“ ” O f this revised edition the Allerton Family, does not intend to detract from the great credit to be given Mr . Walter S. Allerton for 1 8 8 8 his publication of , but simply to add facts which have been found since that time , and to correct errors which almost invariably occur in Genealogies through incorrect family records thought to be r true when published , but afterward found othe wise .

1 8 8 8 . S. In the preface to the edition Of Mr Walter Allerton says , in part :

o f to Pride ancestry is common all ages and all peoples , and it is an entirely proper and j ustifiable sentiment . We know that man , like

th e ff other animals , possesses power to transmit to his o spring the mental and physical characteristics that have been most prominent in f himself . Students o social science tell us that the children Of crim in als are apt to prove criminals themselves , and other things being

Wh o equal , the man can trace his descent through a dozen generations o f honest men is for that very reason more likely to prove himself an honest man . The history o f the Allerton family is a strong proof o f the endur ing quality Of family traits and characteristics , both physical and

m o f mental , for we find in embers two branches , that have been entirely separated for two centuries , the same physical appearance and the same

- mental peculiarities . We find in a maj ority of the family to day many h resemblances in personal appearance to t eir common ancestor , and we find still more prominent the same peculiarities o f mind and dis 6 THE ALLERTON F A M ILY.

position . We are proud to recognize the same spirit Of honesty and independence that led him to cas t in his lot with the adventurers o f

o f New Plymouth , and the same broadness Of mind and toleration the Opinions o f others that brought him into conflict with the narrow

e o f spirit o f puritani sm . W claim a share his courage and his enter prise , and we admit that we have also inherited somewhat of his quick f temper and o his wandering disposition and unsettled spirit . The Allertons have ever been wanderers ; they can point to no one place

o f an as the home their family , the same restless spirit that led their ce s t o rs up and down upon the earth has appeared to be always with them . It is only in a few rare cases that we find the son continuing to dwell where his father dwelt before him ; and this fact , while aff ording another proof o f the possession o f common traits o f char acter, has rendered it difficult to collect a complete genealogical record o f the family .

The author began the work o f collecting material f o r a family history some ten years since , and pursued it in such time as could be

an spared from the practice of his profession , but he soon found that other had been f o r a long time at work in the same fi eld . The late A Y Mead llerton Of Newark , Wayne County , New ork , after working for many years at this task , left at his death a large and valuable

’ manuscript , which was placed in the author s hands by his widow , and

f o r from which many details this volume were Obtained , especially in

o f regard to the fourth , fifth and sixth generations the Rhode Island

Y . h o w and New ork branches Mead Allerton had not been able , ever , to collect much information about the New Jersey branch , and f to obtain this has been the most difficult part o the work .

The name o f Allerton is o n e that is comparatively common in some U parts of England , and there are several families now in the nited

States who are in no way related to us , being emigrants from England

o r —a A t themselves descendants of such , list Of these ller ons will be found at the end of the genealogical record . The beauty of the name has also caused it to be frequently used by novelists and other writers , THE A LLERTON F A M I LY. 7 and it has also been occasionally assumed by persons not belonging

o f to the family , some Of whom have not been a character calculated l to reflect credit on any fami y . Where ne arly every o n e to whom th e author has applied for in

r fo mation has gladly responded , it may seem unfair to mention any in

u partic lar, but while the author takes this opportunity to thank all

o f who have in any manner assisted him , he feel s that the members the family generally ought to know the names of those who have ren dered particular service . Besides Mead Allerton to whom the greatest

f o r i credit is due many years Of patient and painstak ng research , the author has received valuable assistance from the following persons

O . G . Mrs . Jane Allerton , of Salem , hio

M . Y . James Allerton , Of Port Jervis , New ork

IN reviewin g the history of the Allerton Family o n e very marked

f o r 1 7 60 reference is made to it , the reason that , as early as , the male line became extinct . This line is not important , therefore , to later f generations o Allertons . Isaac 3 born in N e w Haven in 1 65 5 thus becomes the progenitor O f all Allertons of the later generations . 1 7 5 0 in Since the family has largely increased numbers , and at the present time there are several hundred persons living who are Allertons by birth and lineal descendants of Isaac of the Mayflower .

