Tweets Generated in Relation to Adolescent Response to Teen Mom ………………….64 xii Abstract Sexual Messages in Reality Television: An Examination of Sexual Messages Targeting an Adolescent Audience through Social Media Erica Lynn Fiocco The goal of this thesis is to examine the frequency in which sexual messages occur on reality television programs targeting an adolescent audience and if the frequency of sexual messaging will effect decision making positively or negatively. A case study explores the concept of sexual messages targeting adolescent audiences on television and other media providing an analysis of how sex is presented, the types of messages, and the frequency in which these messages occur. Secondly, the thesis provides original research in the form of content analysis to reveal perceptions of sexual messages presented to adolescents and if they are perceived positively or negatively through twitter discussion. In addition, this research will also shed light on the frequency in which television networks are employing social responsibility by including safe sex messages and additional resources on social media in juxtaposition with their efforts on television. iv 1 CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction When many people think about how they were introduced to the subject of sexuality, we would expect many of them would think of their parents, peers, and educators. The present research explored how individual difference variables influence the extent to which one likes a tobacco advertisement, and how liking a tobacco advertisement predicts tobacco susceptibility and change in tobacco use after one year. Additionally, the effect of attitudes toward tobacco print advertisements was hypothesized to be conditioned on dispositional variables including sensation seeking and delay discounting. The sample consisted of a total of 1,221 eleven- to sixteen-year-old boys from urban and rural counties in Ohio. Participants completed a survey at baseline and were exposed to print magazine advertisements for e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco, alcohol, and soft drinks and subsequently asked their attitudes toward the respective advertisements. Attitudes toward tobacco advertising significantly mediated the relationship between the individual difference variables and baseline tobacco susceptible, but no evidence of mediation was found for the 12-month use analyses. The effect of adolescents’ attitudes toward tobacco advertisements was a significant predictor of change in e-cigarette and smokeless tobacco use at 12-months and was conditioned on one’s level of sensation seeking.

Noblit) This nontraditional dissertation, which I prefer to label as a manuscript, is a qualitative study that explores the complexities of life in the South Bronx. This manuscript represents my multifaceted journey as a young Puerto Rican man making meaning of life in the South Bronx as well as making meaning of my lived experiences navigating through academia. This journey implicitly employs a theoretical framework of détournement, critical race theory, lived experience, and representation in order to construct a counterstory that critiques popular and distorted (stereotypical) representations of life in the South Bronx. Additionally, this manuscript examines the complexities in the representations of Hiphop. Along this journey I explored the life of world renowned Hiphop pioneer, Phase 2. Phase 2’s experiences and knowledge concerning interpretations of the origins, shifts, and objectifying of Hiphop speak to its [Hiphop’s] social origins, evolution, and position in reality. The lived experiences of Phase 2 are mirrored against my own lived experiences in order to create a dialogue that speaks to Hiphop as culturally lived experiences rather than a set of elements (rapping, break dancing, aerosol art, and dee jaying) to which Hiphop is often reduced.
