CANDICE BREITZ SOLILOQUY TRILOGY (2000) (Three Short Films on DVD) Total viewing time of all 3 films: 29 minutes ∑ Soliloquy (Clint)(1971 - 2000) Length - 00:06:57:22 ∑ Soliloquy (Jack) (1987 - 2000) Length - 00:14:06:25 ∑ Soliloquy (Sharon) (1992 - 2000) Length - 00:07:11:03 In the presence of the super-star, we are suspended in an eternal present tense - all else seems flat and homogenous. As suggested by its title, the Soliloquy Trilogy is a series of three monologues. My interest was in seeking a formal language to express the dramatic compression of space and time that occurs in the presence of celebrity. Each of the three films is driven by the same impulse (the desire to distil auratic presence to the extent that it might begin to unravel and flatten even as it unfolds before our eyes) and the same editing logic (each takes a well-known Hollywood movie as its starting point, zooming in on a single protagonist who is then stalked and isolated (cut and paste) out of every scene in which s/he appears in the movie). Soliloquy (Sharon) (1992 - 2000) for example, is a tight edit of the psycho-sexual thriller Basic Instinct (1992). Basic Instinct is rigorously trimmed so that all footage is deleted except the moments in which Sharon Stone is speaking… or groaning… or giggling… or grunting. The new film thus isolates and chronologically strings together all of Sharon Stone’s verbal moments, in the process reducing the feature-length film to only slightly more than 7 minutes. A monochrome screen is dropped in to edit out those visual moments in which other characters are too prominent while Stone speaks. -

That same year, he had finalized a bitter divorce from his wife of four years, Natacha Rambova. Valentino had been madly in love with the gorgeous and very talented designer, yet they had been unable to make their marriage work. Since their first marriage in 1922, the public had been critical of Rambova, blaming her for any mistakes in Valentino's career or life. As Valentino laid on his deathbed in New York, Rambova was in Paris. The two exchanged telegrams to the very end, with both sides believing they would soon reunite and a reconciliation had taken place. Upon hearing the news of his death, Rambova was so distraught she locked herself in her room for three days. With many estate issues to fulfill, Valentino's manager George Ullman took the reigns. To help keep Valentino's name in the spotlight, Ullman wrote a book detailing his time with the gifted actor. Ullman and Rambova had never gotten along, fighting for control of Valentino's career. Feeling she had been unfairly portrayed not only by Ullman, but also by the press, Rambova decided to write her own book. First published in the UK in 1927, "Rudy: An Intimate Portrait by His Wife," presented Rambova's side of the story, providing many amusing stories and anecdotes about her time with Valentino. -

Erin Brockovich Dir: Steven Soderbergh, USA, 2000 A review by Matthew Nelson, University of Wisconsin- Madison, USA When a film opens with the title "based on a true story," a sinking feeling of gloom comes over me. Will this be yet another typical triumph over adversity, human-interest flick, cranked out by the Hollywood machine to force-feed an increasingly lazy mass audience interested only in star power and happy endings? The lack of original story lines and plot conventions has turned the American motion picture industry into a creator of shallow popular interest films bested in their absurdity and lack of depth only by made-for-TV movies. While it has been said that our greatest stories come from real life, the griminess of the modern world rarely fits into the tightly regulated limitations surrounding mainstream American screenwriting. Details that do not fit within the formula of a marketable "true story" film, which must attempt to appeal to a large audience base of diverse people, are edited out in favor of more pleasing elements, such as a love story, gripping court room confession, or death bed recovery. With this admittedly jaded viewpoint, I went into Erin Brockovich hoping for the best (a rather vacant, feel-good movie, forgotten before I had pulled out of the multi-plex parking garage), but expected far worse. To my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be neither. Director Steven Soderbergh (of Sex, Lies and Videotape fame) manages to pull off an amazingly interesting film, with snappy writing, fine casting, and plenty of that feel good energy, that does not fall into sugary sentimentalism. -

Cobra Essay by David Shepard Rudolph Valentino's first independent production, COBRA, was released less than a year prior to the actor's untimely death at age 31. It is an unusual and contradictory showcase for the actor who is remembered more than any other as the icon of irresistible sexuality in Hollywood silent film. Beleaguered by women in his native land, a promiscuous Italian Count, Rodrigo Torriani (Valentino) escapes to New York to work for an elegant antiques dealer specializing in Italian objects d’art. The ambitious young man cannot suppress the Don Giovanni within himself and he is soon embroiled in a new series of romantic entanglements with secretaries, husband hunters and extortionists. But when his best friend's new wife captures suave Torriani in her Cobra-like gaze, he reforms just in time to avoid disgrace and even death-by-fire. COBRA was made at a time when every element of the young star's professional life was controlled by his wife, Natacha Rambova. Imagining that Valentino would out-do Douglas Fairbanks in films notable for scenes of pageantry, athleticism, and derring-do, she wrote for Rudy a treatment for an enormous spectacle of medieval Spain to be called The Hooded Falcon. With proposed co-star Nita Naldi, the Valentinos traveled to that country where they spent more than one hundred thousand dollars of producer J.D. Williams’ money on Spanish antiques and props. Rambova committed for the services of other actors. Joseph Henabery, who endured Rambova’s interference with his direction of A Sainted Devil, was engaged for the same task. -

On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as an Interior Landmark of the Winter Garden Theater, first floor interior consisting of the outer lobby, the inner lobby, the auditorium, the stage, the staircases leading from the first floor to the ba 1 cony floor and all connecting entrance areas; the ba 1 cony floor interior consisting of the balcony, the upper part of the auditorium and ceiling, the upper part of the stage house; and the fixtures and interior components of these spaces, including but not limited to, wall, ceiling, and floor surfaces, doors, stair railings and attached decorative elements; and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (I tern No. 83). The hearing was continued to October 19, 198 2. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law.
