PART I HE inhabitants of Bunbury may well be proud T of their parish church, the dignity of its architecture and proportions striking the visitor at once on entering. They may also take pride in their local worthies of bygone days, for among Bunbury men there are some very memorable persons : Sir Hugh Calveley, a free-lance of the days of Edward III., who founded a college at Bunbury ; Sir Ralph Egerton, a distinguished soldier, made Standard-bearer of England by Henry VIII. ; Sir George Beeston, another sixteenth- century commander on land and sea; Thomas Aldersey, citizen of London, living in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, a generous benefactor to the parish, who founded Bunbury School ; and Sir John Williams, an eminent scholar, counsel, and judge of the last century : all made their mark in the world and are commemorated by monuments or inscriptions within the church. (It should be read in conjunction with the Original Officer’s Report and the update report dated 7 th February 2012.) Alternative sites The search for alternative sites for the proposed enabling development has been an on-going process since the previous Appeal was dismissed in 2005. The previous Inspector and English Heritage both made it clear that a site within the Historic Park and Garden would be unacceptable on the grounds of: • sustainability, • visual impact on the character and appearance of the open countryside • the effect on the setting of the Abbey and the integrity of its historic parkland. The Inspector therefore directed the applicants towards sites on the edge of existing settlements. Following the earlier planning application and appeal the owners of Combermere Abbey were invited by the then Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council to discuss how a more acceptable enabling scheme could be put together in order to save this important heritage asset.
