  • John Doe's Manifesto Income Inequality Is One of the Defining
John Doe's Manifesto Income inequality is one of the defining issues of our time. It affects all of us, the world over. The debate over its sudden acceleration has raged for years, with politicians, academics and activists alike helpless to stop its steady growth despite countless speeches, statistical analyses, a few meagre protests, and the occasional documentary. Still, questions remain: why? And why now? The Panama Papers provide a compelling answer to these questions: massive, pervasive corruption. And it’s not a coincidence that the answer comes from a law firm. More than just a cog in the machine of “wealth management,” Mossack Fonseca used its influence to write and bend laws worldwide to favour the interests of criminals over a period of decades. In the case of the island of Niue, the firm essentially ran a tax haven from start to finish. Ramón Fonseca and Jürgen Mossack would have us believe that their firm’s shell companies, sometimes called “special purpose vehicles,” are just like cars. But used car salesmen don’t write laws. And the only “special purpose” of the vehicles they produced was too often fraud, on a grand scale. Shell companies are often associated with the crime of tax evasion, but the Panama Papers show beyond a shadow of a doubt that although shell companies are not illegal by definition, they are used to carry out a wide array of serious crimes that go beyond evading taxes. I decided to expose Mossack Fonseca because I thought its founders, employees and clients should have to answer for their roles in these crimes, only some of which have come to light thus far.

  • Following the Money: Lessons from the Panama Papers Part 1
ARTICLE 3.4 - TRAUTMAN (DO NOT DELETE) 5/14/2017 6:57 AM Following the Money: Lessons from the Panama Papers Part 1: Tip of the Iceberg Lawrence J. Trautman* ABSTRACT Widely known as the “Panama Papers,” the world’s largest whistleblower case to date consists of 11.5 million documents and involves a year-long effort by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists to expose a global pattern of crime and corruption where millions of documents capture heads of state, criminals, and celebrities using secret hideaways in tax havens. Involving the scrutiny of over 400 journalists worldwide, these documents reveal the offshore holdings of at least hundreds of politicians and public officials in over 200 countries. Since these disclosures became public, national security implications already include abrupt regime change and probable future political instability. It appears likely that important revelations obtained from these data will continue to be forthcoming for years to come. Presented here is Part 1 of what may ultimately constitute numerous- installment coverage of this important inquiry into the illicit wealth derived from bribery, corruption, and tax evasion. CANDICE BREITZ SOLILOQUY TRILOGY (2000) (Three Short Films on DVD) Total viewing time of all 3 films: 29 minutes ∑ Soliloquy (Clint)(1971 - 2000) Length - 00:06:57:22 ∑ Soliloquy (Jack) (1987 - 2000) Length - 00:14:06:25 ∑ Soliloquy (Sharon) (1992 - 2000) Length - 00:07:11:03 In the presence of the super-star, we are suspended in an eternal present tense - all else seems flat and homogenous. As suggested by its title, the Soliloquy Trilogy is a series of three monologues. My interest was in seeking a formal language to express the dramatic compression of space and time that occurs in the presence of celebrity. Each of the three films is driven by the same impulse (the desire to distil auratic presence to the extent that it might begin to unravel and flatten even as it unfolds before our eyes) and the same editing logic (each takes a well-known Hollywood movie as its starting point, zooming in on a single protagonist who is then stalked and isolated (cut and paste) out of every scene in which s/he appears in the movie). Soliloquy (Sharon) (1992 - 2000) for example, is a tight edit of the psycho-sexual thriller Basic Instinct (1992). Basic Instinct is rigorously trimmed so that all footage is deleted except the moments in which Sharon Stone is speaking… or groaning… or giggling… or grunting. The new film thus isolates and chronologically strings together all of Sharon Stone’s verbal moments, in the process reducing the feature-length film to only slightly more than 7 minutes. A monochrome screen is dropped in to edit out those visual moments in which other characters are too prominent while Stone speaks.

  • Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich Dir: Steven Soderbergh, USA, 2000 A review by Matthew Nelson, University of Wisconsin- Madison, USA When a film opens with the title "based on a true story," a sinking feeling of gloom comes over me. Will this be yet another typical triumph over adversity, human-interest flick, cranked out by the Hollywood machine to force-feed an increasingly lazy mass audience interested only in star power and happy endings? The lack of original story lines and plot conventions has turned the American motion picture industry into a creator of shallow popular interest films bested in their absurdity and lack of depth only by made-for-TV movies. While it has been said that our greatest stories come from real life, the griminess of the modern world rarely fits into the tightly regulated limitations surrounding mainstream American screenwriting. Details that do not fit within the formula of a marketable "true story" film, which must attempt to appeal to a large audience base of diverse people, are edited out in favor of more pleasing elements, such as a love story, gripping court room confession, or death bed recovery. With this admittedly jaded viewpoint, I went into Erin Brockovich hoping for the best (a rather vacant, feel-good movie, forgotten before I had pulled out of the multi-plex parking garage), but expected far worse. To my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be neither. Director Steven Soderbergh (of Sex, Lies and Videotape fame) manages to pull off an amazingly interesting film, with snappy writing, fine casting, and plenty of that feel good energy, that does not fall into sugary sentimentalism.

Her unique relationship with the models and her vision of the strength and fragility in each one of them, led her to shoot some of the most famous women in the world, such as Madonna, Kate Moss, Sharon Stone, Charlotte Rampling, Marianne Faithfull, Monica Bellucci, Kylie Minogue and many others. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums all around the world, including Europe, Japan, Australia and the United States and some of her most iconic photographs remain in important international private collections and public institutions.

  • FAQ Panama Papers by Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer
FAQ Panama Papers By Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer Investigative work - Could you explain how the Panama Papers information was obtained? Could you explain whether such information is in itself complete or if some information may have been either not obtained/ left out of the leak/ not exposed? In other words, how representative is the data that you refer to in your publications for the “offshore world” in general? Süddeutsche Zeitung obtained the 2,6 terabyte of Panama-Papers-information from an anonymous source calling itself “John Doe”. We do not know which percentage of the internal information of the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca this is. We guess it displays pretty much of their business. Süddeutsche Zeitung, ICIJ and its partners with whose Süddeutsche Zeitung shared the data have reported and are still reporting on cases of public interest. As this is such a big amount of data investigations take time. We are pretty sure that there will still be revelations that are at least in parts based on the Panama-Papers-data. The Panama Papers showed that there is a whole parallel world offshore in which the rich and powerful enjoy the freedom to avoid not just taxes but all kinds of laws they find inconvenient. Let’s face the facts: Hiding the real ownership of companies and thus also bank accounts is not an unique approach of Mossack Fonseca and its clients – it is one of the main reasons of individuals going offshore (with Mossack Fonseca’s help or the help of other providers). - Upon reception of the data, how did you organise your research? How did you select cases to focus on? Every member of the international team that worked (coordinated by the ICIJ) on the Panama Papers had access to the whole dataset.

  • I Published Panama Papers in Public Interest, Says Editor Malaysiakini.Com Apr 11 Th , 2016 Reuters
I published Panama Papers in public interest, says editor MalaysiaKini.com Apr 11 th , 2016 Reuters The editor of the German newspaper that broke the Panama Papers story said today he did not know exactly where his team's source got the information but defended his decision to publish on the basis of the public interest. Wolfgang Krach, co-editor-in-chief of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, said a source who introduced themselves as "John Doe" contacted the paper a year ago and with an offer of encrypted internal documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. Sueddeutsche, realising the sheer number of documents to be scrutinised, began working with a consortium of other media organisations before publishing the Panama Papers story that has shone a light on the financial schemes of the world's elite. "We don't know how this source came upon the information," Krach told Reuters by telephone from his office in Munich. "Mossack Fonseca say themselves 'we were hacked' - I don't know if that is the case. I can't confirm that." The head of Mossack Fonseca has denied any wrongdoing, and said his firm has fallen victim to "an international campaign against privacy". Suddeutsche Zeitung has said it received a cache of 11.5 million leaked documents from the law firm's database. The documents cover a period of over almost 40 years, from 1977 until last December, and purport to show that some companies domiciled in tax havens were being used for suspected money laundering, arms and drug deals and tax evasion. Decisive question "We don't know if this source got access lawfully or unlawfully, we just don't know," Krach said, but he said the provenance of the information was less important than the credibility of the documents and the public interest.
