That same year, he had finalized a bitter divorce from his wife of four years, Natacha Rambova. Valentino had been madly in love with the gorgeous and very talented designer, yet they had been unable to make their marriage work. Since their first marriage in 1922, the public had been critical of Rambova, blaming her for any mistakes in Valentino's career or life. As Valentino laid on his deathbed in New York, Rambova was in Paris. The two exchanged telegrams to the very end, with both sides believing they would soon reunite and a reconciliation had taken place. Upon hearing the news of his death, Rambova was so distraught she locked herself in her room for three days. With many estate issues to fulfill, Valentino's manager George Ullman took the reigns. To help keep Valentino's name in the spotlight, Ullman wrote a book detailing his time with the gifted actor. Ullman and Rambova had never gotten along, fighting for control of Valentino's career. Feeling she had been unfairly portrayed not only by Ullman, but also by the press, Rambova decided to write her own book. First published in the UK in 1927, "Rudy: An Intimate Portrait by His Wife," presented Rambova's side of the story, providing many amusing stories and anecdotes about her time with Valentino. Both Valentino and Rambova had been firm believers in the practice of Spiritualism. Rambova decided to utilize her beliefs for this book, adding a section titled "Revelations," consisting of things supposedly told to her by Valentino's soul, through seances. Rambova felt the need to publish these 'messages', believing these were things his soul wished to communicate with the world. However things soon got out of hand, with boisterous fans and attention seekers bombarding the legacy of Rudolph Valentino with their own claims. Rambova would remain firm in her beliefs, eventually becoming a renowned Egyptologist. After the publication of this book, she never spoke of her time with Valentino again. "Rudolph Valentino: An Intimate Portrait by his wife" is proudly reprinted by The Rudolph Valentino Society for the first time in over 80 years, under a new title, "Rudolph Valentino: A Wife's Memories of an Icon." In addition to the original text there is a new section containing biographies, filmographies, bibliographies, notes, and new forwards. This section also contains groundbreaking biographies on screenwriter and film executive June Mathis; as well as silent film vamp Nita Naldi. 70% of proceeds from this book benefit The Rudolph Valentino Society and Film Festival. • Cobra Essay by David Shepard
Cobra Essay by David Shepard Rudolph Valentino's first independent production, COBRA, was released less than a year prior to the actor's untimely death at age 31. It is an unusual and contradictory showcase for the actor who is remembered more than any other as the icon of irresistible sexuality in Hollywood silent film. Beleaguered by women in his native land, a promiscuous Italian Count, Rodrigo Torriani (Valentino) escapes to New York to work for an elegant antiques dealer specializing in Italian objects d’art. The ambitious young man cannot suppress the Don Giovanni within himself and he is soon embroiled in a new series of romantic entanglements with secretaries, husband hunters and extortionists. But when his best friend's new wife captures suave Torriani in her Cobra-like gaze, he reforms just in time to avoid disgrace and even death-by-fire. COBRA was made at a time when every element of the young star's professional life was controlled by his wife, Natacha Rambova. Imagining that Valentino would out-do Douglas Fairbanks in films notable for scenes of pageantry, athleticism, and derring-do, she wrote for Rudy a treatment for an enormous spectacle of medieval Spain to be called The Hooded Falcon. With proposed co-star Nita Naldi, the Valentinos traveled to that country where they spent more than one hundred thousand dollars of producer J.D. Williams’ money on Spanish antiques and props. Rambova committed for the services of other actors. Joseph Henabery, who endured Rambova’s interference with his direction of A Sainted Devil, was engaged for the same task.