His descendants may be said to embrace three branches; the Rhode

o f 5 N e w Y c Island branch , being the descendants JOhn ; the ork bran h ,

o f 5 being the descendants Isaac , and the New Jersey branch , being the descendants of Zachariah 5

The history o f the Rhode Island branch is very brief ; they resided in Rhode Island and in Windham County , , and were gen e rall o f o f y farmers , but many the sons this family died young and

. n o w unmarried The branch is practically extinct , there being only

n e 5 o male descendant o f John now known to be living . 1 0 THE ALLERTON FA M I LY . Y The New ork branch , after residing in Connecticut about fifty

N e w Y u years , removed to D utchess county , in ork , and to the co nty

o f o n o f Greene , the west bank the Hudson , where many Of them reside

to this day , and from there they gradually followed the general ten

Y O N e w ork , hio , Michigan and Illinois ; while in England , the original f o . home the Pilgrims , there are now less than a dozen members

w o f and This branch , hich is entitled to the honor being the Older principal branch of the family, has always been the most successful , and has contained the larger number of men who have attained to

f o r positions o eminence in professional business life . The New Jersey branch has always shown a roving and unsettled

t n d ifli disposi ion , their history has bee the most varied and the most

4 cult to trace . It is certain that Jesse had at least t wo other sons b e

5 o f sides Zachariah , but no trace any of their descendants have ever been found . There is a tradition , which seems to be entitled to accept

o f ance , that two sons Jesse , after removing to New Jersey with i Zachariah , continued still further nto the wilderness , and settling in the

o f Wyoming valley , were killed with all their families at the time the

O f o f celebrated massacre . There is no mention the name in any the

o f accounts the massacre , but this is not conclusive proof that they

n o t fi n d O f were there at the time , and in most accounts we the names

o f several families Athertons among the victims , and this we know to have been the most common of the many mistaken forms which the if family name has Often taken . It has been very d ficult to Obtain facts

f f N e o f . o o w as to names , dates , etc , the members the Jersey branch the fifth , sixth and seventh generations , and the rule, which has been

o f invariably adhered to , rej ecting every item about which there

o f seemed to be even the suspicion doubt, has rendered it impossible to give many details o f their lives . But the chain of descent has been traced in every case with absolute certainty , so that every living member o f the family can readily follow his o wn line back to the com THE ALLERTON FA M ILY . 1 1 m o n o f ancestor , and can ascertain the exact degree relationship i existing between h mself and any other Allerton . The sons and grandsons of Zachariah gradually drifted from New Jersey westward — O through Pennsylvania to north eastern hio , where the greater num

o f o f ber his descendants now reside , although many them are found i in Michigan , Ind ana and other Western States .

o f - The great maj ority the family are to day , as they have always

to been , farmers . They have never showed a tendency city life , and

f r very few are at present dwelling in any O o u large cities . Outside o f n o f farmi g the occupation most favored has been that machinist .

o f 1 8 1 2 wars , the Revolution , the War , the Mexican war and th e

Rebellion - thus showing their willingness to go forth to battle f o r the defense and preservation o f that liberty which their great an ce s tor had done so much to establish . History also shows that many

Allerton s served the Colonies and Nation in civil capacities .

The Allerton family has as vet given no great names to history ,

o r o f they have never sought office the rewards political strife , the occupations to which they have generally devoted themselves have never been those that lead to fame or to political preferment , they

It will be noticed that the honorable prefi x Mr . is here given to

Brewster and Allerton only . The Street is now called Leyden street and leads from the harbor westward . “ It is probable that Isaac Allerton built a house o n his Garden ” o f Plotte , but if he did he did not occupy it during the entire period

1 63 5 o n his residence in Plymouth , for in , he lived at Rocky Nook ,

’ “ Jones River in Kingston , in a house which he afterwards sold to my ” s o n n e ~ in ~ law o f well beloved Thomas Cushman , the location which is

’ still pointed o u t near the celebrated Elder s spring In March the colonists had grave apprehension o f trouble with

O f - the Indians . On the night the twenty second an attack was ex

O ld and as the chronicle says , The next day , Friday, Captain Standish “ and Mr . Allerton went venturously to visit King , and were “ received by him after his manner. He gave them 3 or 4 groundnuts

and some tobacco .

o f o f As the result this visit a treaty peace was concluded , which

held good f o r more than fifty years .

