  • Cutting Patterns in DW Griffith's Biographs
Cutting patterns in D.W. Griffith’s Biographs: An experimental statistical study Mike Baxter, 16 Lady Bay Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5BJ, U.K. (e-mail: [email protected]) 1 Introduction A number of recent studies have examined statistical methods for investigating cutting patterns within films, for the purposes of comparing patterns across films and/or for summarising ‘average’ patterns in a body of films. The present paper investigates how different ideas that have been proposed might be combined to identify subsets of similarly constructed films (i.e. exhibiting comparable cutting structures) within a larger body. The ideas explored are illustrated using a sample of 62 D.W Griffith Biograph one-reelers from the years 1909–1913. Yuri Tsivian has suggested that ‘all films are different as far as their SL struc- tures; yet some are less different than others’. Barry Salt, with specific reference to the question of whether or not Griffith’s Biographs ‘have the same large scale variations in their shot lengths along the length of the film’ says the ‘answer to this is quite clearly, no’. This judgment is based on smooths of the data using seventh degree trendlines and the observation that these ‘are nearly all quite different one from another, and too varied to allow any grouping that could be matched against, say, genre’1. While the basis for Salt’s view is clear Tsivian’s apparently oppos- ing position that some films are ‘less different than others’ seems to me to be a reasonably incontestable sentiment. It depends on how much you are prepared to simplify structure by smoothing in order to effect comparisons.

  • Sketches of My Life
Sketches of My Life By George Peek Richwood. W. Va. Digitally Published by THE GOSPEL TRUTH www.churchofgodeveninglight.com Originally Published by Faith Publishing House 1939 George Peek at the age of twenty-two years Preface The light of this world dawned upon me for the first time, February 18, 1872, at the home of my parents, William and Elizabeth Peek, in Macon County, North Carolina. I was the tenth of a family of twelve children. The names from the oldest down were: Keniday, Sarah, Mary Ann, Isaac, Montgomery, Juda, Zachariah, Laura, Millie, George, Dora, and Callie. All lived to raise families of their own except Sarah, who died at the age of 12. All four of my brothers have passed away, beginning at the oldest down to the youngest, who went to his reward one month ago. My sisters are all living, although some are very feeble. The whole family, father and mother included, have been and are religious. Isaac was a preacher. My object in writing this book is not that people may hear about my good qualities and think of me as an example. If that were my aim, I surely would try to pull the veil over a good portion of my life, as I have been called and justly so, I guess, the black sheep of the family. My aim is to show men and women who are as bad or worse than I was, that God’s mercy and grace is extended to the blackest among us. So I will tell the truth with no desire for honor for self, but a burning desire to honor my King.

Bess Meredyth Also Known As: Helen MacGlashan, Mrs. Wilfred Lucas, Mrs. Michael Curtiz Lived: February 12, 1890 - July 13, 1969 Worked as: adapter, co-director, co-screenwriter, comedienne, continuity, extra, film actress, film cutter, musical comedy actress, novelist, scenario writer, source author, title writer Worked In: Australia, United States by Victoria Sturtevant Bess Meredyth is mentioned in nearly every account of women screenwriters of the silent era, but very few details about her work seem to make it into print. The richest source for information about this extremely prominent screenwriter is Eighty Odd Years in Hollywood, the autobiography of Meredyth’s son, John Meredyth Lucas. This text, too, however, leaves large gaps in detail and in the chronology of the author’s mother’s career, and the son reflects: “It, unfortunately, never seemed important that I learn Mother’s early history. She never wrote it, only mentioned a few disconnected anecdotes. I never asked. By the time the questions were formed, the answers had died” (19). Born Helen MacGlashan in Buffalo, New York, Bess Meredyth’s father was the manager of a local theatre, and she began working as an organist and later a vaudeville light comedienne in her teens.
