Weekend Presider DEACON AUGIE WON Permanent Deacon History of the Rosary by Fr. Larry Rice Without a doubt, one of the most well-known and easily recognized Catholic devotional practices is praying the Rosary. The actual origin of the Rosary is very hard to trace. According to tradition, an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Dominic in the year 1214. Another theory is that the Rosary began as a way for the laity to imitate the monastic practice of praying the Liturgy of the Hours. Because most of the laity, and even many monks, could not read, they substituted 150 repetitions of the Our Father for the Psalms, sometimes using a knotted cord to keep count of the prayers. In the twelfth century, the rule of English Anchorites, Ancrene Wisse, spec-ified how groups of 50 Hail Marys were to be broken into five decades of ten prayers each. The practice of meditation while praying the Rosary is attributed to Dominic of Prussia, a Carthusian monk. Other monastics added additional prayers. There was very little change in the structure of the Rosary between the sixteenth and twentieth century. In the years following World War II, Holy Cross Father Patrick Peyton began the Family Rosary Crusade, promoting the devotion on radio and television until his death in 1992. In the year 2002, Pope John Paul II instituted five new optional mysteries: the Luminous Mysteries. Rosaries can be made from a wide variety of materials, from cheap plastic beads to precious jewels. Once they have been blessed, they are considered a sacramental and should not be bought or sold. Oh, and a rosary should not be worn around the neck like a necklace. Fr. Rice is Vocations Director for the Paulist Fathers. Around the Parish-Events & Notices Masses Intentions Join us this summer for Bishop Robert Barron’s Saturday - July 29 “Pivotal Players” Series! He found his way to the United States and into the Congregation of Holy Cross. While a seminarian and studying at Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., Patrick was stricken with tuberculosis. For almost a full year Patrick languished in his hospital bed at Notre Dame. A wise, elderly priest encouraged him to put his trust in the power of Mary’s intercession. Almost immediately doctors saw signs of improvement and could not explain his recovery. Patrick was convinced that he had regained his health and strength through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. In gratitude to Our Lady, he was determined to spend the rest of his life promoting devotion to her so everyone would come to know the blessings that she is eager to bestow on those who turn to her with confidence and love.
