Southern California Yachting Association Attention One Design/ PHRF/Cruisers/RC Model Boaters/ Predicted Log and Dinghy Racers Enter the 89th Midwinter Regatta 2018 February 10 and 11 or February 17 and 18, 2018 The two-weekend format, stretching from Morro Bay to San Diego and points east, will again enable host yacht clubs to select the best fit for racers wishing to participate in this unique event. This yachting tradition is a chance to test your skills against the best skippers on the West Coast or provide an opportunity to experience the thrill of competitive racing for the first time. The SCYA Midwinter Regatta, the nation's largest sailing competition, offers 27 venues, attracts more than 600 competing boats, 100 classes and more than 2,500 sailors. Our Midwinter Committee has been working closely with SCYA, the regatta's commercial sponsors and participating host clubs to ensure everyone has a great time. Each hosting yacht club showcases what they have to offer the sailing community. The Southern California Yachting Association, now in its 96th year of service, continues to facilitate member club communications, sponsors a variety of boat safety seminars, club management training, legislative representation, honor awards and much more. (310) 560-3994 Southern California Yachting Association Dear SCYA Midwinter Regatta Participants: Welcome on being part of SCYA’s 89th Midwinter Regatta, which is the largest regatta in the nation encompassing 27 hosted venues participating in two weekends with over 600 competing boats and more than 2,500 sailors. This year’s Midwinter Regatta promises to be one of the best with the expected addition of invited classes, including one-design, PHRF, Cruisers, Multi-hulls, dinghies, model boats, predicted log and various sponsors, which will only enhance the boating and racing experience to all those involved. New for 2018 – Online Registration on SCYA’s website: For Midwinter 2018 we offer online registration at www.scyamidwinterregatta.org for all host club venues. Simply click on “2018 Regatta Information” which takes you to a list of the host club venues. Click on the venue of your choice, fill out the registration form and complete your entry using the online payment feature. Your selected host club will have access to your registration data. Check back with your host club via its site on scyamidwinterregatta.org for sailing instructions, all other race documents and results. For paper entries, please mail the Entry Form which follows to SCYA or directly to your host club along with your check made payable to “SCYA”. The 2018 Midwinter Regatta is being run once again on two different weekends, the first being the 10th and the 11th and the second will be the 17th and the 18th of February. This allows the various clubs to pick the best dates to increase participation in their invited classes, to add classes to their schedule and allow the best racers of different classes to participate in multiple races over the two weekends. This year race participation will be enhanced by the addition of our disabled sailors racing alongside able-bodied sailors in various races and in certain of our venues. Funds generated by this event help support SCYA in their continuing contributions to our racing community in the southwest corner of our great nation by publishing the annual Race Calendar & Yacht Club Directory, sponsoring seminars, presenting honor awards, funding of our Service Center which assists all our member yacht clubs and so much more. I look forward to meeting most of you as we embark on this journey to make this one of the best Midwinter Regattas in recent years. Glatman, 2018 SCYA Midwinter Regatta Chairperson [email protected]/ 818-425-8752 th 89 SCYA MIDWINTER REGATTA NOTICE OF RACE February 10 and 11, 2018 & February 17 and 18, 2018* 1.0 RULES The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing, 2017-2020 (“RRS”). 2.0 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 2.1 Each entrant must be a member of a yacht club or sailing association belonging to the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA), US SAILING, the Southern California Cruiser Association (SCCA), or the American Model Yacht Association (ACMYA) or a guest of the host venue. In select non-spinnaker classes, the Host Venue may waive this requirement and accept other entries. Contact the Host Venue for further information. 2.2 Participating classes are listed in this Notice and include handicap, one-design, model boats and predicted log. Classes not listed may apply to the SCYA Midwinter Chairman for assignment to a host club. Three entries are required to establish a class. All entrants must be current members of the fleet in which they race. Out of the area boats may obtain a guest handicap certificate from PHRF of Southern California by calling (562) 438-6712. 