According to experts, 70% of people struggle with the Impostor Syndrome. They feel they don’t know themselves—like they’re phonies and frauds. They describe their fears with phrases like: • “I’m a _______________. • “I’m going to be found out.” • “They’ made a __________ and I shouldn’t be here.” Put another way, people who suffer from this syndrome believe a discrepancy exists between how they see themselves and how others see them. Although other people might see them as successful, brilliant, and balanced on the outside, they hardly feel this way on the inside. © 2015 Redeem the Day 3 Fixating on this gap, they feel like ____________. Believing it’s only a matter of time until their cover is blown and the world finds out what they already know to be true–they’re imposters. Do you ever feel like you’re an _______________? Actors aren’t immune either. In an article called “Behind the Mask” published in the Toronto Star, celebrities like Mike Myers, Kate Winslet, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jodie Foster admitted feeling like imposters, like they’re only a breath away from being found out by the “talent police.” In an interview with Mike Wallace of 60 minutes, Foster explained that upon notification of winning the Academy Award for best actress she thought it was a fluke. “The same way [I did] when I walked on the campus at Yale. I thought everybody would find out, and they'd take the Oscar back. They'd come to my house, knocking on the door, “Excuse me, we meant to give that to someone else. That was going to Meryl Streep.’” Jodie spent nearly her entire life in the spotlight. And she’s © 2015 Redeem the Day 4 one of the most respected and highest-paid actresses working today. Yet she has trouble wearing her own success because of her struggle with inadequacy. How to bridge the gap: © 2015 Redeem the Day 5 I’ve discovered we’ll never outperform our own self-image. If you see yourself as a 72 on a 100-point scale, the world isn’t going to raise the value. ___________ and self-image have a bunch in common. If you’re set at 72 internally, you’ll never reach 100 externally. Even if people around you compliment you or give you a raise, your results will always drop back to 72—the exact setting of your self- image. © 2015 Redeem the Day 6 The 2 "mindfields" that blow up your potential. After working with thousands and thousands of people, I’ve discovered all self-limiting beliefs center on two core lies: 1. I am _____________________ (lack of __________________). 2. I don’t have __________________ (lack of ______________________). © 2015 Redeem the Day 7 Obviously, operating with this story set on repeat inside your headspace keeps your self-image at an incredibly low set-point. Check out the seven most common manifestations: __________________ ____________________ ____________________ 1. Physically Beauty I hide in fear. 2. Mentally Education I hide in _____. 3. Spiritually Discipline I hide in fear. 4. E ___________ Experience I hide in fear. 5. Financially Money I hide in _____. 6. Intellectually B ____________. I hide in fear. 7. Relationally Friends I hide in fear. How to overcome them: 1. Remember your Position A – ________________________________ B — _______________________________ C— _______________________________ © 2015 Redeem the Day 8 2. • Smoothing the Wrinkles Hollywood, “Successful Aging” and the New Visibility of Older Female Stars Josephine Dolan
Template: Royal A, Font: , Date: 07/09/2013; 3B2 version: 9.1.406/W Unicode (May 24 2007) (APS_OT) Dir: //integrafs1/kcg/2-Pagination/TandF/GEN_RAPS/ApplicationFiles/9780415527699.3d 31 Smoothing the wrinkles Hollywood, “successful aging” and the new visibility of older female stars Josephine Dolan For decades, feminist scholarship has consistently critiqued the patriarchal underpinnings of Hollywood’s relationship with women, in terms of both its industrial practices and its representational systems. During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister.

  • Production Notes
A Film by John Madden Production Notes Synopsis Even the best secret agents carry a debt from a past mission. Rachel Singer must now face up to hers… Filmed on location in Tel Aviv, the U.K., and Budapest, the espionage thriller The Debt is directed by Academy Award nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). The screenplay, by Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, is adapted from the 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov [The Debt]. At the 2011 Beaune International Thriller Film Festival, The Debt was honoured with the Special Police [Jury] Prize. The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and Stephan (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds of the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain [The Tree of Life, The Help], Marton Csokas [The Lord of the Rings, Dream House], and Sam Worthington [Avatar, Clash of the Titans]) tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. While Rachel found herself grappling with romantic feelings during the mission, the net around Vogel was tightened by using her as bait. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations that compel Rachel to take matters into her own hands.