  • 1 Philip Leers Behind the Great Man
Philip Leers Behind the Great Man Female Screenwriters and Collaborative Authorship in Early Hollywood The predominance of the auteur theory in cinema studies has been a double-edged sword, each benefit attended by a disadvantage. While it mitigated the primacy of the Hollywood system, it posited in its place the equally problematic figure of the director as the sole source of meaning-making in filmmaking. While it has brought to light a worthy list of previously unappreciated films and directors, it has also been justly criticized for reinforcing the centrality of white, male directors, and exacerbating the marginalization of other voices. And while it has provided an invaluable identificatory and analytic framework for film theorists, it has also fostered an essentialist, and often ahistorical, conception of film authorship. The cult of the male director, for instance, has obscured the remarkable contributions of female screenwriters to the early cinema. Throughout the silent era, and into the thirties, a majority of the screen’s foremost scenarists were women, with luminaries like Alice Guy Blache, Anita Loos, Elinor Glyn, Lois Weber, Francis Marion, Beulah Marie Dix, June Mathis, Jeanie MacPherson, Marion Fairfax, and Jane Murfin achieving a considerable measure of influence within the industry and celebrity without. These screenwriters constituted a network of powerful women who outnumbered their male counterparts ten to one, a ratio that was perhaps only possible in the infancy of the cinema, when filmmaking practice had not yet been consolidated under the patriarchal hierarchy of the Hollywood system. Certainly, the masculinist slant of Hollywood’s “Golden Age” and its subsequent usurping of the public interest served to efface the impact of these women on the film industry, but their prominence at a time when the narrative language of the cinema was taking shape cannot be ignored.

Links & Letters 6, 1999 43-59 North American desire for the Spanish Other: Three film versions of Blasco Ibáñez's Blood and Sand Sharon Cumberland Seattle University, USA September 1998 Abstract: There are three film versions of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's taurine novel Sangre y arena (1908). All are entitled Blood and Sand and feature male and female actors who epitomise the erotic possibilities of the North American fascination with Spanish stereotypes: Rudolph Valentino in 1922, Tyrone Power and Rita Hayworth in 1941, and Sharon Stone in 1989. By comparing the three film versions of Blood and Sand to Sangre y arena, it becomes clear that the North American appropriation of Spanish stereotypes displaces Blasco Ibáñez's theme of class conflict onto a safely diffused locus of erotic desire. Included are discussions of stereotypes in North American literary and film culture, Hollywood and North American audiences, and the españolada tradition compared to other North American genres. Key words: Blasco Ibáñez; Blood and Sand; Sangre y arena; Bullfighting; Culture Criti- cism; Españolada; Spanish Stereotypes. Although styles in popular culture come and go, North American audiences have never lost their desire for artistic representations of the exotic Spanish Other. «Desire» in this sense, is composed of both an erotic longing pro- jected into a safe, fantasy world, and a need for an exotic stereotype against which to read one's own identity. The romantic hero with flashing eyes and a taste for danger, whether manifested as a Conquistador, gypsy, or «Latin Lover», always seems to return to the popular imagination. For instance, as these lines are being written (summer, 1998) one of the top films showing in North America is The Mask of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas, a Spanish actor who has developed a cross-over career in Hollywood by capitalising on the latent desire of North American audiences for a new embodiment of this familiar stereotype.

Praise for Glamour ‘In her relish for brassy blondes, gutsy flamboyance and tinsel vulgarity, Dyhouse writes like a woman who knows her way around the lipstick counter and the flea market. She shows how a parade in the trappings of glamour expressed aspiration and assertion at odds with mousy, unobtrusive conformity. Glamour was a cynical business, but also a shriek of camp defiance. All fur coat and no knickers. Dyhouse has whipped the stopper from a vintage bottle of Evening in Paris and conjured a vanished world – cheap, a little tarty, but impossible to forget.’ Amanda Vickery, author of Behind Closed Doors ‘In Glamour: Women, History, Feminism, Carol Dyhouse has written a study of the conception of glamour in the twentieth century that is sprightly, provocative, and penetrating. She adds greatly to our understanding of a phenomenon that has been central to women’s attitudes toward themselves … This work will be interesting to both scholars and general readers alike.’ Lois Banner, author of American Beauty ‘In her survey of changing ideas about “glamour” throughout the twentieth century and beyond, Carol Dyhouse has succeeded in fashioning scholarly empirical research into a clear, engaging and enthusiastic account.’ Elizabeth Wilson, author of Adorned in Dreams ‘Rigorously researched and persuasively argued, Glamour represents an important contribution to the social history of fashion and of fabulousness.’ Caroline Weber, author of Queen of Fashion ‘Riveting – from perfume to sexual politics and the precise definition of “It”, Dyhouse

