Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 12. We ended the last episode with Dong Zhuo having been lured back to the capital thinking that the emperor is about to abdicate and give him the throne. And he kept thinking that despite a number of ominous signs along the way telling him otherwise. One of the wheels on his carriage broke. His horse started acting up. And then he heard some rather melancholy words in a children’s song. The credit for keeping this pretense going belongs to Li Su (4), the man who was sent to deliver the fake message to lure Dong Zhuo to his doom. At every turn, Li Su explained away what looked like bad omens and turned them into auspicious signs instead, and Dong Zhuo believed him. But the lyrics of the children’s song were not, as Li Su had said, foretelling Dong Zhuo’s rise to the throne. Instead, they foretold his downfall. The meaning of the words can’t be explained without actually seeing the Chinese characters, so instead of trying to explain it verbally on this podcast, I’ve posted a visual explanation on the website, so check it out. It’s a type of Chinese wordplay that we’ll see again later in the novel, and it’s pretty neat. So anyway, the next morning, Dong Zhuo set out for court. Along the way, he saw a Taoist priest, wearing a dark robe and a white headdress, carrying a long staff. Tied to the staff was a 10-foot-long piece of white cloth, and at the either end of the cloth was written the character for “mouth”.

  • THE GREAT ERA of ART COLLECTING in CHINA Emperor Taizong and His Followers
BBognaogna ŁakomskaŁakomska Academy of Fine Arts, Gdansk The State Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw Polish Institute of World Art Studies THE GREAT ERA OF ART COLLECTING IN CHINA Emperor Taizong and his followers n 618 AD when the Tang dynasty was founded, the Imperial Storehouse had merely three hundred scrolls, but all of them were regarded as treasures Ihanded down from the Sui dynasty.1) This small collection, however, only began to grow when on the throne sat Emperor Taizong 太宗 (626 – 649 AD) – one of the greatest art collectors of all times. An excellent scholar and calligra- pher, interested in art himself, Taizong almost fanatically began to buy art from private individuals.2) As a result, by the year 632 AD in the imperial collection there were already over 1,500 scrolls of calligraphy.3) The Imperial Storehouse was much more than simply a repository for art works. It was an exclusive institution uniting excellent intellectuals, artists and capable officials, who also were outstanding experts in art. Its core constituted a counsel of three authorities: Yu Shinan 虞世南 (558 – 638 AD) – once Emperor Taizong’s teacher of calligraphy; Wei Zheng 魏徵 (580 – 643 AD) – a brilliant officer and the emperor’s adviser; and Chu Suiliang 褚遂良 (597 – 658 AD) – 1) Acker (1979: 127). 2) In sponsored by the Emperor Huizong 徽宗 (1100 – 1126) the Xuanhe Huapu宣和画谱 (Catalogue of Paintings of the Xuanhe Emperor [Huizong]), there is a following description of Emperor Taizong as an artist as well as a patron of art: “…Taizong was good at fei bai飞白 (fl ying white) and gave some of his pieces in it to his top offi cials.

  • Power, Identity and Antiquarian Approaches in Modern Chinese Art
Power, identity and antiquarian approaches in modern Chinese art Chia-Ling Yang Within China, nationalistic sentiments notably inhibit objective analysis of Sino- Japanese and Sino-Western cultural exchanges during the end of the Qing dynasty and throughout the Republican period: the fact that China was occupied by external and internal powers, including foreign countries and Chinese warlords, ensured that China at this time was not governed or united by one political body. The contemporary concept of ‘China’ as ‘one nation’ has been subject to debate, and as such, it is also difficult to define what the term ‘Chinese painting’ means.1 The term, guohua 國畫 or maobihua 毛筆畫 (brush painting) has traditionally been translated as ‘Chinese national painting’. 2 While investigating the formation of the concept of guohua, one might question what guo 國 actually means in the context of guohua. It could refer to ‘Nationalist painting’ as in the Nationalist Party, Guomindang 國民黨, which was in power in early 20th century China. It could also be translated as ‘Republican painting’, named after minguo 民國 (Republic of China). These political sentiments had a direct impact on guoxue 國學 (National Learning) and guocui 國粹 (National Essence), textual evidence and antiquarian studies on the development of Chinese history and art history. With great concern over the direction that modern Chinese painting should take, many prolific artists and intellectuals sought inspiration from jinshixue 金石學 (metal and stone studies/epigraphy) as a way to revitalise the Chinese

  • Civil Laws and Civil Justice in Early China by Zhaoyang Zhang A
Civil Laws and Civil Justice in Early China By Zhaoyang Zhang A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History In the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Michael Nylan, Chair Professor David Johnson Professor David Cohen Fall 2010 Copyright 2010 by Zhang, Zhaoyang All rights reserved Abstract Civil Laws and Civil Justice in Early China by Zhaoyang Zhang Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Michael Nylan, Chair Civil laws and civil justice in early China have not received sufficient scholarly attention, because scholars tend to assume that laws in pre-modern China were merely criminal laws promulgated and enforced to maintain public order. This dissertation challenges that view by analyzing excavated evidence and reexamining transmitted evidence. Chapter One establishes the existence of civil laws in early China by examining non- criminal case reports preserved in the Juyan 居延 strips and by assessing the role of district bailiffs in handling civil disputes. Chapter Two further demonstrates the existence of civil laws and reveals the civil justice system by studying domestic statutes and how two cases of inheritance disputes preserved in the Comprehensive Discussion of Customs (Fengsu tongyi 風俗通義, comp. ca. 200) illustrate the application of these statutes. Chapter Three examines two important civil legal concepts: zhi 直 (a straight account of the facts) and mingfen 名分 (title and portion) to reveal the underlining notions that uniformly guided the application of the civil laws. Chapter Four, the concluding chapter, goes beyond the boundaries of civil laws to address larger issues, such as the legal ideal of reforming people’s morals to reduce lawsuits, the relationship between rituals and laws, and the Classics as a source of legal authority in litigations.

religions Article Rebels in Biblical and Chinese Texts: A Comparative y Study on the Interplay of Myth and History Aryeh Amihay 1,* and Lupeng Li 2,* 1 Department of Religious Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106, USA 2 School of Foreign Languages, Xidian University, Xi’an 710126, China * Correspondence: [email protected] (A.A.); [email protected] (L.L.) We collaborated on this study while Lupeng Li was a visiting scholar at University of California, y Santa Barbara, enabled by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). We are grateful to the CSC and to Fabio Rambelli, chair of the Department of Religious Studies at UCSB, for their support. At our early stages of research, we were fortunate to receive advice and encouragement from Shadi Bartsch-Zimmer, Jianshu Liu, and Lydia Lee. We thank them all, as well as the anonymous readers for the journal. Received: 27 July 2020; Accepted: 16 October 2020; Published: 1 December 2020 Abstract: This study offers a new approach for studying biblical myth in two directions: first, by expanding the scope of investigation beyond the clearly mythological elements to other areas of biblical literature, and second, by drawing comparisons to classical Chinese literature. This article thus reconsiders the relationship between myth and history in both biblical and Chinese literature, while seeking to broaden the endeavor of the comparative method in biblical studies. Two examples are offered: (1) the story of Moses’s call narrative and his relationship with Aaron in Exodus in light of the story of Xiang Liang and Xiang Ji in the Shiji; (2) the story of Saul and David in 1 Samuel compared with the story of Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
