Caitlin McCoy: Hello and welcome to another episode of CleanLaw, our podcast at the Environmental and Energy Law Program at Harvard Law School. This is Caitlin McCoy and I'm a staff attorney at the program. Today, I have the incredible privilege of speaking with Erin Brockovich, who hardly needs an introduction since her name has become synonymous with efforts to clean up contaminated water supplies hold polluters accountable and establish common sense protections for water quality. Welcome Erin. We're honored to have you as a guest on the podcast. Erin Brockovich: Hi. It's nice to be here today. Thanks for the invite and I'm just as honored to be here. Caitlin: That's really flattering. Thank you. You've written a new book that I just finished reading. It's called Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do about It. First of all, congratulations on a fantastic book. Erin: Thank you. I hope you enjoyed it. Caitlin: I really did. When I first got it, I thought wow this is pretty long, but it's worth every page because it's one of the best explainers on water quality that I've read. You break down the laws, the standards, major water quality issues facing the country and throughout the entire book, you're weaving in really moving stories of people who decide to take a stand for clean water in their communities and beyond. -

Joy Feeney Topics in Political Economy Professor David Ruccio December 17, 2008 The Economic Cost of Prevention Modern economic theory seems to disregard many practices necessary for the implementation of such theory. The 2000 hit movie Erin Brockovich tells the story of the missing pieces of economic theory throughout the battle of the underdog. The movie itself begs the question what is the truth? Truths are hard to come by and with a malfunctioning economic system, even more of a challenge. Brockovich depicts two sides of the economic argument, each showing and disproving economic practices left in and out of the current system. Brockovich utilizes the juxtaposition of the good-guy-bad-guy story in order to shed light on themes of corporate greed, virtuous values, and the strength of numbers in unity. Throughout the film, these themes are tried and tested, creating an alternative economic story to the current economic perspective thrust upon the film and society. Based on the true story of Erin Brockovich-Ellis, the film targets utility bigwig Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) based in San Francisco, California for lying to residents of Hinckley California about unhealthy amounts of hexavalent chromium in groundwater. The chromium was used to prevent corrosion in water towers on the Hinckley campus of PG&E since the 1950s. The chromium-laced wastewater was then released to unlined retention ponds that infiltrated the ground water of residents in the Hinckley area. This hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium 6, is known to cause medical problems such as uterine cancer, spinal deterioration, and Hodgkin’s disease. -

5.3 Post-Cinematic Atavism BY RICHARD GRUSIN In June 2002, for a plenary lecture in Montreal at the biennial Domitor conference on early cinema, I took the occasion of the much-hyped digital screening of Star Wars: Episode II–Attack of the Clones (George Lucas, 2002) to argue that in entering the 21st century we found ourselves in the “late age of early cinema,” the more than century-long historical coupling of cinema with the sociotechnical apparatus of publicly projected celluloid film (“Remediation”). Two years later, in a lecture at a conference in Exeter on Multimedia Histories, I developed this argument in terms of what I called a “cinema of interactions,” arguing that cinema in the age of digital remediation could no longer be identified with its theatrical projection but must be understood in terms of its distribution across a network of other digitally-mediated formats like DVDs, websites, games, and so forth—an early call for something like what now goes under the name of “platform studies” (“DVDs”). In his recent book on “post-cinematic affect” Steven Shaviro has picked up on this argument in elaborating his own extremely powerful reading of the emergence of a post-cinematic aesthetic (70). I want to return the favor here to take up what I would characterize as a kind of “post-cinematic atavism” that has been emerging in the early 21st century as a counterpart to the aesthetic of post-cinematic affectivity that Shaviro so persuasively details. Sometimes considered under the name of “slow cinema” or “the new silent cinema” (or, as | 1 5.3 Post-Cinematic Atavism Selmin Kara puts it, “primordigital cinema”), post-cinematic atavism is not limited to art- house or independent films. -

Danny Elfman has also said that it will appear in the forthcoming “Justice League” film. When word was released in September 2017 that Warner Home Video announced plans to release a new two-disc Blu-ray of “Superman” as part of the Warner Archive Collection, fans around the world rejoiced with excitement at the news that the 188-minute extended version of the film - a slightly shorter version of which was first broadcast on ABC-TV on February 7 & 8, 1982 - would be part of the release. -

For Release: On Approval Motion Picture Sound Editors to Honor George Miller with Filmmaker Award 68th MPSE Golden Reel Awards to be held as a global, virtual event on April 16th Studio City, California – February 10, 2021 – The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) will honor Academy Award-winner George Miller with its annual Filmmaker Award. The Australian writer, director and producer is responsible for some of the most successful and beloved films of recent decades including Mad Max, Mad Max 2: Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Mad Max: Fury Road. In 2007, he won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for the smash hit Happy Feet. He also earned Oscar nominations for Babe and Lorenzo’s Oil. Miller will be presented with the MPSE FilmmaKer Award at the 68th MPSE Golden Reel Awards, set for April 16th as an international virtual event. Miller is being honored for a career noteworthy for its incredibly broad scope and consistent excellence. “George Miller redefined the action genre through his Mad Max films, and he has been just as successful in bringing us such wonderfully different films as The Witches of Eastwick, Lorenzo’s Oil, Babe and Happy Feet,” said MPSE President MarK Lanza. “He represents the art of filmmaking at its best. We are proud to present him with MPSE’s highest honor.” Miller called the award “a lovely thing,” adding, “It’s a big pat on the back. I was originally drawn to film through the visual sense, but I learned to recognize sound, emphatically, as integral to the apprehension of the story. -

'The Mystery Cruise' Cast Bios Gail O'grady

During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister. -
