Our Vision We envision our students to embrace the Maryknoll spirit signified by the school motto "Sola Nobilitas Virtus” (Virtue Alone Ennobles).

Our School Introduction Maryknoll Convent School (MCS) Secondary Section is an EMI Anglo-Chinese Roman Catholic day school for girls. It is financially assisted by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR as a “Grant-in- Aid” School. The language of instruction at MCS is English except in classes where Chinese or Putonghua constitutes the subject material.

History In 1925, the Maryknoll Sisters began teaching 12 students in the convent parlour at 103 . They taught classes in basic subjects. In the decades that followed, the number of students grew, as did the number of teaching staff. After six years on , Maryknoll Convent School (MCS) moved to in 1937. World War II interrupted their teaching, but the Sisters resumed their work in 1945. In 1960, the Secondary Section relocated to 5 Ho Tung Road while the Primary Section remained on Boundary Street. From an initial class of 12 students and a few Sisters, the school (both primary and secondary sections) has grown to its current full capacity of 2000 students with a faculty of over 100. Since 2005, the Maryknoll Convent School Foundation Ltd., comprising Maryknoll Sisters and former teachers and students, has assumed the sponsorship of the school.

School Facilities The secondary section of MCS has been operating in a single building of three storeys. The Jockey Club Wing with additional classrooms and other facilities was erected in 1995. There are 31 classrooms as well as laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, and junior science. In addition to a lecture room, the student canteen, assembly hall, conference room, staff resource rooms, staffroom, prefects' room, Student Association room and prayer room, there are special rooms assigned to visual arts, music, cookery, sewing and computer studies. In 2002, a Multi-Media Learning Centre (MMLC) was added to facilitate computer-assisted learning of all subjects. The MMLC was subsequently upgraded in 2019 with new furniture and equipment. There are also outdoor and covered playgrounds and a swimming pool and basketball court shared with the primary school. The campus features lawns, trees, bushes and flowerbeds.

The Rogers Annexe, constructed under the School Improvement Programme, was opened in September 2004. This has facilitated various aspects of learning with the provision of more classrooms as well as rooms for specific functions, namely the Multi-Purpose Area, Student Activity Centre, extended Library, and the Computer Assisted Learning, Geography, Careers, Character Building Committee, Guidance Activity and Editorial Board Rooms, etc. In 2016-2017, all classrooms and special rooms were covered with wi-fi and in 2017-2018, all classrooms were equipped with digital media players to facilitate e-Learning. A 21st Century 2 Annual School Report 2019-2020 Classroom and a 21st Century Supportive Education Room were set up in 2017-2018. The rooms were furnished with furniture and equipment which facilitate learning 21st Century skills. In 2018- 2019, a Makerspace (STEM Room) was set up to enhance the promotion of STEM Education. In 2019-2020, a section of the Library has been converted to create a space for students’ discussion and carry out other learning activities; the Needlework Room was also converted to become a Multi- Purpose Room where small group teaching can be conducted as well as supporting Needlework activities.

3 Annual School Report 2019-2020 School Management School Organization: We follow a school-based management framework with the sponsoring body exercising the highest authority. The Maryknoll Convent School Secondary Section Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) was established in 2013, with different partners working together in the management of the school.

The Principal and the Vice Principals work with four Core Groups to support the administration of the school: Curriculum and Academic Affairs, General Resources Management, Student Support and Pastoral Care and School Development. The core group members are in charge of the Key Learning Areas, Global, Citizenship & Civic Education, pastoral care, character-building, counselling, ECA, environmental protection, community service, religious activities etc. In addition, the School Advisory Committee and the General Staff Assembly connect staff and the school administration and take part in decision-making.