In April , Governor Carver died , and William Bradford was then

n chose Governor , and Isaac Allerton Assistant Governor, a position

1 6 21 o f In September, , a party ten , including Isaac Allerton , went

a name which it still retains , although it has sometimes been spelled Alderton ; an adj oining hill in the town Of Hull was also known for

many years as Allerton Hill . F o r several years after the landing of l the colonists Isaac Al erton was engaged , as were all the rest, in

building houses and barns for shelter , in clearing and tilling the soil ,

£24 0 0 entire indebtedness , amounting in all to about , and in addition £5 0 they were to pay the Colony per annum in hoes and shoes .

Having satisfactorily arranged the composition with the Adven tu rers m £20 0 and paid the their first installment of , and having paid

other debts , Isaac Allerton returned to Plymouth in the spring of 1 628 h , bringing wit him a supply of goods; and also a patent for a

o n trading station the Kennebec , but when they came to compare the “ patent with the region to which it applied , they found it so strait ” n and ill bounded , that he was again sent to Engla d , for the third

O f time , to obtain the enlargement and correction this patent , and also

n e w f o r an d f o r o f a patent Plymouth , to arrange the removal the

remainder of the church at Leyden . He was compelled to return to

to Plymouth without accomplishing all he had been desired do , but 1 629 being immediately sent back again , in August , , he had better 29 1 63 0 success , and Obtained the desired patent January , . He went to England several times after this o n business for the colonists o r for

himself , crossing the ocean in all seven times . 1 63 0 About this time , , began his trouble with the colonists , or f rather with Governor Bradford , the true cause of which it is di ficult

o f to ascertain , and with a full account which I shall not weary the

’ reader . Bradford s version can be found , written with all the energy

o f and rancour his narrow and prej udiced mind , in the pages of his

famous j ournal , but it is a series Of complaints rather than a statement

o f facts , and evidently fails to state the true grounds of the disagree m ff f ment . We ight O set the complainings o Bradford with the statements o f those who were better able to know the true value of

’ o n e Isaac Allerton s services to the colony ; thus James Sherley , of

u the Advent rers and a steadfast friend of the colonists , writes , March 8 1 629 , , He hath been a truly honest friend to you all , either there “ o f or here . And if any do , as I know some them are apt to speak ill ” o f . o n 1 9 1 629 him , believe them not And again March , , he writes ,

in a letter signed also by Timothy Hatherly , a friend of the colonists

“ B ut ex ec at London , the Lord so blessed his labours (even beyond p THE ALLERTO N FA M I LY . 21

“ tatio n in these evil days) , as he obtained the love and favour Of great men in repute and place , he got granted all Mr . Winslow desired in “ ” his letters to me and more also . Many similar statements might be quoted from letters and writings of other friends to the colony in

n o n Engla d , while the other hand B radford complains bitterly that too much money had been expended in obtaining a charter, and that he had sometimes endeavored to further his o w n interests rather than

o f those the colony . But those who care to examine into the merits will inevitably come to the conclusion reached by a painstaking and

“ impartial historian , that As an agent Mr . Allerton appears to have “ been indefatigable in his attempts to promote the interests Of his f . o employers He was a person uncommon activity , address and

enterprise .

ffi th e The true cause , however, Of this di culty with colonists and with Bradford in particular, is undoubtedly to be found in the fact , m h that he was in ind , education and practice far more liberal t an they , and that while his associations in England with the merchants o f L o n

o f don , and the officers the court and government tended to still further broaden and liberalize his views , their seclusion in the forests and among the dangers o f the little settlement at Plymouth was most admirably calculated to make still n arrow er and more bigoted natures that were already inclined to the most puritan ical o f views . We know that the church at Leyden took off ence at the liberal

’ o f o fl en d e d tendencies Isaac Allerton , that the colonists were greatly at his apparently innocent mistake in employing the notorious Morton

u Of Merry Mount as his secretary , altho gh in these days , Morton would

f o r almost pass a saint , and when he became known as a firm friend o f Roger Williams , and was found to have sheltered and protected

f an d o f many o the oppressed persecuted Quakers , the cup his iniquity

t o was indeed full the minds of the colonists , and we are not surprised

1 63 6 o f th e to hear that about , he left in consequence

o f religious intolerance the people , and went to to

o an d liv e . Like most of his descendants , Isaac Allerton , th ugh a j ust 22 THE ALLERTON FA M I LY .

o f f fair minded man , was a quick temper , apt to resent an af ront , and impetuous in acting upon his impulses , and therefore , when once a diff erence had arisen between him and a maj ority Of the Plymouth colonists , who were no doubt well represented by their narrow and

o f dogmatic governor , there was little possibility any reconciliation , even h ad there been m o re in com m on in their natures and their ways

But about this time misfortunes began to come thick an d heavy

in 1 64 3 C o f that when , , a ouncil eight were chosen from among the

the West Indies , and frequently visited the New England Colonies ; and notwithstanding the treatment he had received he often rendered good service to such residents o f the Massachusetts settlement as came 4 “ in his way . Thus Winthrop writes in 1 6 3 : Three mi n isters which “ were sent to Virginia were wrecked on Long Island ; Mr . Allerton , of “ New Haven , being there took great pains and care of them , and pro “ ” cured them a very good pinace and all things necessary .

