They will be able to oversee the development of buildings to be fit for purpose and lead the strengthening of the Cathedral’s financial and governance resilience. I am aware that the Cathedral requires stability and continuity (the number of Deans in the past decade or so leaves the Cathedral feeling somewhat vulnerable) but partnered with creativity and challenge. There is much that is good and strong, and the potential is considerable. The Diocese of Derby, too, is in transition, facing considerable challenge and exciting opportunity. The Dean will be a partner in that wider vision setting and strategic planning for the whole diocese. The new Dean, therefore, will have a wide perspective and a long view, and be able to expand horizons and raise expectations for the Cathedral, city and diocese.

Bishop Libby is currently the Suffragan Bishop of Stockport, in the Diocese of Chester – a post she has occupied since 2015. Libby describes Derbyshire as ‘the place that holds my heart’. She grew up in Glossop in the north-west of the county and was selected for ordination while working in the parish of St Thomas Brampton, Chesterfield. Bishop Libby said: “I am excited and privileged to have been called to serve as Bishop of Derby. “I grew up here and my vocation was fostered here. Derbyshire nurtured me and brought me to faith and I want to love Derbyshire back. “I want to lead a church in Derbyshire where people find hope because they know they are loved by God in Christ, and I pray that hope sets us free to live our lives in ways that bring change for good.” On hearing the news, the Dean of Derby, the Very Reverend Dr Stephen Hance, said: “I am thrilled that Libby is coming to be our bishop. Ambition, creativity and achievement abound in all those groups. The clearest evidence of all three qualities was apparent at the end of September when, on an extraordinarily balmy Friday afternoon, Jeremy Filsell (Keble 1982) gave the inaugural recital on the new Tickell organ in the College chapel. It was a splendid occasion on which we were able to celebrate the generosity of those who had contributed to this important project. One of the pieces in the recital programme, and receiving its first performance, was a Toccata written by Professor John Caldwell, Music Fellow here from 1967-92. The College now has an instrument which is perhaps the best in Oxford. This is rather shorter than previous letters from the Warden in The Record. That reflects the fact that we are changing the format of College publications and I and others now have the opportunity to write on various aspects of the life of the College in different formats.