Achievements and Reflection on Selected School Goals

Major Concern #1: To deepen the implementation of the 4 Strategic Foci identified by the Sponsoring Body to optimise students’ learning outcome

Targets:

a) To empower and encourage our students:  To serve: encourage students to embrace service as a way of life for Maryknollers as they grow as individuals and contributors to society  To pursue excellence: instill in students a strong growth mindset, a will to aim high and the humility to seek improvement  To realize their potential to the full: promote intellectual, aesthetic, physical, spiritual and social development based on students’ needs and gifts  To be forward looking: equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and values to prepare them for the globally connected VUCA world b) To build teacher capacity and enhance wellbeing

Achievements: Preamble: Due the social unrest in the first term and the subsequent struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the activities highlighted in the school plan had not been carried out. However, we are blessed that our students were able to achieve in different aspects despite all these unprecedented challenges.  The Student Association had taken the lead in serving the school and the community. During the first term, the SA turned the annual Walkathon to an equally meaningful fundraising programme - volleyball matches with teachers, students and parents on different teams.  During the pandemic, the SA prepared practical gifts (a small card with a bottle of antiseptic fluid) for each student and staff members to boost the morale of all. In addition, they called upon the current and former students to write messages of encouragement for the medical staff in public hospitals in Hong Kong. In addition, they also sent anti-epidemic supplies to the Maryknoll sisters in the U.S., followed by heartwarming messages to both Maryknoll sisters in the Motherhouse and Maryknoll priests in the sisters’ neighbourhood, in the U.S., to support them when the pandemic was hitting them hard earlier in the year.  The School-Based programmes, namely the Extended Learning Programme, Project-Based Learning and STEM Education Programme, were further improved by teachers concerned to suit the needs of the junior classes. Despite the extended period of class suspension, students were able to achieve tasks assigned by teachers and most students gained confidence in working as a

5 Annual School Report 2019-2020 group and in class presentations.  Cross-curricular and life-wide learning opportunities were offered to the students, both locally and overseas.

o Local programmes: Even though we were not able to carry out the exchange programmes with our partner schools as planned, students took part in joint-school competitions done online. The STEM+E Programme was a success, where students from different schools form teams to work on the promotion of STEM-related products produced by start-up companies. o Overseas programmes: Our school joined a Hong Kong-Scotland School Improvement Partnership (HKSSIP) for the first time in early November 2019. The school supervisor and a senior teacher led a group of 4 students to have an exchange programme with high schools in Scotland. The students had lessons in our Sister School, St Thomas of Aquin RC High School in Scotland. The trip was a fruitful one in terms of experiences gained in the cultural exchange programmes with the students in Scotland, as well as the friendship gained with the other Hong Kong schools which joined the programme.  Through allocating suitable resources, students were able to pursue excellence in various disciplines. Despite the challenges in the past year, students took part in activities when they had the opportunities to do so. Some activities could be done in face-to-face meetings and others were done online.  As part of the 6-year eLearning plan started in 2015/16, teachers were able to promote eLearning in various panels. Suitable equipment and e-platforms were available for all teachers – at the beginning of the school year, each teacher was given an iPad Pro with pencil. This came in handy when online learning became the norm during the days of class suspension in the months from February to May 2020. Staff Development Programmes were facilitated online to help teachers engage in synchronous and asynchronous online teaching-learning during the days when students have to stay at home for their learning activities. Those teachers who had a head start in the mastery of the eLearning equipment and platforms supported others during the period of class suspension. The partnership would continue to help different teachers in coping with the possible extension of non face-to-face teaching-learning mode due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the next school term.  The library enhancement project Phase 1 was completed. The rooms refurbished for Phase 1 of the library enhancement project provided space for students to have discussions, collaborate for group projects and make the library a learning hub rather than just a place for passive silent reading. To stimulate students’ interest in reading, the Maryknoll Reading Challenge was launched for the F.1 and F.2 students, where students were to fulfil certain tasks to achieve goals set. It was not a competition but a self-motivated and self-paced reading marathon.  Green Ambassadors among the staff joined hands with the General Resource Team in reviewing the school’s existing green practices and introduced the collection of plastic bottles among other things. They also looked for community resources such as the Jockey Club BEAM Plus in- School Project to seek ways to help promote the cause of de-carbonization, as well as explore about the Solar Harvest Project for installing solar panels on the rooftop of one of our school 6 Annual School Report 2019-2020 buildings.  The Staff Development Day 1 with a workshop to help enhance teachers’ coaching skills was held in the first term. Teachers were introduced to the idea of life coaches and acquire suitable coaching skills to help students. Participants found the workshop helpful and were ready to practise skills acquired.  Resources had been identified for relieving teachers of excessive administration work. With the support of the MCS Educational Trust, a few non-teaching staff members were added to the staff to ease the admin workload of teachers. They include a teaching assistant, a Sports assistant and a STEM assistant. They were able to support the teachers in different areas and were especially helpful during the class suspension days to offer support when needed with the administration duties while teachers can focus on the teaching-learning challenges to provide synchronous and asynchronous online teaching-learning.