NO. 85 he Museum of Modern Art FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart SIXTY YEARS OF PARAMOUNT FILMS IN SEVEN-WEEK RETROSPECTIVE AT MUSEUM OF MODERN ART On July 12, 1912, "Queen Elizabeth," starring Sarah Bernhardt, opened at the Lyceum Theatre in New York and 60 years later to the day on Thursday (July 12, 1972), the same picture will be presented by The Museum of Modern Art. It will initiate a new seven- week retrospective— Paramount Pictures: Sixty Years. "Queen Elizabeth," though made in France, was imported to this country by Adolph Zukor, the founder of Paramount Pictures, and it is still circulated by the Museum to colleges and film societies around the country. The picture today stands out in the annals of film history because it introduced the early feature at a time when one- and two- reelers prevailed in the peep shows of the penny arcades. During World War I, European film production diminished and America emerged as a film power. Paramount Pictures became one of the five major film studios, and for the past six decades it has been a source of many important American and European films. Among them are the original "The Ten Commandments" (1923), by Cecil B. DeMille; "Beau Geste" (1926), starring Ronald Colman; Ernst Lubitsch's "Trouble in Paradise" (1932); "The Miracle of Morgan' s Creek" (1944), which brought fame to Preston Sturges; and "Sunset Boulevard" (1950), the Billy Wilder film starring Gloria Swanson in what was virtually a case history of the cinema in terms of a once famous silent film star.

  • 4 SMN Ad Blood & Sand Valentino
Thursday 2 July is … Silent Movie Night at the Baxter Arts Centre 3 Stanley Street, Bloomfield BLOOD & SAND – RUDOLPH VALENTINO Rudolph Valentino's star power burns through this exotic melodrama of an Andalusian peasant boy who becomes the greatest matador in all of Spain. Juan Gallardo (Valentino) marries a friend from his childhood, the beautiful and virtuous Carmen (Lee), but after he achieves fame and fortune he finds himself drawn to Doña Sol (Naldi), a wealthy, seductive widow. They embark on a torrid affair with rather sadomasochistic overtones, but Juan, feeling guilty over his betrayal of Carmen, tries to free himself of Doña Sol. Furious at being rejected, she exposes their affair to Carmen and Juan's mother, seemingly destroying his marriage. Growing more and more miserable and dissipated, Juan becomes reckless in the arena. He is eventually killed in a bullfight but does manage to reconcile with Carmen moments before he dies. There is also a subplot involving a local outlaw whose career is paralleled to Juan's throughout the film by the village philosopher: Juan's fatal injury in the bullring comes moments after the outlaw is shot by the police. Journeyman director Fred Niblo mounts this grand piece of romantic nonsense with little subtlety but plenty of spectacle, and in the best Hollywood tradition celebrates the macho glamour of the sport while decrying its cruelty. Valentino's charisma and confidence and smoldering eyes give the film a simmering, sultry life that no remake has been able to capture (with apologies to Sean Axmaker, Amazon and Wikipedia) • Actors: Rosa Rosanova as Angustias, Rudolph Valentino as Juan Gallardo, Nita Naldi as Doña Sol, Leo White as Antonio, Lila Lee as Carmen • Directors: Dorothy Arzner and Fred Niblo • Release Date: 5 August 1922 • Run Time: 108 minutes • Production Co: Paramount Pictures, Famous Players-Lasky Corporation Free admission.
