Dean of Derby Candidate Briefing Pack October 2019 CONTENTS Foreword from the Bishop of Derby .................................................................................................... 3 Dean of Derby Role Profile ..................................................................................................................... 4 Context ........................................................................................................................................................ 7 Additional Information............................................................................................................................ 11 Foreword from the Bishop of Derby I am hoping to appoint a Dean with imagination, drive and energy to lead the Cathedral forward in its mission and ministry as we enter a new decade, and a new phase of life across the diocese. The next Dean of Derby will be committed to the nurture of the Cathedral community in faith, witness and service, growing its current congregations, and discovering ways to reach new and more diverse people. The Dean will continue to be creative about growing the influence and reach of the cathedral as a key partner in the city and region. They will be able to oversee the development of buildings to be fit for purpose and lead the strengthening of the Cathedral’s financial and governance resilience. I am aware that the Cathedral requires stability and continuity (the number of Deans in the past decade or so leaves the Cathedral feeling somewhat vulnerable) but partnered with creativity and challenge. There is much that is good and strong, and the potential is considerable. The Diocese of Derby, too, is in transition, facing considerable challenge and exciting opportunity. The Dean will be a partner in that wider vision setting and strategic planning for the whole diocese. The new Dean, therefore, will have a wide perspective and a long view, and be able to expand horizons and raise expectations for the Cathedral, city and diocese.

  • The Impact of Community Ministry on Church Health in the Anglican
ABSTRACT THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY MINISTRY ON CHURCH HEALTH IN THE ANGLICAN CHURCHES OF SOUTH LONDON by Stephen Hance The church in the United Kingdom has experienced a long period of decline and malaise in terms of cultural influence, numerical strength, and mobilization of its members. This period coincided with a time of retrenchment in the evangelical wing of the church particularly, in which mission came to be narrowly identified with proclamation evangelism at the expense of a broader and more holistic perspective. More recently a movement has emerged within the British church to live out a broader definition of the mission of God in the world, expressing mission in community ministry and service as well as other forms of evangelism. This research studied churches that are part of this movement in order to understand what the impact of this holistic mission practice is upon the health of a local church. First, it surveyed a cross-section of churches by means of a questionnaire. Second, it analyzed in more depth a smaller sample of churches that have embraced community ministry as part of a holistic approach to mission. It concluded that this approach has significant success in combating the symptoms of church malaise. DISSERTATION APPROVAL This is to certify that the dissertation entitled THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY MINISTRY ON CHURCH HEALTH IN THE ANGLICAN CHURCHES OF SOUTH LONDON presented by Stephen Hance has been accepted towards fulfillment of the requirements for the DOCTOR OF MINISTRY degree at Asbury Theological Seminary May

Strictly embargoed until 10:05, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 Press release from the Diocese of Derby Bishop Libby Lane named as next Bishop of Derby The next Bishop of Derby will be the Right Reverend Libby Lane, Downing Street has announced. Bishop Libby is currently the Suffragan Bishop of Stockport, in the Diocese of Chester – a post she has occupied since 2015. Libby describes Derbyshire as ‘the place that holds my heart’. She grew up in Glossop in the north-west of the county and was selected for ordination while working in the parish of St Thomas Brampton, Chesterfield. Derbyshire nurtured me and brought me to faith and I want to love Derbyshire back. “I want to lead a church in Derbyshire where people find hope because they know they are loved by God in Christ, and I pray that hope sets us free to live our lives in ways that bring change for good.” On hearing the news, the Dean of Derby, the Very Reverend Dr Stephen Hance, said: “I am thrilled that Libby is coming to be our bishop. Her roots are here in Derbyshire, and we are all very much looking forward to welcoming her home and working with her in the months and years ahead. “This announcement presents us with an opportunity to think afresh, about who we are and who we hope to be, about the opportunities and challenges that face us as we move forward.” Bishop Libby is marking today’s announcement by visiting a number of communities in the Diocese.