Reflection  The school continued to provide opportunities to empower and encourage students in going after the four strategic foci identified by the School Sponsoring Body with the challenges of the past academic year.  Crises became opportunities for teachers and students to be motivated to acquire useful 21st Century skills to overcome challenges in the VUCA world. Teachers and students became more adept in using online platforms for teaching and learning as well as taking part in different projects to bring good to the school and the wider community.  Blended learning, with a mix of online and face-to-face learning, will be the way forward. Acquisition of suitable IT equipment, online platforms including suitable apps, will be a major task in the coming year(s). Suitable improvement in pedagogy with appropriate teacher training for blended learning to be carried out effectively will be explored.

Major Concern #2: To promote character education and live out our school motto (SOLA NOBILITAS VIRTUS) Targets: a) To cultivate the following virtues that ennoble the character:  Faith  Prudence  Temperance b) To bring out unique character core to the Maryknoll spirit

Achievements:  The virtues, Faith, Prudence and Temperance, have been able to help students reflect on their life experiences and in the context of the challenges of they face in the school year. These virtues became anchors for students to support them in face of adversities.

7 Annual School Report 2019-2020  Students were guided by their homeroom teachers to set class and personal goals related to the targeted virtues. At the end of the school year, teachers helped students to evaluate on the personal and class goals set. Majority of them were able to work towards their goals despite the extended class suspension period.  Panels and Committees were able to facilitate the acquisition of the targeted virtues in alignment with the Maryknoll Spirit by identifying relevant activities in their own year plans. Despite the reduction of the school programmes and activities, the panels were able to carry on the scheme of work based on plans for facilitating the targeted virtues.  Riding on the preparation for the celebration of the 95th school anniversary, the Maryknoll Spirit was further promoted by the activities planned. Despite some programmes being cancelled, the themes promoted were shared during assemblies and other presentations. Online resources were used to promote the Maryknoll Spirit despite the cancellation of physical gatherings.

Reflection:  Students’ creativity can be further enhanced due to the uncertainties regarding the pandemic situation. Given that there might be limitations on the mode of offering services, students can be encouraged to devise creative ways in conducting class services.  The various committees used to offering hall programmes may need to reduce the number of such programmes but through having an overview of activities offered by different committees, they can join hands to map out suitable activities to be offered.  The subcommittees under Student Support & Pastoral Care Team can work together and pull together their efforts in offering age-appropriate themes for their activities. The newly set-up Character Education Committee can fine-tune the subcommittees’ terms of reference to enhance their character education efforts.  The teacher coordinators identified under the ECA Committee can strengthen their leading role to help moderators of clubs or activities of similar nature to develop common meaningful goals to help students develop their potentials and talents.  The targeted virtues will continue to help strengthen the students’ character and guide them in life. They are especially important in face of the challenges of the VUCA world that have been clearly manifested in the past year.