  • Jodie Foster a Hollywood Prodigy
Presents JODIE FOSTER A HOLLYWOOD PRODIGY A 52’ documentary Written by Yal Sadat and directed by Camille Juza Produced by HAUT ET COURT TV and PETIT DRAGON PROVISIONAL DELIVERY: SEPTEMBER 2020 1 PITCH It’s hard to imagine a more “Hollywood” tale than that of Jodie Foster. She was practically born on a movie set. Pushed by a mother who wanted to make her a star, she comes from a world of stereotypes. And yet she is a very unusual figure in this industry. She is an intellectual who speaks French and is a confirmed Francophile. She plays complex characters that have nothing to do with the temptresses loved by American cinema. At first, she was that Lolita who fascinated the crowds and appealed to every gaze – even those of predators. But her status as this precocious young beauty almost cost her her career, before she decided to take matters into her own hands and become the most powerful actress and female director in Hollywood. How did the former child star, discovered in Disney TV movies and reinvented as a 12-year-old prostitute in Taxi Driver, manage to conquer a powerful, patriarchal industry that probably never really understood her? Too radical for the Hollywood oligarchy but too mainstream for the militant groups that reproached her for hiding her homosexuality and maintaining ties with Mel Gibson and Roman Polanski, Jodie Foster is problematic. She lived out her feminism as a lonesome cowgirl, alone against the world, settling for films that got her voice heard. It’s as if she was jealously guarding a secret.

  • Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich Dir: Steven Soderbergh, USA, 2000 A review by Matthew Nelson, University of Wisconsin- Madison, USA When a film opens with the title "based on a true story," a sinking feeling of gloom comes over me. Will this be yet another typical triumph over adversity, human-interest flick, cranked out by the Hollywood machine to force-feed an increasingly lazy mass audience interested only in star power and happy endings? The lack of original story lines and plot conventions has turned the American motion picture industry into a creator of shallow popular interest films bested in their absurdity and lack of depth only by made-for-TV movies. While it has been said that our greatest stories come from real life, the griminess of the modern world rarely fits into the tightly regulated limitations surrounding mainstream American screenwriting. Details that do not fit within the formula of a marketable "true story" film, which must attempt to appeal to a large audience base of diverse people, are edited out in favor of more pleasing elements, such as a love story, gripping court room confession, or death bed recovery. With this admittedly jaded viewpoint, I went into Erin Brockovich hoping for the best (a rather vacant, feel-good movie, forgotten before I had pulled out of the multi-plex parking garage), but expected far worse. To my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be neither. Director Steven Soderbergh (of Sex, Lies and Videotape fame) manages to pull off an amazingly interesting film, with snappy writing, fine casting, and plenty of that feel good energy, that does not fall into sugary sentimentalism.

  • Sixth Sense, the Genre: Drama Year: 1999 Rating: PG‐13 Actors: Bruce
Sixth Sense, The Genre: Drama Year: 1999 Rating: PG‐13 Actors: Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette Topics: Psychopathology, Treatment Bruce Willis as a child psychologist whose 6‐year‐old patient claims to see the spirits of dead people around him. Good film; nice plot twist. Also interesting brief portrayal of Munchausen’s by Proxy. Willis is a much more ethical psychologist in this film than in the horrible Color of Night. On Golden Pond Genre: Drama/Comedy Year: 1981 Rating: PG Actors: Katherine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda Topics: Neuropsychology, Marital/Family Dynamics Academy Award winner for Best Actor and Best Actress. Beautiful story of enduring love in an elderly couple, the husband’s suffering from the early stages of dementia, and its effect on family members. Acting doesn’t get much better than this. I Am Sam Genre: Drama Year: 2001 Rating: PG‐13 Actors: Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dakota Fanning Topics: Psychopathology, Neuropsychology, Forensic, Marital/Family Dynamics, Social Sean Penn portrays a man with mental retardation fighting for custody of his 7‐year‐old child. Sam’s group of friends are entertaining – two are truly developmentally disabled – his close neighbor is agoraphobic. His lawyer is the stereotypical overworked yuppie professional woman, estranged from her family. The film is a classic tearjerker. Despite significant research for the film (watch the supplemental documentary), how realistic were the events? Did he take her to a pediatrician? Did the pediatrician have any concerns about his care? Was that a realistic portrayal of cross‐examination of an expert witness? Could Sam really have afforded the apartment at the end in Los Angeles, making somewhere around $8/hour? What really was in the best interest of the child? Was the opposing attorney all that wrong? Many things to consider.
