High water was a major issue for the CTW team; the site of the program, the Belle Isle Boat House, was flooded for most of the summer. GPYNEF continues to work with CTW to seek a location that will remain high and dry as we all fight the high water problems.

GPYNEF AND CHALLENGE THE WIND

HIGH WATER CREATES CHALLENGES The high water levels in 2019 presented unique challenges to the Challenge the Wind program. The GPYNEF continues to work closely with the Challenge the Wind (CTW) program to The Belle Isle Boat House (formerly Detroit Boat provide sailing opportunities to inner-city youth Club), the current location of CTW, was flooded by developing facilities and programs. and parts of the facility were unusable. Due to this, This year GPYNEF donated two 420 sailboats, the program’s growth was restricted. The popularity of the program continues to grow, and CTW presently has a waiting list of 40 additional children who would like to join.

VOLUNTEERS TO THE RESCUE Over the years, many volunteers have stepped up to work with Challenge the Wind to give the program its best chance of success. This year, we would like to recognize two GPYNEF and GPYC partners that provided noteworthy assistance. We would like to give a special thanks to each of these supporters. E. G. Korneffel Co. E.G. Korneffel Co. donated equipment and time to remove damaged docks that were a safety hazard at the Belle Isle Boat House. These docks had been destroyed by time, ice, and neglect. They presented a significant safety hazard to the CTW youth who were operating in the area. The effort by the Korneffel team was greatly appreciated by the sailors and rowers. Tom Raguso of Sun Sport Marine The second partner was Tom Raguso from Sun Sport Marine. Earlier in the year, the CTW staff was having difficulty keeping their 20-year- old chase boat running. We asked Tom if he could assist with the boat’s Yamaha engine, and he went above and beyond. During the winter months, he repowered the boat with a new engine and controls then donated it to the CTW program. Tom’s work was crucial to the success of the summer program as the high water levels required constant use of the power boat.

A NEW LOOK AT CHARITABLE GIVING

The changes to the tax law in 2018 (Tax Cut and Jobs Act-TCJA), in addition to lowering tax rates, have required lots of rethinking about personal deductions, especially charitable gifts. The replacement for many taxpayers of large “itemized deductions” (mortgage interest, taxes, and charities, and miscellaneous deductions), by a larger “standard deduction” of $24,000-26,600, requires new mechanics for charitable gift planning. Now, more than ever, it matters just as much HOW and WHAT you give, as WHEN and HOW MUCH you give. GPYNEF, a 501(C)(3) foundation, qualifies for all types of charitable contribution deducations including income, estate and gift taxes.