8 Annual School Report 2019-2020 Our Learning and Teaching

Learning & Teaching Strategies We have clear-cut objectives and policies for fashioning a curriculum in line with the school's vision and mission, and with the intellectual, spiritual, psychological, emotional and physical needs of our students. We provide our students with different learning experiences as an integral part of education for whole person development. Our curriculum is balanced, comprehensive and multi-faceted and caters for a broad range of abilities and needs. We have flexible timetables to accommodate our diverse, cross-curricular and extended learning activities, particularly those designed to promote civic and moral education. Student-centred Learning and eLearning activities are systematically introduced in class. Our school-based subjects, namely, Extended Learning Programme, Project-based Learning and STEM Education, form an integral part of the junior-form curriculum. They can complement the knowledge and skills students acquire in other regular subjects. They are designed to enhance students’ 21st Century skills. Online Learning, whether Synchronous or Asynchronous, and Blended Learning, with a mix of online and face-to-face teaching-learning, are important modes of learning the school will embrace and further enhance in the days ahead.

Key Tasks (Reading to learn & Project-based Learning): A reading session is built into our Monday to Thursday regular timetable. The school also runs an on- line reading programme for Chinese books and English reading materials. The school organizes regular sharing sessions featuring famous authors and speakers in order to promote students’ interest in reading. Reading Ambassadors are chosen to promote reading throughout the school year. With the introduction of the Milk Library, book-crossing is encouraged as another means to encourage reading in and out of classroom. Students' critical thinking skills and creativity are improved through classroom discussion, project work and different learning and teaching activities. Form 1 students have two lessons of Project- based Learning each week, through which they can acquire the skills required for effective independent learning by working on group projects. They learn to carry out research on a topic of their own interest and write up a research report at the end of the school year. As they move up to higher forms, they expand their knowledge and skills by working on projects in different subject areas.

Teaching & Learning in Information Technology: We have 3 computer rooms, including a multi-media learning centre (MMLC), to serve our students’ needs. In addition, our students can go online in the school library to gather information. Every one of our classrooms is equipped with a computer, a digital media player and microconsole, a visualizer, a screen and an LCD projector to facilitate eLearning where deemed appropriate. All classrooms and 9 Annual School Report 2019-2020 special rooms have wi-fi access and eLearning activities are employed when appropriate. Computer notebooks and tablets are available to facilitate eLearning. Various e-platforms were employed to make teaching and learning interactive. Collaboration apps such as Nearpod, Google Docs and slides were used during class time. Google Suite for education and our intranet platform, eClass, make it possible for teaching-learning and communication to take place outside school hours and outside the school setting. Each teacher is issued with a notebook computer. With mobile eLearning devices made readily available to students and upgraded eLearning equipment and facilities in the classrooms and special rooms, eLearning can be facilitated in all lessons.

Medium of Instruction Policy: All classes, apart from Chinese Language, Chinese History and Putonghua, are conducted in English. Putonghua is a compulsory subject from Forms 1 to 3. Our English Club runs the annual English Week and English camp. Through Chinese and English reading schemes, prose reading and verse speaking, drama and musicals, we seek to maintain a high level of proficiency in biliteracy and trilingualism well beyond the requirements of public exams.

Curriculum Tailoring and Adaptation for Learning and Assessment: We administer a midyear and a final examination every school year, supplemented by regular quizzes. The Common Test Weeks, which have replaced the frequent tests that went on during the year, allows students to study at their own pace and develop self-directed learning. It also gives room for teachers to have more diverse teaching strategies to cater for students’ needs in the first term. Our method of assessment takes into consideration both a student's written assignments and her formative assessment taks in class.

The school provides additional resources to provide pull-out programmes for Non-Chinese students. These will prepare them for the alternative Chinese Language public exams recognized by the universities. Additional resources are devoted to help Non-Chinese students to be able to catch up with their Chinese counterparts in terms of their Chinese Language standards. Other than preparing for the alternative Chinese exams, more emphasis has been put in enhancing the Non-Chinese students’ language skills beyond the examination curriculum. Extra-curricular activities are also run to promote understanding and create harmony among students from different cultures. These also help the Non-Chinese students practise the Chinese language in a meaningful way.

Students with Special Educational Needs can apply to have special arrangements made in internal and external examinations and assessment. These depend on the recommendations provided by experts in the area. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) are drafted and implemented under the guidance of Educational Psychologists. Regular case conferences are held to ensure specific needs of students’ concerned are made. 10 Annual School Report 2019-2020

Healthy Lifestyle: At MCS we set great store by our students' physical and mental health.

