THE PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC. r HEN the essential element or ruling idea of W an Art has reached its widest development and highest expression, so that every attempt to surpass its previous achievements is unavailing, it is a sure sign that the ruling idea is. exhausted and consumed. Not genius itself can recall a period once concluded, or in course of conclusion. The endeavour to erect a new artistic edifice upon that 1 idea as its sole basis, or to derive from that sole it element the source of new artistic life, is futile ; betrays a misconception of the laws by which all- art is governed. Such poetry as we have is all of or tears or memory presentiment ; prayer. So soon, however, as men perceived that the themselves gulf yet remained open, and found to close it so soon as discovered impotent ; they that all these attempts were utterly insufficient to appease the demands of the growing generation, a sense of dismay and discouragement came upon them, which has never been dispelled. Science, the arts, and every form of human know- ledge await the coming of one who shall link and unfte them all in a single idea of civilisation, and concentrate them all in one sole aim. They await his coming, and he is destined to appear. In the meantime, it is well to prepare the way, and to indicate to all who have not despaired of the future, the path of salvation. So far as literature is concerned, these truths, and many others derived from them, may more truly be said to be forgotten than unknown. Bennet Reimer, a renowned music education philosopher, wrote the following, regarding the value of studying the philosophy of music education: “To the degree we can present a convincing explanation of the nature of the art of music and the value of music in the lives of people, to that degree we can present a convincing picture of the nature of music education and its value for human life.”1 In this thesis, I will explore the philosophies of Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, Carl Orff, Zoltán Kodály, Bennett Reimer, and David Elliott, and suggest practical applications of their philosophies in the orchestral classroom, especially in the context of ear training and improvisation.

These terms usually are used in an ethnocentric way to refer to formal Western music, and it is in that context in which the concept of the musical work evolved in the early 19th century. A focus on improvisation will permit an interrogation of the concept of a musical work, by setting it against the essentially imperfect productions of improvisations. We will conclude with a conversation about the politics of music and the role of the audience in musical production. The purpose of this course is to deepen your understanding of music by reflecting on fundamental philosophical questions, but also to deepen your philosophical understanding by examining questions about an ubiquitous human practice.

    Kant’s Expressive Theory of Music Samantha Matherne Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism (2014, pre-print) Abstract: Several prominent philosophers of art (e.g., Kivy, Dahlhaus, Schueller) have worried whether Kant has a coherent theory of music on account of two perceived tensions in his view. First, there appears to be a conflict between his formalist and expressive commitments. Second (and even worse), Kant defends seemingly contradictory claims about music being beautiful and merely agreeable, i.e., not beautiful. Against these critics, I show that Kant has a consistent view of music that reconciles these tensions. I argue that, for Kant, music can be experienced as either agreeable or beautiful depending upon the attitude we take towards it. Though we might be tempted to think he argues that we experience music as agreeable when we attend to its expressive qualities and as beautiful when we attend to its formal properties, I demonstrate that he actually claims that we are able to judge music as beautiful only if we are sensitive to the expression of emotion through musical form. With this revised understanding of Kant’s theory of music in place, I conclude by sketching a Kantian solution to a central problem in the philosophy of music: given that music is not sentient, how can it express emotion? §1.     Chronology of 19 Works in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art Darren Hudson Hick Notes on Selection This chronology, as with this Companion as a whole, focuses on those works that contribute to the Western tradition of aesthetics, and, beginning in the twentieth century, in the analytic current of thought within that tradition (as opposed to the Continental one). As with the history of Western philosophy in general, the study of philosophical problems in art and beauty dates back to the ancient period, and is infl uenced by the major philosophical and cultural move- ments through the centuries. Much of what survives from the ancient to the post-Hellenistic period does so in fragments or references. In cases where only fragments or references exist, and where dating these is especially problematic, the author or attributed author and (where available) his dates of birth and death are listed. Where works have not survived even as fragments, these are not listed. As well, much of what sur- vives up to the medieval period is diffi cult to date, and is at times of disputable attribution. In these cases, whatever information is available is listed. Aesthetics in the period between the ancients and the medievals tends to be dominated by adherence to Platonic, Aristotelian, and other theories rooted in the ancient period, and as such tends to be generally lacking in substantive the- oretical advancements. And while still heavily infl uenced by ancient thinking, works from the medieval period tend also to be heavily infl uenced by religious thinking, and so many issues pertaining to art and aesthetics are intertwined with issues of religion as “theological aesthetics.” Movements in art theory and aes- thetics in the Renaissance, meanwhile, were largely advanced by working artists, and so tend to be couched in observational or pedagogical approaches, rather than strictly theoretical ones.

As the musical aesthetic experience may be said to be at the core of music education, it should be of vital interest to music education research to clarify the term. Usage of this term in some Nordic literature confirms the impression of a strong influence by Anglo- American thinking at the expense of German ideas and discussions in the last decades. The article reveals how different understandings of the term in the Anglo-American and German fields, respectively, give rise even to contradic- tory statements concerning the meaning and implications of the term. Hegel on Music Richard Eldridge 1 At first glance, Hegel says some striking but apparently inconsistent things about music. He appears, first, to defend musical formalism: the view, urged by theorists from Eduard Hanslick to Peter Kivy, that pure instru­ mental music is an acoustic arrangement that signifies nothing. In music as an art, Hegel notes, “sound, just as sound, is treated as an end in it­ self; ... its own form, artistic note-formation, can become its essential end” (A 2:899).* He goes on to indicate in particular that successful art music need not be based on any verbal text. Music has the maximum possibility of freeing itself from any actual text as well as from the expression of any specific subject-matter, with a view to finding satisfaction solely in a self-enclosed series of the conjunc­ tions, changes, oppositions, and modulations falling within the purely musical sphere of sounds. (A 2:901-2) Yet, second, Hegel also remarks that music that is simply self- enclosed development “remains empty and meaningless” (A 2:902).

And why would we choose to listen to Mozart’s Requiem if it genuinely terrified us?) Perhaps our musical descriptions and experiences are metaphorical in some way—but how, and why? What exactly is a musical work anyway? Where, when and how do “Summertime,” or “Stairway to Heaven,” or “Shake Ya Tailfeather” exist? And what makes for a performance of one or the other (or of no work at all)? What, if anything, guides a proper “listening” or understanding of a musical work? Does it require knowledge of relevant musical and cultural conventions, or of the composition’s historical context, or even of the composer’s intentions and guiding aesthetic philosophy? (Think of gamelan music; think of the Sgt. Pepper’s album; think of John Cage.) What determines whether a work, or a performance of it, is good? What role is played by beauty, grace, intensity and so on? And how objective are these aesthetic properties? Finally, why do we sometimes find music to be not just enjoyable, but intensely moving and even profound? Prerequisites: Two courses in philosophy.
