL Victoria to launch the first VFL Women’s season this weekend. Also at the launch we looked back at the history of the TAC Cup competition, with last week signalling the beginning of its 25th season.
