The provinces are: Bari (capital), Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce, Barletta- Andria-Trani and Taranto. Puglia offers a wide range of sites that talk about the ancient origins of this land: from prehistory to Magna Graecia, from the Imperial Age to the Renaissance, baroque glories of Lecce, Salento and Martina Franca. The “Trulli”, such as Valle D’Itria’s one, offers a beautiful testimony of the rural past of the region meanwhile numerous castles emerge along the southern coasts, recalling the time when goods and dangers came from the sea. For a full immersion in history and tradition, Alberobello is a must. Homeland of the "trulli", picturesque stone houses and conical roof built by hand without mortar, unique in its kind to be included in the World Heritage list by UNESCO. Besides its trulli, Apulia hosts another UNESCO site in the town of Andria, Castel del Monte, an unrivalled masterpiece of mediaeval architecture commisioned by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen in the XIII century. ALBEROBELLO It is interesting to know that the number 8 is the motif of the castle:the sides of the castle are eight, the rooms of the ground floor and the first floor are eight, and the grand octagonal-planned towers are eight- sided as well. CASTEL DEL MONTE ………………………………………………………………................... www.culturaedintorni.org - Street Parparo G/2 – Martina Franca (TA) – tel. 366 251 6872 – fax. 080 4490204 Also interesting is the architecture of the old town center of Putignano, known for its famous carnival, and Castellana Grotte, known for its intriguing underground caves. WHITE CAVES, CAVES OF CASTELLANA GROTTE On the coastal strip sits the old village of Polignano, located on a sheer cliff overlooking a sea full of natural grottoes and caves, as well as Monopoli, with one of the best coastlines in the province. Scattered about are ancient farmhouses, villas and the remains of ancient civilizations. POLIGNANO The beautiful city of Ostuni stands out against the intense green of the olive trees, with the whitewashed old town crossed by a maze of alleys and courtyards, low houses and narrow passageways that are overlooked by the majestic Cathedral. OSTUNI ………………………………………………………………................... www.culturaedintorni.org - Street Parparo G/2 – Martina Franca (TA) – tel. 366 251 6872 – fax. 080 4490204 Continuing the journey inland, Cisternino is the “capital” of the Valle D’Itria, where white houses, narrow alleyways, courtyards and staircases, arches and balconies adorned with colorful flowers together create this small architectural jewel. Historic Medieval and Renaissance buildings make walking through the streets of the old town an even more interesting experience. Lying on a plain at the foot of the Salento Plateau is Lecce - the "Florence of the South" - one of the most interesting cities in the region for its architecture, typical of the 17th Century. A visit to Lecce can begin with Piazza Duomo, once used as a fortress and today considered the most elegant "salon" in the city. Not far away, Piazza Sant'Oronzo narrates the city's entire history. The Roman period is visible in the ruins of the Amphitheatre that becomes the exceptional stage for theatrical performances in summertime, and in part by the high Column - on which stands a bronze of St. Orontius, depicted in the act of blessing - erected in the 17th Century utilizing some of the Roman columns positioned on the Ancient Appian Way. Symbol of the Renaissance is Palazzo del Seggio, known as the "Seat," which today hosts important art exhibitions, and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, with its interesting frescoes and works sculpted in wood. Not to be missed is a visit to the Basilica di Santa Croce, where the inspiration of master masonry is visible in every part of the monumental façade that anticipates the beauty of its interior, a harmonious balance between the sobriety of the classical style and the splendor of Lecce's Baroque. At Santa Maria di Leuca the calm and crystalline waters of the Ionian Sea mix with those of the intense and azure Adriatic. Sea lovers have multile options in Apulia, from Gallipoli, the “Gem of Salento”, to Gargano, “Italy’s Buttress”, which protrudes out into the clear sea,