And in a letter from one John Haynes to Governor Winthrop , it is “ stated , There is late news by a vessel that came to the D utch and

1 64 4 o n v In , he was wrecked at Scituate , his way from New Ha en

to the Colonies , and at this time we find the first mention of his third

O f n r wife . The date this marriage is not known o the surname and

re sidence Of his wife ; her first name was Johanna, and he is generally

thought to have married her at New Haven , but more probably she

came from Marblehead o r Salem . She appears to have been a woman

Of a most excellent character , and she outlived her husband many f years . At the time o this marriage Isaac Allerton must h ave been

nearly sixty years o f age and the union proved to be a childless o n e . About 1 64 6 Isaac Allerton became a permanent resident o f New

h e Haven , and at that place lived the remainder of his life , although

making occasional trips to N e w Amsterdam and Massachusetts . He “ C ” built himself a grand house on the reek , with Four Porches , on a “ ” home lot Of tw o acres . One of the famous spots in New Haven is

- the north west corner o f Union and Fair streets where the house stood . A tablet has been placed on the present building bearing this full

“ “ ” : — inscription Isaac Allerton , a passenger Of the Mayflower , lived

We find many mentions of Captain Isaac Allerton , as he is there ld O . called , in the records Of New Haven

The following account o f a little diffi culty which Mrs . Allerton

N O o f portrait Isaac Allerton has come down to us , but he is said to have been slightly above the average height , of a spare but muscular frame , with dark hair and beard , a clear complexion and strongly marked features , a good looking rather than a handsome man . In the great maj ority o f his descendants there can be noticed a great s im ilarit o f d y evelopment in the upper portion of the head and face , more especially noticeable in the forehead , eyes and nose , and there c an w w be no doubt that these physical marks , together ith certain ell

o f o ur defined traits character , have descended to us from common

. O f o n e ancestor He was superior to all his associates the Mayflow r,

o n e o r except possibly Winslow , and two others , in education , and superior to all of them in knowledge o f the world and familiarity with

business , and as his experience in these matters was so much greater , his mental horizon was far wider an d his view s more liberal and more

o f tolerant the opinions of oth ers . The only wonder is that he was

able to agree with them as lon g as he did . The services which he rendered to the Colony have been fully appreciated by a few careful historians only ; poetry and romance have combined to spread the

fame of Standish the soldier , or of Alden the clerk , wh ile the record

’ o f n f Allerton s work is buried in the dusty recesses of E glish o fices , but had there been no Standish amon g the Colonists there could have

been found others as competent to battle with the Indians , while it is hardly possible that any man among them could have accomplished

n o t t o o all that Isaac Allerton did in London , and it is much to say

that the very existence o f the Plymouth Colony depended for a time

upon the success o f h is negotiations there . F o r two ce n turies and a third the dust o f the Pilgrim leader has l m s umbered beneath the elms Of New Haven , but his emory is fresh

- to day and will always endure , not only in the hearts of his descend

m o f ants but in com mon with his heroic co panions the Mayflower , his name will be forever cherished by the e n tire people Of th at mighty

Samuel went to Erie . Women had burned down bridges , because

“ settled in Chicago , believing that Chicago , where the world turned

He commenced , in a small way , to buy and sell live stock . There m was no general market in Chicago , except for a short ti e during the

About this time there came a decided break in the Chicago market .

Congress passed the National Bank Act, issuing bonds to secure the circulation . This was a step in the right direction toward a National

National Banks . Mr . Allerton asked Mr . Aikens why he did not start “ a National Bank He replied , because he feared he could not get the stock taken . Mr. Allerton said , that he , with five other men,

to put the right man in the right place , irrespective of politics .

Although it has , so far, been found impossible to Obtain any

A careful study will convince the most skeptical that they are o n e and the same person . o t All authorities c ncede that Isaac Aller on , of the Mayflower , was
