Message from the President, The Open University of Hong Kong I am pleased to welcome you all to the 4th Academia-Industry Exchange organized by the Institute of International Business and Governance (IIBG). IIBG was established by Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration (B&A) of The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) in 2016, with the support from Research Grants Council (RGC) of the Hong Kong SAR Government. Since 2014, we have received a total of nearly HK$87 million for carrying out research projects in different areas from the RGC. This year, the OUHK has received a funding of over HK$15 million from RGC for 17 research projects. The amount is the highest among 15 eligible self-financing institutions. The encouraging results reassure the university’s research capability and its commitment to the future development of Hong Kong. Professor Yuk-Shan Wong, SBS, BBS, JP The OUHK has established six research institutes including IIBG with the President support from the Hong Kong Government. These research institutes organize The Open University of Hong Kong regular research events including workshops and seminars that bring together international researchers and practitioners for exchanges of insights into the latest research directions and industrial practices. Over the past few years, we have delightfully witnessed a significant growth of research output made by our research community. We take pride in the university’s advancement in academic research capacity and capabilities. The theme of this year’s Symposium is ‘International Business, Innovation & Governance: Shaping the Futures of Smart Economy’. Digital technologies and smart city developments are changing many facets of our lives, with plenty of possible benefits as well as drawbacks. The COVID-19 pandemic has opened up new business opportunities and redefined the future of work. In these unprecedented times, this Symposium provides a platform for academics and practitioners worldwide to share new knowledge and experiences in emerging business innovations, sustainable solutions and best practices for our future economy. I am sure this Symposium will be a great success with your participation and contribution. Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank the Organising Committee for their work. Finally, I thank you all for participating in this Symposium and I wish you all have a great time. 2 IIBG 4th Academia-Industry Exchange Message from the Director, Institute of International Business and Governance On behalf of IIBG, I take great pleasure to welcome you to the 4th Academia- Industry Exchange. The Symposium provides opportunities to establish productive academic and industry collaborations. It is a great platform for multi- disciplinary group of scholars, researchers and industry experts to present and exchange breakthrough ideas relating to the theme. In response to the global pandemic, the annual event has switched to an online platform. The theme of the symposium is a particularly timely topic as innovation and digitalisation play a crucial role in adjusting to changes during the pandemic. This year, we are honored to have the presence of two eminent speakers at the event. They are Professor Chris Rowley from the Kellogg College, University of Oxford and Mr Peter Yan from Hong Kong Cyberport Management Professor Alan Au Company Limited. I am sure their presentations will be valuable and inspiring. Director Institute of International Apart from the keynote speeches, Ir Dr Samson Tai is going to explain how Business and Governance technologies can provide solutions for us during times of uncertainty, and relevant field experts and industry representatives are invited to share their ideas towards the topic of smart cities in the panel discussion. In addition, presenters from different continents and academic disciplines will bring along their diverse experience and knowledge in the competitive and poster presentations, which will certainly stimulate exciting and fruitful discussions. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the President of OUHK and our eighteen supporting organisations for their support and encouragement. I would also like to thank all members of the Organising Committee and colleagues for their professional inputs and diligent work in making this Symposium a success. IIBG 4th Academia-Industry Exchange 3 About Institute Funded by the Research Grants Council’s Institutional Development Scheme, of International IIBG was established by the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration of the OUHK in January 2016. The Institute has the following missions and Business and objectives: Governance Missions • To amplify institutional research strengths in the fields of international business, governance and ethics; • To broaden academics’ knowledge and international connections to stimulate new research ideas and possibilities; • To promote research culture; • To encourage collaborative research and development of clusters for cascading research knowledge and networks, thereby forming a research backbone for capacity building; • To enhance research output which makes scholarly contribution to the academic communities with a view to advising and influencing the development of local and international professional bodies, government organizations and business communities; and • To provide platforms for academics to gain insights and up-to-date information about the latest developments in the relevant business fields to benefit teaching. Objectives • To provide new research outputs, business analytic tools and data for studying the areas of innovation, sustainability, entrepreneurship and the future of work and living that can be transferred as inputs and foundation in further multidisciplinary research projects; • To investigate and understand how multinational corporations capitalize on big data in international business; • To examine the impact of China’s outward foreign direct investment on the dynamics of international business and its theoretical and practical implications; • To address the issues of governance in organizations under the influence of globalization; and • To explore how spiritual orientation, cultural values, and ethical developments affect the governance and management of organizations. Three research centres, namely the Centre for International Business (CIB), the Centre for Responsible Business (CRB) and the Centre for Entrepreneurship (CE), have been established under IIBG. The three centres are responsible for research in nine different fields: 1) Big Data Analytics; 2) Foreign Direct Investment; 3) Internationalization Strategies of Chinese Firms; 4) International Marketing; 5) Responsible Investment; 6) Spirituality and Ethics; 7) Innovation; 8) Sustainability; and 9) Entrepreneurship. The research focus and work-in-progress of the nine fields are as follows: 4 IIBG 4th Academia-Industry Exchange Centre for International Business (CIB) Big Data Analytics Team: Dr Matthew Yeung (OUHK) Professor Graham Kendall (The University of Nottingham) With the invaluable research experience of Professor Graham Kendall, a renowned expert in application of operations research and big data in sports, the team explores the impact of factors such as the incorporation of influential players, scheduling of fixtures and changes of managers on match outcomes. In addition, the team will also investigate the shock from relegation using intervention analysis. Foreign Direct Investment Team: Professor Alan Au (OUHK) Professor Mario Kafouros (The University of Manchester) Under the supervision of Professor Mario Kafouros, an internationally celebrated scholar in innovation and international business, the team concentrates on research related to foreign direct investment, international business and innovation. The team explores research opportunities related to foreign direct investment in the global business world, and generates research output that benefits academics, the public and business communities. International Marketing Team: Professor Alan Au (OUHK) Professor Tamer Cavusgil (Georgia State University) Under the guidance of Professor Tamer Cavusgil, an internationally renowned scholar in international business and marketing, the research team focuses on international consumer behavior. The team attempts to explore the issues related to emerging marks, buyer-seller relationships, and cross-border business. Internationalization Strategies of Chinese Firms Team: Dr Matthew Yeung (OUHK) Professor Chengqi Wang (The University of Nottingham) With the expertise from Professor Chengqi Wang, a world renowned scholar in strategy and international business, the team focuses on research related to government policies and internationalization strategies of Chinese firms. The team explores research opportunities linking up various government policies and regulations with different types of internationalization strategies of Chinese firms including start-ups in the Asia-Pacific
