GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE The Spring BoA Meeting was held in Tampa last Saturday and well attended by FSMD Officers and Colony Governors—lots of discussions were had and decisions made. We have a very busy Summer and Fall season planned— we will be visiting our new great-granddaughter in July in Tacoma, WA; attending the GBOA Congress Meeting in September in Plymouth, MA; and then returning to New England to attend the wedding of our youngest granddaughter, Erin in October in Maine. Elder Peggy Christie led the annual memorial service for the following deceased members: Lois Helen Crossley, Johnannes Leonardus Koet, Frederick Howard Phinney, Sr.; and Reginald Stuart Thompson. We were honored to have as our special guests and program speaker, FSMD Governor Kenneth Carter and his wife Kathleen. Governor Carter spoke on one of his Mayflower Passengers in a talk entitled“ Isaac Allerton, Colonial Entrepreneur, Businessman and Diplomat.” He placed Isaac Allerton into the broader history, of the theological and political conflicts of Reformation England and Europe. Allerton was probably born in London, but by 1609 was in Leiden with his wife and sister. By 1619 he was a citizen of Leiden and a fustian maker. In 1620, he was in Plymouth as a high status colonist with skills in other languages and an ability to negotiate. In 1626, in face of the declining relationship with and less financing from the merchant adventurers, Isaac Allerton went to England to raise more money for the colony and to buy out the investors. In the 1630’s he attempted to increase trade networks outside of Plymouth Colony with the Dutch and others; however, colony elders saw this as a threat. Isaac Allerton met difficulties when he lost ships and ventures. In 1635, Isaac Allerton left Plymouth Colony and in 1659, died in an epidemic in New Haven Colony. In keeping with Governor Carter’s talk on Isaac Allerton, Colony Governor Laura Brock also had on display a quilt she made with her Isaac Allerton family tree heritage. STEPHEN HOPKINS COLONY—VERO BEACH The Stephen Hopkins Colony met on Thursday, 9 February 2017 at the C.J. Cannon’s Restaurant at the Vero Beach Executive Airport at 12:00 noon. A great meal was prepared and about 50 persons were in attendance. The program was given by State Governor, Kenneth E. Carter who presented a talk on his Ancestor, Isaac Allerton. At left is Hopkins Colony Governor, Brian McWaters and State Governor, Kenneth E. Carter. This Colony is really coming along well and we look for great things from them in the near future. The Florida Pilgrim - 2017-2-May Page 3 JAMES CHILTON COLONY— THE VILLAGES The Meeting of the James Chilton Colony was held on Saturday, 1 April 2017 at the Del Webb Spruce Creek Picnic Gazebo in Summerfield with 60+ members and guests in attendance. Our Speaker was new Chilton member, Tom Chapin who spoke on “Exploring Elder Brewster’s Home in Scrooby, England”. A lovely picnic lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, cole slaw, cookies and beverages was enjoyed by all. Colony Governor, Marcia Dalkalitsis announced that she was resigning and moving to Austin, TX—she passed on the Colony Governor Medal & Gavel to incoming Gover- nor, James Roorbach, II— State Governor, Ken Carter thanked Marcia for her service to the Chilton Colony and the FSMD as a member of the BoA and welcomed Jim to the helm of the Chilton Ship and to the FSMD BoA. The Florida Pilgrim - 2017-2-May Page 4 Edward Doty Colony February 11, 2017 The Edward Doty colony members gathered at the Genealogy Library. Meeting there was most beneficial, because not only is a room provided but members have the opportunity, if they so wish, to stay and do further research. Someone is always looking to gain a little more knowledge roaming through the archives. At our February meeting no program was offered. Knowing that each year the second Saturday will be business, one wonders if anyone will show. It is a nice surprise to see people walk through the door. Being that Valentine’s Day is so close to the meeting date, it is customary to encourage everyone to wear red. Lemon curd mini tartlets and chocolate mint frosted chocolate brownies were served. After all, what’s Valentine’s without chocolate? Business was our main focus during this first meeting of the year. Discussions took place covering: finances, new regulations regarding papers being approved, selections of forthcoming programs and the biggest topic was regarding prospective officers for the coming year. The Florida Pilgrim - 2017-2-May Page 5 The Edward Doty Colony Pensacola, FL The Edward Doty Colony held a Finger Food Luncheon at the Genealogy Library in April 2017. The luncheon followed our business meeting. First, a program was delivered by Vice-Governor Barbara Boster entitled “Who was Edward Doty?” It was entertaining to hear about the colony’s namesake. He was quite the character and I’m sure everyone was surprised to find out one could be a boxer in colonial times, in addition to hearing a couple side notes about firsts: Edward Doty was in the first duel, and sadly, a woman related to him through marriage was the first woman hung for murdering her daughter. It left us knowing that from the beginning people have always been, just that – people. The slate of officers was presented and the election was held. The board will be installed at the closure of the November meeting. The new board will be: Governor, Donna Ortman; Vice-Governor, Barbara Boster; Secretary, Ellen Addison; Treasurer, Bunny Halligan; Elder, Barbara Page. Historian is yet to be filled. The meeting was adjourned so that everyone could enjoy the tables laden with chicken salad and pimiento cheese sandwiches, baked cookies, blondies, fruit salad, cheese tray, mince-meat mini tarts, cheese puffs, deviled eggs, veggie pizza bites, mini cheese and meat wraps, and cranberry-apple lemonade. And it was a feast of delectable foods. No one left hungry. The door prize was won by Helen Correll who took home a small Easter box filled with chocolate.
