@ryanfurnell STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING The outer sandbars at Alva Beach (Lynch’s Beach) create flat water lagoons even in windy conditions providing a haven for stand up paddle boarders. Look beneath the surface as you glide along - the abundance of marine life so close to shore will astound you. SOLDIER CRAB MARCHING Amidst the flow of tides the seashore teems with life at Alva. Armies of soldier crabs march across the tidal mudflats at low tide, quickly corkscrewing into the mud if disturbed. The tiny crabs, just 15mm wide, march in their thousands. It is a sight to behold. WHALE WATCHING Every year from June to August whales migrate north from Antarctica to holiday in the warm waters off Queensland before making their southern return between September and November. The shallow and sheltered waters around the reef offer an ideal calving ground and nursery for newborn whales. Be on the lookout from June to August and you’ll be sure to see a humpback whale while out boating around Cape Upstart or from the shores of one of our beaches.

www.visitburdekin.com.au 23 WILDLIFE The Burdekin is teeming with wildlife - you just have to know where to look.

CROCODILES If your heart is set on spotting a crocodile in the wild then the @fournamesdave winter months are the ideal time when crocodiles come out to sun themselves. Crocodiles inhabit most of the Burdekin’s waterways and esturaries as well as the coastal waters. Saltwater crocodiles are the largest living reptile on earth growing up to 7m in length. With formidable jaws, incredible speed and unfathomable power they are not an animal you want to get close to. Be croc-wise when visiting North Queensland, always keep a distance from crocodile inhabited areas, look for warning signs and never camp near the waters edge. TURTLES Did you know that six of the world’s turtle species call the Great Barrier Reef home? Green Sea Turtles are often spotted at the SS Yongla Wreck Dive Site, feeding or sleeping. Other @aerial_spark turtle species that frequent the area are the Hawksbill Sea Turtle and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. It is not uncommon for divers to see up to six or seven turtles during a single dive! MANTA RAYS The largest of all rays with a wingspan of up to seven metres, they are a favourite marine species amongst divers and are often seen at the SS Yongala Dive Site. With the largest brain to body weight ratio of any living fish they are very inquisitive creatures. ROCK WALLABY These acrobats of the marsupial world leap and bound their way around the large boulders and cliff ledges of Mt Inkerman. Their medium size and sharp claws enable them to climb rocks and even tall trees. Dusk is the best time to see them when they come to feed, Mt Inkerman is also one of the best places to enjoy a Burdekin sunset. BIRDS The Burdekin rivals Kakadu when it comes to birds with over 280 species of birds inhabiting the area. More than 20,000 water birds visit the Ramsar- listed Cromarty Wetlands each year. The Burdekin inland pastoral areas and dry woodlands are a favourable feeding ground for emus. Head out to Clare or the Dalbeg area in the winter months to catch a glimpse of one.

Whether it’s learning about one of the oldest living societies on the planet or catching a flick at one of the last drive-in theatres in Queensland, the Burdekin offers a diverse range of cultural experiences. The Gudjuda Reference Group honours the cultural heritage of the traditional owners of the land. The group watches over six Aboriginal clans, the Bindal, Juru, Gia, Birriah, Jangga and Ngaro groups. The Juru Walk at the southern end of Plantation Park provides an important bond to the Burdekin’s Aboriginal history. A bush tucker garden was planted alongside the walk and features more than 30 species of plants. Plantation Park is also home to a 60m carpet snake sculpture, Gubulla Munda, which was built by the Gudjuda Reference Group in 2004 to celebrate and promote indigenous culture. The sculpture marks the significance of the site as a traditional burial ground. Across from the sculpture is the Gudjuda Reference Group’s Gudjuda Deck Cafe. The Burdekin Theatre in the main street of Ayr is a great place to catch a show. It also features the Gallery of the Stars photographic display of the big names who have performed at the theatre. The water feature at the front of the theatre was created to recognise the importance of water to the Burdekin region. Movie buffs should head to theBurdekin Delta Cinemas in Queen St, Ayr. Owned by world-renowned golfer Karrie Webb and her parents, the cinema operates five nights per week screening the latest hits straight from Hollywood. For those who want to step back in time, the Burdekin is also home to one of the last remaining drive-in theatres. The Stardust Drive-In, located in Ayr offers a great family outing with family movies screening double features regularly and an onsite fairy garden, mini golf and Silver Screens and Coffee Beans Cafe. In addition to Gubulla Munda, the Burdekin is home to a number of sculptures and art murals. The Giant Cane Cutters, at the Gudjuda Home Hill Showgrounds connect indigenous and non-indigenous people of the region symbolising the region’s rich agricultural heritage and back breaking work of days gone by. A sculpture near the Burdekin Library in Ayr was made entirely from locally- sourced parts. The artwork, Moving Forward, depicts family.

40 REGIONAL COMMUNITIES The Burdekin is comprised of many small communities each offering a unique experience. BRANDON Brandon is one of the most historic towns in the region. The Brandon Heritage Precinct is home to the restored St Patrick’s Catholic Church, the former Brandon Railway Station and the Burdekin Machinery Preservationists. The extensive display of sugar industry machinery is housed in the former Renown Theatre building. There is also the John Tait Steam Gallery, the Alf Shand Blacksmith Shop and the Fielding Engine Shed. The most significant item on display is the 1911 Marshall Colonial tractor, which has been restored and is in working order. It is the only one of its kind remaining in Australia. CLARE Clare is situated half an hour west of Ayr and boasts a swimming pool, school, corner store and the Clare Club. Farmers in the Clare area grow sugar cane and horticulture crops. DALBEG Dalbeg is situated on the banks of the Burdekin River. It is a strong rural community which grows sugar cane, sandalwood trees and horticulture crops. On the drive to Dalbeg is Cornford Lookout which offers a magnificent view of the Burdekin River. GIRU When it floods there is only one thing to do in Giru, jump in the tinny and head to the pub. Luckily, when it is dry, there are plenty of other things to do in the town. Situated between Ayr and Townsville, just minutes from the highway, Giru is home to Invicta Mill, the Giru International Hotel and the Haughton River. The town is centred around Invicta Mill and during the crushing season (typically June to November) the sweet aroma of crushed sugar cane can be smelt throughout the town. The town offers a beautiful, lush park which affords a great view of the mill for those who want to see it in action. If you happen to be visiting in the second half of the year, you’ll likely see clouds of white steam billowing from the top of those stacks. This is when the region’s four sugar mills are in full swing, crushing the massive cane crop and processing it into raw sugar. All four sugar mills are owned by Wilmar Sugar.
