A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last Thursday we began the month of October. The Church, as you know, dedicates October as the month of the Holy Rosary. This dedication centers on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary which we will celebrate on Wednesday, the 7th. This feast commemorates the victory of the Christian fleet over Ottoman Muslims at the naval Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. This victory prevented an Ottoman control of the entire Mediterranean Sea and an Islamic invasion of Christian Europe. Pope St. Pius V (1504-1572), seeing this event through the lens of faith, unhesitatingly attributed the victory to the power of the Rosary more than the cannons and the bravery of the Christian soldiers who fought there. Consequently, he instituted the feast to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gave the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the Christian faithful during this historic battle at Lepanto in Greece. Down the centuries after Lepanto, there occurred numerous events when our Lady came to the aid of the Church in the face of danger. And the Church always expressed a great sense of gratitude through praying the Rosary. In our days, when dangers far greater than those of the ancient invaders threaten not only our freedom but our Christian way of life, we are urged by our Blessed Mother to turn again to the Rosary for help. If we do this in faith, we can be more confident that we will be delivered from our dangers. Today, our clear and present dangers are not only the might of arms of those who want to destroy America but also those who want to destroy our Christian way of life and traditional American values. Secularism and the culture of death are forces that attack us not from outside but from within our society. They are the enemies that try to destroy us in the name of liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As the month of October is also Respect Life Month, let us combat the culture of death with prayers and the Rosary as our most powerful weapon. Let us pray for the end of abortion in our country and beyond. Let us promote and defend life whenever and wherever we can. All lives matter! Fr. Patrick Peyton, the founder of the Family Rosary Crusade, dedicated his life to convincing families to recite the rosary together daily. He said, “The family that prays together, stays together.” What a relevant call for us all considering the persistently high rate of divorce and the on-going assault on the traditional marriage in our society today. In this month of October, let us also consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means to pray for America so that our country, which is founded on Christian values and precepts, may be delivered from dangers inside and out. In taking on human flesh, dwelling among us, and sacrificing his very life for our redemption, Christ reveals the profound dignity of every human person. This God-given dignity does not change with our stage of life, abili- ties, level of independence, or any other varying circumstance. Rather, it is rooted in the permanent fact that each of us is made in the image and likeness of God, created to share in the very life of God himself. The human person is a “manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory” (EV 34). And we must reflect this truth in how we act and how we treat one another. The truth of the Gospel of life is at the foundation of who we are as followers of Christ. In his earthly life, Jesus provided the perfect model for how we are to love our neighbor and live out the Gospel call: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Mt. 25:40). Jesus calls each of us to “care for the other as a person for whom God has made us respon- sible” (EV 87). The Gospel of life is intrinsic to the whole Christian life and foundational to the decisions we make on a daily basis. For, “the Gospel of God’s love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indivisible Gospel” (EV 2, em- phasis added). In his encyclical on the Gospel of life, Pope St. John Paul II recognizes the full range of threats against human life, from poverty and malnutrition to murder and war. He places particular emphasis, however, on threats to life at its beginning and end—precisely when it is most in need of protection. In modern times, children in their mothers’ wombs and those approach- ing the end of their lives are certainly among the “least of these” in our world’s estimation. Practices such as abortion and assisted suicide tragically reject the truth that human life is always to be cherished and defended with loving concern. As the Church celebrates the 25th anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II’s prophetic encyclical, let us reflect on how we personally live out the Gospel: Do I talk about and act towards oth- ers as I would talk about and treat Jesus himself? Do I inform myself of the Church’s teach- ings and engage in the civic arena as first a follower of Christ? Do I support and advocate for laws and policies that protect and defend human life? Do I help pregnant and parenting mothers in need? Am I ready to support a loved one nearing death? Through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, may Our Lord grant us the grace to truly and courageously live his Gospel of life.