Physical Wellbeing We offer a wide range of intracurricular and extracurricular sporting activities. All classes, F.1 to F.6, have Physical Education classes which offers a comprehensive curriculum. Besides having sports clubs and teams for selected athletes, the school organizes annual sporting events open to all students e.g. inter-house activities e.g. the Annual Swimming Gala, Annual Athletics Meet and inter-class running competitions and ball games. Besides exploring in class the importance of eating healthily to stay fit, the school conducts events focusing on healthy eating such as 'Fruit Day', ‘Green Friday’ etc. to put into practice our belief in a healthy lifestyle. To ensure that our students follow a balanced diet and sound eating habits, the lunch dishes and the snacks that our school canteen provides are decided on and vetted by qualified nutritionists.

Mental and Psychological Wellbeing The school put great emphasis on promoting mental health. For Staff Development Programmes, the school has invited experts including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and educational psychologists to conduct seminars and workshops to equip teachers with professional knowledge in tackling issues related to mental health.

The school has been promoting positive psychology for more than 10 years. The in-house clinical psychologist has conducted courses for teachers and students to introduce the background and merits of positive psychology. Teachers and student ambassadors have been trained to promote positive psychology. The student ambassadors, called the Smileys, organize programmes to help the junior- form students to get to know and enhance different character strengths. They also help to boost the morale of F.6 students who are stressed due to the exam pressure. The school adopts a comprehensive whole-school approach involving religious and moral education, the homeroom period, guidance provided by a full-time social worker, the Careers Committee, the Extracurricular Activities Committee and the Pastoral Care Core Group, under which the Character Building Committee, the Counselling Committee, the Prefect Board, the Homeroom Teachers’ Committee work together to promote the mental and psychological wellbeing of the students.

16 Annual School Report 2019-2020 Catering for learner diversity Funding from the EDB and the MCS Educational Trust helps to pay for extra services like the running of Learning Support Groups and the provision of school-based educational, psychological and clinical psychological services. Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) are drafted and implemented for students with Special Educational Needs. Case conferences are facilitated by the SEN & Gifted Education Committee regularly between the Educational Psychologists, the School Social Worker, homeroom and subject teachers to discuss students’ learning needs. The Educational Psychologists also conduct surveys to help gauge the different learning styles and identify learning issues of students. Based on the findings, homeroom and subject teachers can offer appropriate assistance to individual students. Enhancement and enrichment classes are run, where appropriate, to help students of different levels of academic ability to excel, stretch their potential and improve. Split classes and pull-out tutorial sessions are run to help students who can benefit from having more individual attention from teachers or instructors.

19 Annual School Report 2019-2020 Students’ Reading Habits This wide range of activities helped to cultivate a reading culture among the majority of students. The more avid readers were able to act as role models for the others.

Students’ reading habits were promoted through:

1. the daily sustained silent reading session (20 minutes) from Monday to Thursday, when all students drop everything and read a book (fiction/non-fiction) of their own choice;

2. recommended reading lists drawn up by the language departments and the school library;

3. reading assignments issued by different subject departments – books (fiction/non-fiction) and newspaper/magazine articles;

4. the addition of new Chinese and English fiction and non-fiction titles as well as local and foreign magazines to the school library every year, catering to the needs and interests of students and teachers;

5. film appreciation: in-class screenings of feature films (e.g. Bloody Sunday, Match Point, The Kite Runner, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Charlotte’s Web, etc.) and adaptations of plays by Shakespeare and other classics (e.g. The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, To Kill a Mockingbird, Rebecca etc.);

6. the subscription to Mary Glasgow magazines – TEAM, CLUB, and CURRENT by junior form students;

7. incorporating the SRA Laboratory into the Form 1 English curriculum 8. the ‘Hylda Christie Book Award’ for the best voracious readers in English in Forms 1 – 6;

9. the book forums organized by the English Club;

10. the participation in the HK Budding Poets (English) Awards organized by The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education; 11. junior- and senior-form writing competitions;