2.3 Boats competing in this regatta shall use the ratings applicable to the host yacht club’s venue where they race. 2.4 Entries and payments should, preferably, be submitted on-line at SCYA’s event site, www.scyamidwinterregatta.org by clicking on the “2018 Regatta Information” tab and then selecting your desired venue from the list displayed. Then, please fill out your registration form and pay on-line. Your registration information will be made available to your host club for race management purposes. Please check back periodically on www.scyamidwinterregatta.org under your host club’s listing for all further race documents and updates. You may also complete and mail the Entry Form with payment to: SCYA, 5855 Naples Plaza, Suite 211, Long Beach, CA 90803-5080 or deliver same directly to your host yacht club before the entry deadline specified by that club. Host model yacht clubs may use their own entry forms. 2.5 One-design classes are requested to have an official representative at each host club before or during registration to resolve any issue relating to that class. 2.6 Entry fees: LOA of the boat: <10 ft. 10 to 19.9 ft. 20-30 ft.     Journal of the Association of Yachting Historians www.yachtinghistorians.org 2019-2020 The Jeremy Lines Access to research sources At our last AGM, one of our members asked Half-Model Collection how can our Association help members find sources of yachting history publications, archives and records? Such assistance should be a key service to our members and therefore we are instigating access through a special link on the AYH website. Many of us will have started research in yacht club records and club libraries, which are often haphazard and incomplete. We have now started the process of listing significant yachting research resources with their locations, distinctive features, and comments on how accessible they are, and we invite our members to tell us about their Half-model of Peggy Bawn, G.L.     Cadet Dinghy “Viking” Appendix 2 THE CADET SQUADRON In the early 1930's, Cadet Members of the R.G.Y.C. competed in a conglomeration of small craft. Ern Armstrong recalls that when he joined the club in 1933, the cadet section was comprised of the 12 foot cadets, "Firey Cross", owned and sailed by John Boocock, on which Ern sailed for the last three races of the season and "Viking", owned by Tal and Jim Searle, "Tasma", a flat-bottomed ,low wooded hull approximately 14feet long, owned by the Club, "Teddy bear", a half-decked rather heavy boat owned by Geoff Wood, and "Westra", a semi-decked 12 foot cadet, owned by the McAllisters. At that time the boat storage shed was approximately 40 feet by 30 feet fronting the roadway outside the club opposite Transvaal Square, about in line with the eastern end of the present Junior Squadron clubhouse. In about 1935, two 14 foot boats were added to the fleet. These were "Mulluka", owned by Chick Fleet Snr., and sailed by Jim Ritchie and "NV", a 14footer with narrow beam and a high aspect mainsail built and skippered by Norm Wray. And two more 12 foot cadet dinghies were also added to the fleet, "Caress", built and skippered by Bob Curnow and "Dolphin ", owned and skippered by Wally Wiggs. About this time the Cadet section acquired half of the Sea Scout's shed owned by Mr. Ev Hurst, now the tender dinghy storage shed. This move avoided the long lift from the original shed on the roadway.

    THE INTERNATIONAL FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK www.sailfd.org 1 2 Preface and acknowledgements for the “FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK” by Alberto Barenghi, IFDCO President The Class Book is a basic and elegant instrument to show and testify the FD history, the Class life and all the people who have contributed to the development and the promotion of the “ultimate sailing dinghy”. Its contents show the development, charm and beauty of FD sailing; with a review of events, trophies, results and the role past champions . Included are the IFDCO Foundation Rules and its byelaws which describe how the structure of the Class operate . Moreover, 2002 was the 50th Anniversary of the FD birth: 50 years of technical deve- lopment, success and fame all over the world and of Class life is a particular event. This new edition of the Class Book is a good chance to celebrate the jubilee, to represent the FD evolution and the future prospects in the third millennium. The Class Book intends to charm and induce us to know and to be involved in the Class life. Please, let me assent to remember and to express my admiration for Conrad Gulcher: if we sail, love FD and enjoyed for more than 50 years, it is because Conrad conceived such a wonderful dinghy and realized his dream, launching FD in 1952. Conrad, looked to the future with an excellent far-sightedness, conceived a “high-perfor- mance dinghy”, which still represents a model of technologic development, fashionable 3 water-line, low minimum hull weight and performance . Conrad ‘s approach to a continuing development of FD, with regard to materials, fitting and rigging evolution, was basic for the FD success.

