The Befana comes by night with her stockings all tattered and torn her hat worn the Roman way long life to the Befana! (A traditional carol about the Befana) If you are a child in Italy there is a holiday after Christmas that brings an equivalent dose of excitement: the Epiphany. Greek for "to manifest,” the Epiphany marks the first appearance of the birth of Christ to the Gentiles. According to Christianity, on January 6, the 12th day of Christmas, the three Wise Men [2] arrived at the manger bearing gifts for Baby Jesus. That day, which marks the end of the Holiday Season, is also the day of the Befana, a good witch that fills childrens’ stockings with sweets or coal. Here is where Catholic tradition and Italian folklore collide. According to tradition, the three Wise Page 1 of 3 The Feast of the Befana Published on iItaly.org (http://www.iitaly.org) Men, before arriving at the manger, stopped at a shack for directions. An old woman holding a broom opened the door, they invited her to come along, but she declined. Later that night, after having refused the invitation of a shepard as well, she saw a great light in the sky and decided to catch up with the three, bearing gifts for Baby Jesus as well.

  • Holidays Around the World Pack Cover Italy
HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD: ITALY Fun Traditions, Activities, and Much More! Christmas Traditions in Italy Christmas Celebrations One of the most important ways of celebrating Christmas in Italy is the Nativity crib scene. A lot of Italian families have a Nativity crib in their homes. The city of Naples in Italy is world-famous for its cribs and crib making. These are known as 'Presepe Napoletano' (meaning Neapolitan Cribs). Sometimes the Nativity scene is displayed in the shape of a pyramid which can be several feet tall! It's made of several tiers of shelves and is decorated with colored paper, gold-covered pinecones and small candles. A small star is often hung inside the top of the pyramid/triangle. The shelves above the manger scene might also contain fruit, candy, and presents. Epiphany is also important in Italy. On Epiphany night, children believe that an old lady called 'Befana' brings presents for them. Children put stockings up by the fireplace for Befana to fill. In parts of northern Italy, the Three Kings might bring you present rather than Befana. On Christmas day 'Babbo Natale' (Santa Claus) might bring them some small gifts, but the main day for present giving is on Epiphany. An old Italian custom is for children to go out carol singing and playing songs on shepherds pipes, wearing shepherds sandals and hats. Some families have a 'Ceppo' or Yule Log which is burnt through the Christmas season. Christmas Meal On Christmas Eve, it's common that no meat is eaten. Often a light seafood meal is eaten and then people go to the Midnight Mass service.

THE NEW JERSEY ITALIAN AND ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE COMMISSION The Story of La Befana The Italian Christmas Witch Grade Level: Kindergarten and First Grade Subjects: Social Studies / Language Arts (Folklore) Categories: Arts and Sciences / History and Society Standards Please see page 4 of the lesson plan for complete standards alignment. Objective: The students will be able to: 1. identify the traditions of an Italian Christmas. 2. will be able to compare and contrast the celebrations of the Italian Epiphany. and The Three Kings celebration of Puerto Rico. Abstract: State and national curriculum standards ask that students be exposed to the cultures and celebrations of other countries. Although, Christmas is a very important holiday in both Italy and Puerto Rico, both lands place a special emphasis of the Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated twelve days later. Students will investigate the Italian gift-giver, Befana and compare her to the American icon Santa Claus. They will compare the Italian celebration with the American Christmas celebration. This lesson help students better understand the Italian tradition, along with understanding the Puerto Rican tradition of sharing gifts during the Feast of the Three Kings. They will see that the tradition of sharing gifts at Christmas or at Epiphany originated with the story of the astrologers from the East traveling to find the baby Jesus in Judea. • Befana the Legend of Befana Began Thousands of Years Ago and Remains to This Day a Tradition Practised by Italian Children and Their Families
Befana The legend of Befana began thousands of years ago and remains to this day a tradition practised by Italian children and their families. As the story goes, one day, the three Magi left their country bearing special gifts of gold, incense and myrrh for the new-born Jesus Christ. They were guided by a star across many countries. At every village that they passed, people ran to meet them and accompany them in their journey. But there was one old woman who did not join the Magi. She claimed to be too busy with her housework and promised to join them later when she had time. The next day, she realized her mistake and frantically ran after the Magi with gifts for the child, still clutching her broom. But it was too late – the Magi were long gone. Ever since then the old woman has been known as “La Befana” or simply “Befana.” On the eve of January 6th, Befana flies from house to house on her old broomstick and delivers all the gifts she didn’t give to the Holy Child to good girls and boys. In fact, Befana’s name is the Greek word “epifania” or “epiphany,” and is significant because the religious feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th. This Christian celebration, in remembrance of the Magi’s visit to Jesus, can include purifying rites and benedictions with water. Water prepared on the eve of the Epiphany is said to have sacred properties that can ward off evil spirits and is used in critical moments of a family’s life.

  • CHRISTMAS in Italy (Grugliasco)
    1. CHRISTMAS At Christmas, people remember when Jesus Christ was born and the Christian religion started. Today, Christmas is a very important time in the Christian year, but it is also very important to those who do not go to church. It is a time for buying and giving presents, having parties, and being with family. People start get ready for Christmas in November. Shop-keepers decorate their shops with lights, trees and other decorations, and shoppers start to look for presents. Shops get very busy and stay open later. People with family and friends in other countries often send them cards and presents, and everyone begins to make plans for the coming holidays. An interesting theory connects the tradition of exchanging gifts to an ancient Roman festivity in honour of Ianus and Strenia (in Italian a Christmas gift is called strenna ), celebrated at the beginning of the year, when Romans were used to giving each other presents. In the middle of December, most families buy a Christmas tree and make the Presepe, and put them inside the house, adding colourful decorations. 2. CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENES Christmas crib remembers where Jesus Christ was born. It is one of the oldest and most beloved Christmas tradition in Italy. In 1223, in Greccio, a village in Umbria (Central Italy), St. Francis from Assisi made the 1st living nativity scene, in Italy. Today the crib is an important Christmas tradition for Italian people. Some days before Christmas we start to build the crib. At first we build the landscape: the mountains, in the background and a green meadow in front of them.
