Philosophy of Music Education Mary Barba Dr. David Upham December 9, 2016 Barba 1 Philosophy of Music Education A philosophy of music education refers to the value of music, the value of teaching music, and how to practically utilize those values in the music classroom. Bennet Reimer, a renowned music education philosopher, wrote the following, regarding the value of studying the philosophy of music education: “To the degree we can present a convincing explanation of the nature of the art of music and the value of music in the lives of people, to that degree we can present a convincing picture of the nature of music education and its value for human life.”1 In this thesis, I will explore the philosophies of Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, Carl Orff, Zoltán Kodály, Bennett Reimer, and David Elliott, and suggest practical applications of their philosophies in the orchestral classroom, especially in the context of ear training and improvisation. -

Jerrold Levinson's Musical Concerns: Essays In
___________________________________________________________________________ Book Review LEVINSON, JERROLD. Musical Concerns: Essays in Philosophy of Music. Oxford University Press 2015, 176 pp., $45 hardcover. Reviewed by Caterina Moruzzi Musical Concerns collects twelve essays written by Jerrold Levinson between 2006 and 2014. The value of this collection consists in providing insights both into traditional discussions of the philosophy of music, such as the music-emotion relation, and into alternative and emerging ones, such as the idiosyncrasies of jazz and the values possessed by music. In the first essay, “Philosophy and Music,” Levinson highlights the beneficial results these two disciplines can obtain from mutual engagement. In addition to the more traditional interrelation between composers who look to philosophical theories to get inspiration for their works and philosophers influenced by musical works, he identifies three features common to philosophy and music: the search for completeness (9–10), their nature as forms of thought (10–13), and their deep usefulness despite superficial impracticality (13). “Indication, Abstraction, and Individuation” contrasts a theory developed by Levinson with formalist theories that identify the nature of musical works with their pure form and structure. 1 Levinson’s musical contextualism ascribes ontological importance also to contextual factors such as composer, time of composition, and instrumentation. The creation of the work is carried out by an act of artistic indication, the result of a deliberate choice that sets the standards for the performance of the work itself (50), which assigns to the author’s creation the status of artwork. The next essential step after the creation of a work is its reception by an audience: “The Aesthetic Appreciation of Music” deals with different kinds of appreciation the audience can experience by listening to music. -

Francisco University of Washington Abstract Mahler’s Third Symphony and the Languages of Transcendence Megan H. Francisco Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Stephen Rumph Music History A work reaching beyond any of his previous compositional efforts, Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony embodies cultural, political, and philosophical ideals of the Viennese fin-de- siècle generation. Comprising six enormous movements and lasting over ninety minutes, the work stretches the boundaries of symphonic form while simultaneously testing the patience of its listeners. Mahler provided a brief program to accompany his symphony, which begins with creation, moves through inanimate flowers to animals, before finally reaching humanity in the fourth movement. In this movement, Mahler used an excerpt from Friedrich Nietzsche’s Also sprach Zarathustra to introduce spoken language into the symphony. The relationship of music and language plays an integral role in Mahler’s expressive design of the Third Symphony, specifically in his vision of transcendence. Mahler creates a subtle transformation from elevated language (the fourth) to a polytextuality of folksong and onomatopoeia (the fifth) that culminates in the final, transcendent sixth movement. Throughout these last three movements, Mahler incorporates philosophical concepts from Nietzsche and his beloved Arthur Schopenhauer. In studying the treatment of language in these culminating movements, this thesis shows how Nietzsche’s metaphysical philosophies help listeners encounter and transcend Schopenhauer’s Will at the climactic end of the Third Symphony. -
