The Intellectual Warfare of Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers and the Battle for Ancient Nubia as a Foundational Paradigm in Africana Studies: Thoughts and Reflections by Josef Ben Levi Northeastern Illinois University Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies The Kemetic Institute of Chicago Professor Josef Ben Levi ([email protected]) is a scholar of Philosophy, History (ancient and modern), Ethics, Sociology, Education and classical African civilizations with a focus on Ancient Egypt (Kemet), Ancient Nubia (Ta Seti) and its environment. He is one of the founding members of the Kemetic Institute of Chicago as well as its current Associate Director. He is also a charter member of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC). Currently he is an instructor at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies at Northeastern Illinois University. Abstract This article is intended to remind Africana scholars about what Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop called the necessary “pluridisciplinary skills” encompassing what he described as three factors: Historical, Linguistic, and Psychological. This has vast implications for the field of Africana Studies. African-Centered scholars engaging in what Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers called “Intellectual Warfare” are struggling against well-financed and organized European intellectual armies preparing to do battle with us to the end. In order to combat these challenges Africana scholars must be grounded in African-Centered theory, methodology and pedagogy. In this article I first explain what led me to become a soldier in this battle for the liberation of the African mind. Then I explain the importance of Nubian Studies to Africana Studies as a form of emancipatory thinking against those interlopers, Black and white, who would dismiss our intellectual struggle. -

Thesis in The Date Of Tomb TT 254 Verification Through Analysis of its Scenes Thesis in The Date of Tomb TT 254 Verification through Analysis of its Scenes Sahar Mohamed Abd el-Rahman Ibrahim Faculty of Archeology, Cairo University, Egypt Abstract: This paper extrapolates and reaches an approximate date of the TOMB of TT 254, the tomb of Mosi (Amenmose) (TT254), has not been known to Egyptologists until year 1914, when it was taken up from modern occupants by the Antiquities Service, The tomb owner is Mosi , the Scribe of the treasury and custodian of the estate of queen Tiye in the domain of Amun This tomb forms with two other tombs (TT294-TT253) a common courtyard within Al-Khokha necropolis. Because the Titles/Posts of the owner of this tomb indicated he was in charge of the estate of Queen Tiye, no wonder a cartouche of this Queen were written among wall paintings. Evidently, this tomb’s stylistic features of wall decorations are clearly influenced by the style of Amarna; such as the male figures with prominent stomachs, and elongated heads, these features refer that tomb TT254 has been finished just after the reign of Amenhotep IV (Akhenatun). Table stands between the deceased and Osiris which is divided into two parts: the first part (as a tray) is loading with offerings, then the other is a bearer which consisted of two stands shaped as pointed pyramids… based on the connotations: 1- Offerings tables. 2- Offerings Bearers. 3- Anubis. 4- Mourners. 5- Reclamation of land for cultivation. 6- Banquet in some noble men tombs at Thebes through New Kingdom era. -

Interactive timelines and a large-scale digital map highlight the ebb and flow of ancient cultures, from Egypt and the earliest Mesopotamian kingdoms of the Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians, to the vast Persian, Hellenistic, and finally Roman empires, the latter eventually encompassing the entire Mediterranean region. Paul van Pelt, Nico Staring Previous examinations of ancient Egyptian graffiti have focused on textual graffiti and developed interpre- tations specific to this class of evidence. In contrast, relatively few studies have considered the communica- tive power and meaning of figural graffiti, presumably because of the inherent challenges that this data set presents to academic research. To counterbalance the current emphasis on textual graffiti, this contribution examines graffiti making in the New Kingdom necropolis at Saqqara using an integrated approach taking in both textual and figural material. In accordance with the imagistic principle of Egyptian magic, the authors propose that certain types of figural graffiti may be regarded as pictorial prayers in their own right, intended to ensure the permanent presence of the graffitist in the tomb, or to protect and beatify the deceased in the afterlife. Since literacy is not a prerequisite for drawing a picture, the important question is raised of whether the production of figural graffiti expanded throughout the social scale or, like textual graffiti, was restricted to the elite and sub-elite. ملخص البحث: الدراسات السابقة التي تم اإجرؤها على الكتابة و النقوش الجد ا ري ة المصرية القديمة رك زت إهتمامها على تفسيرات معينة لهذا 120 النوع من اﻷدلة. في المقابل تناولت بعض الدراسات القوة التعبيرية والمعنى من وراء النقوش التصويرية، على اﻷرجح بسبب التحديات التي توفرها مجموعة البيانات هذه إلى البحث اﻷكاديمي. -
Algol As Horus in the Cairo Calendar: the Possible Means and the Motives of the Observations

Previous astronomical, astrophysical and statistical analyses of CC support the idea that this was the period of the eclipsing binary Algol three millennia ago. However, next to nothing is known about who recorded Algol’s period into CC and especially how. Here, we show that the ancient Egyptian scribes had the possible means and the motives for such astronomical observations. Strong Girton College University of Cambridge January 2018 Illuminating the path of darkness: social and sacred power of artificial light in Pharaonic Period Egypt Meghan E. Strong ABSTRACT Light is seldom addressed in archaeological research, despite the fact that, at least in ancient Egypt, it would have impacted upon all aspects of life. When discussing light in Egyptology, the vast majority of scholarly attention is placed on the sun, the primary source of illumination. In comparison, artificial light receives very little attention, primarily due to a lack of archaeological evidence for lighting equipment prior to the 7th century BC. However, 19th and 20th century lychnological studies have exaggerated this point by placing an overwhelming emphasis on decorated lamps from the Greco-Roman Period. In an attempt to move beyond these antiquarian roots, recent scholarship has turned towards examining the role that light, both natural and artificial, played in aspects of ancient societies’ architecture, ideology and religion. The extensive body of archaeological, textual and iconographic evidence that remains from ancient Egypt is well suited to this type of study and forms three core data sets in this thesis. Combining a materials- based examination of artificial light with a contextualized, theoretical analysis contributes to a richer understanding of ancient Egyptian culture from the 3rd to 1st millennium BC. The first three chapters of this study establish a typology of known artificial lighting equipment, as well as a lexicon of lighting terminology.