    DID YOU KNOW The late Ben Lexcen designer of the famous “winged keel” on “Australia II,” was an RQYS Member from 1961 to 1968. When skippered by John Bertrand in 1983, “Australia II” became the first non - American yacht to win the America’s Cup in its then 132 year history. Bill Kirby FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS/BEN LEXCEN/BOB MILLER In 1958, the Royal Queensland Yacht Club introduced the International Flying Dutchman Olympic Class two - man dinghy into its fleet. Commodore the late John H “Jock” Robinson announced in his Annual Report for the year that the striking of a levy to assist Australian Olympic Yachting at the 1964 Games at Naples had been approved unanimously. The 1961 – 1962 Australian Champions in the International Flying Dutchman Class were Squadron Members Craig Whitworth, skipper and Bob Miller, forward hand sailing in the “AS Huybers.” The boat was made available for Craig and Bob to sail via efforts of the late Past Commodore Alf Huybers, a well - known businessman of the time in Brisbane and proprietor of Queensland Pastoral Supplies. I was told recently by Bill Wright of Norman R Wright & Sons that Bob Miller was apprenticed as a Sailmaker to his Uncle, Norman J Wright, at the Florite sail loft run by George Manders and seamstress Mrs Lauman. Norman J Wright taught Bob Miller basic yacht design and they teamed up to design the first 3 Man 18 foot skiff “Taipan.” That was closely followed by the World Champion 18 Footer, “Venom” and I was also told by Bill the rig plan of “Taipan” and “Venom” closely followed that of a Flying Dutchman.

    2019 One Design Classes and Sailor Survey [email protected] One Design Classes and Sailor Survey One Design sailing is a critical and fundamental part of our sport. In late October 2019, US Sailing put together a survey for One Design class associations and sailors to see how we can better serve this important constituency. The survey was sent via email, as a link placed on our website and through other USSA Social media channels. The survey was sent to our US Sailing members, class associations and organizations, and made available to any constituent that noted One-Design sailing in their profile. Some interesting observations: • Answers are based on respondents’ perception of or actual experience with US Sailing. • 623 unique comments were received from survey respondents and grouped into “Response Types” for sorting purposes • When reviewing data, please note that “OTHER” Comments are as equally important as those called out in a specific area, like Insurance, Administration, etc. • The majority of respondents are currently or have been members of US Sailing for more than 5 years, and many sail in multiple One-Design classes • About 1/5 of the OD respondents serve(d) as an officer of their primary OD class; 80% were owner/drivers of their primary OD class; and more than 60% were members of their primary OD class association. • Respondents to the survey were most highly concentrated on the East and West coasts, followed by the Mid- West and Texas – though we did have representation from 42 states, plus Puerto Rico and Canada. • Most respondents were male.

McCarthy, Commodore www.lmsrf.org LMSRF's web page for the past ten years was the organization's second generation web site and had grown very long in the tooth. Chuck Goes, whom some of you know from Belmont Yacht Club or from his Race Committee work, volunteered to help LMSRF build a new web site. Chuck’s day job is web hosting and design, along with computer consulting, at his company, Digital Interplay (contact Chuck at [email protected] or at 773.743.9843 if you are in need of help for your own business). We chose the platform of Joomla!, as this web site software allows our volunteers to make changes anywhere, anytime, without needing anything more than an internet connection. Users don’t need any special software to make updates and changes. The goals of the new web site are simple, to make it easier to navigate (check), make it easier to maintain by assigning committee chairs the pages they are responsible for maintaining (check, check), add a bit of fun with links to Maritime Museums and Lighthouses (check), but most importantly to make it easier for you to get what you need (big check). Examples of this last one are that you will find applications for Grants-In-Aid and the Hall of Fame on the web site, along with the requirements of both programs. With over 60 pages of information, we hope you find it informative, helpful and will help your club and/or foster your own sailing.
