A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last Thursday we began the month of October. The Church, as you know, dedicates October as the month of the Holy Rosary. This dedication centers on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary which we will celebrate on Wednesday, the 7th. This feast commemorates the victory of the Christian fleet over Ottoman Muslims at the naval Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. This victory prevented an Ottoman control of the entire Mediterranean Sea and an Islamic invasion of Christian Europe. Pope St. Pius V (1504-1572), seeing this event through the lens of faith, unhesitatingly attributed the victory to the power of the Rosary more than the cannons and the bravery of the Christian soldiers who fought there.

The 6,700-pound statue carved from a single block of white Cararra marble was smashed by several hammer blows shortly before noon Pentecost Sunday, May 20, in its side chapel in St. Peter's Basilica. The statue, portraying the sorrowing Virgin holding the limp, dead body of Christ, is world famous and considered perhaps the most valued treasure of the Vatican. ACCORDING to visitors in the church at the time, a bearded man leaped over a low marble railing of the chapel, jumped on a table in front of the statue and began flailing away with a mason's hammer. Images of fortress-like office buildings and public halls with imposing facades of rusticated stone dominate our view of neo-Romanesque architecture from the Kaiserreich (1871-1918). The three religious buildings at the core of this study - Edwin Oppler’s New Synagogue in Breslau (1866-1872), Christoph Hehl’s Catholic Rosary Church in Berlin-Steglitz (1899-1900), and Friedrich Adler’s Protestant Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem (1893-1898) – offer compelling counter- examples of the ways in which religious groups, especially those that were local minorities, adapted the dominant neo-Romanesque style to their own particular quest towards distinctive assimilation in an increasingly complex, national, modern society.
