Holden Environmental Scientist I Barbara Goetting Environmental Specialist I Thomas Dix Environmental Scientist II MARCH 2003 1 Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County Richard Garrity, Ph.D. Executive Director Gerold Morrison, Ph.D. Director, Environmental Resources Management Division 2 INTRODUCTION The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC) has been collecting samples in Middle Tampa Bay 1993 as part of the bay-wide benthic monitoring program developed to (Tampa Bay National Estuary Program 1996). The original objectives of this program were to discern the ―health‖—or ―status‖-- of the bay’s sediments by developing a Benthic Index for Tampa Bay as well as evaluating sediment quality by means of Sediment Quality Assessment Guidelines (SQAGs). The Tampa Bay Estuary Program provided partial support for this monitoring. This report summarizes data collected during 1993-1998 from the Middle Tampa Bay segment of Tampa Bay. 3 METHODS Field Collection and Laboratory Procedures: A total of 127 stations (20 to 24 per year) were sampled during late summer/early fall ―Index Period‖ 1993-1998 (Appendix A). Sample locations were randomly selected from computer- generated coordinates. Benthic samples were collected using a Young grab sampler following the field protocols outlined in Courtney et al. (1993). Laboratory procedures followed the protocols set forth in Courtney et al. (1995). Data Analysis: Species richness, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and Evenness were calculated using PISCES Conservation Ltd.’s (2001) ―Species Diversity and Richness II‖ software. -

Ambrose2 1Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, PO Box 28, Edgewater, Maryland 21037, USA 2Environmental Science and Engineering Program, Box 951772, University of California, Los Angeles, California 90095, USA ABSTRACT: Despite mounting evidence of invasive species’ impacts on the environment and society, our ability to predict invasion establishment, spread, and impact are inadequate. Efforts to explain and predict invasion outcomes have been limited primarily to terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. Invasions are also common in coastal marine ecosystems, yet to date predictive marine invasion mod- els are absent. Here we present a model based on biological attributes associated with invasion suc- cess (establishment) of marine molluscs that compares successful and failed invasions from a group of 93 species introduced to San Francisco Bay (SFB) in association with commercial oyster transfers from eastern North America (ca. 1869 to 1940). A multiple logistic regression model correctly classi- fied 83% of successful and 80% of failed invaders according to their source region abundance at the time of oyster transfers, tolerance of low salinity, and developmental mode. We tested the generality of the SFB invasion model by applying it to 3 coastal locations (2 in North America and 1 in Europe) that received oyster transfers from the same source and during the same time as SFB. The model cor- rectly predicted 100, 75, and 86% of successful invaders in these locations, indicating that abun- dance, environmental tolerance (ability to withstand low salinity), and developmental mode not only explain patterns of invasion success in SFB, but more importantly, predict invasion success in geo- graphically disparate marine ecosystems. -

Healy School of Biological Sciences (Zoology, A08), University of Sydney; 2006, New South Wales, Australia ABSTRACT: Ultrastructural observations on spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of selected pyramidellid gastropods (species of Turbonilla, ~gulina, Cingufina and Hinemoa) are presented. During spermatid development, the condensing nucleus becomes initially anterio-posteriorly com- pressed or sometimes cup-shaped. Concurrently, the acrosomal complex attaches to an electron- dense layer at the presumptive anterior pole of the nucleus, while at the opposite (posterior) pole of the nucleus a shallow invagination is formed to accommodate the centriolar derivative. Midpiece formation begins soon after these events have taken place, and involves the following processes: (1) the wrapping of individual mitochondria around the axoneme/coarse fibre complex; (2) later internal metamorphosis resulting in replacement of cristae by paracrystalline layers which envelope the matrix material; and (3) formation of a glycogen-filled helix within the mitochondrial derivative (via a secondary wrapping of mitochondria). Key words – Gastropoda, Pyramidelloidea, taxonomy. The pyramidelloidean gastropods newly collected from one stratigraphic section and two spot localities in the Rembang anticlinorium (Middle Miocene, northeastern Java) are described and those of various ages in the collections of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden are reviewed. A total of 111 species are covered in this paper; another 22 taxa dealt with by previous authors, of which the material was not available, are briefly commented on in an appendix. The “Rembangian” (Middle Miocene) assemblage consists of 89 spe- cies. Four are identified as formerly described species, namelyLeucotina speciosa (Adams), Megastomia regina (Thiele), Exesilla dextra (Saurin) and Exesilla splendida (Martin); 52 are proposed as new; most of the others almost certainly represent previously undescribed species, but cannot be named because of inadequate ma- terial. Parodostomia jogjacartensis (Martin), Parodostomia vandijki (Martin) and Pyramidella nanggulanica Finlay, described from the Eocene deposits of Java, seem to be restricted to that epoch. The Neogene fauna appears to be composed almost entirely of extinct species. Only Leucotina speciosa (Adams), Megastomia regina (Thiele), Longchaeus turritus (Adams), Pyramidella balteata (Adams), Exesilla dextra (Saurin) and Nisiturris alma (Thiele) are still present in modern Indo-West Pacific faunas. Most Neogene species seem to be endemic of the Indonesian Archipelago; relationships with other West Pacific fossil faunas have been noted for only a few taxa. -