12. having selected essays (Chinese and English) published and circulated by the Chinese Department;

13. the book review displays mounted by the Chinese Club;

14. new book displays in the school library;

15. new initiatives of the Library Team such as the recruitment of Reading Ambassadors and Student Librarians to help promote a better reading climate in school;

16. the installation of the Milk Library in the covered playground to facilitate book crossing; 17. the Maryknoll Reading Challenge (a self-paced, self-motivated reading marathon), in which students can achieve three levels (Level 1: Avid Reader, Level 2: Voracious Reader, Level 3: Bibliophile) by completing reading tasks and writing entries; 18. allowing students to bring their eReaders to school and read during Reading Session.

Student Achievements We value all-round and well-balanced development of our students, and encourage them to pursue excellence in their respective interests and realize their potential to the full. Students are offered a wide range of opportunities and can freely choose to explore. There is broad participation among students, and many achieve outstanding results with personal initiative, effort and perseverance.

In addition to pleasing results in Speech Festivals, we have a few F.4 students who won in the Hang Lung Young Architects Programme and our Chinese Orchestra got the Gold Award. Our girls did well in the STEM + E Programme. One F.3 group got into the top ten and competed in the ‘Ultimate Challenge’ for an online English Language Programme. One F.5 team was an outstanding team in the HKICPA competition. Another group of F5 students formed a team and became the Champion of Digital Marketing Award in the JA Company Programme 1920. The CEO of the team, won the CP Achiever Award in the same programme. Another team got the 2nd Runner-up of the Most Popular Social Innovation Award in the same JA programme.

In Sports, our athletes achieved pleasing results. One F.4 table-tennis player, Judy Poon, took part in the 2019 International Table Tennis Federation Junior Circuit held from 2-6 October 2019 in Otocec, Slovenia. She secured her title as the Champion again in the Junior Girls’ Singles, the 2nd Runner- up in Cadet Girls’ Singles, and the 1st Runner-up in the Junior Girls’ Team where she partnered up with Czech players. As a school, our spirit of service earned us the name of a Heart-to-Heart school, a project organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups in recognition of the outstanding volunteer services of schools, for the past 15 years.

50 Annual School Report 2019-2020 Feedback on Future Planning

This was the second year of our 3-year development cycle. The school continued to embrace the Four Strategic Foci, namely, “Serve Home, Country and the World”; “Pursue Excellence”; “Realize Full Potential” and “Be Forward Looking”, identified by our School Sponsoring Body as crucial to the development of the school. For deepening the implementation of these Foci, plans for carrying out class service projects, STEM Education and teachers’ well-being enhancement will continue to be our highlighted projects in the coming year, especially when the school year 2019-2020 was an atypical year and some of the programmes had been cancelled. The school will pursue continuous curricular development to nurture and enhance 21st century skills.

Our school will maintain a balance in the opportunities we offer to ensure students have opportunities to learn in and outside the classrooms, online or face-to-face. Blended learning will be embraced by the school. This new mode of learning and living also calls for the enhancement of students’ self-management skills and socio-emotional well-being. Additional resources will be devoted to the area.

The virtues, Faith, Prudence and Temperance, embedded in different programmes and curriculum, will continue to help strengthen the students’ character and can guide them in life. The school anticipates uncertainties in the coming academic year as the social unrest and pandemic are still unresolved but the solid virtues will help the school community in embracing challenges ahead.

As the school is moving towards the celebration of the centenary, the catchphrase “Bond and Build towards the Centenary” coined for the celebration of the 95th Anniversary, will continue to breathe life to our school activities.

We will continue to uphold the essence of our school motto as well as our school’s vision and mission to devise forward-looking plans in the context of the 21st Century and the education landscape in Hong Kong. We will continue to be committed to providing quality education to our students.

There has been more students’ involvement in promoting reading; Student Librarians and Reading Ambassadors took an active part in encouraging their schoolmates to read. With the purchase of more new books, students are more enthusiastic about visiting the library during their free time.
