  • The Liturgy of Holy Matrimony
طقظ عش اىضٗاج اىَقذط Rite of the Holy Matrimony Amir & Mary May 26,2008 INTRODUCTION By His Eminence Anba Pishoy Metropolitan Of Damietta, Kafr El Sheikh And The Wilderness Of St. Demiana The Holy Synod has studied the so-called “Contract of Possession” which was customarily performed before the “Rite of Crowning.” It was found that originally this rite was called the prayer of the “Matrimonial Pledge.” This rite of the “Matrimonial Pledge” was formerly performed independent of the rite of the “Crowning” as an alternative to the rite of the “Betrothal.” However, since the “Matrimonial Pledge” was not dissolvable, it was joined to the rite of the Crowning, and a separate rite for the Betrothal was instituted. This happened during the Papacy of Pope Cyril IV. A comparison with the rites of the Sacrament of Matrimony in the old Greek Churches revealed the fact that the rite of the Matrimonial Pledge” existed there too. However, it did not contain any special Biblical readings like a Pauline or a Gospel reading. It contained, however, an offering of Incense. Accordingly, the Holy Synod during its assembly on May 29, 1999 A.D. (Bashans 21, 1715 A.M.) headed by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, decreed that it is sufficient to include the three declarations of the wedding proclaiming the names of the Groom and the Bride, followed by the Prayer of Thanksgiving, the Offering of Incense and the Verses of the Cymbals. This is further followed by the first prayer from the rite of Matrimonial Pledge, together with the prayer for the blessing of the wedding garment, the exchange of wedding bands and the hymn “The Spiritual Garment.” 2 As concerning the rite of the Crowning, it was decided to add the following sentence to the “reception of the Bride by the Bridegroom” [So, you too, ought to recognize each other‟s rights, and submit yourselves to one another.

  • Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue
Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue by Joseph Youssef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Joseph Youssef (2019) Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue Joseph Youssef Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Based on 13 months of transnational ethnographic fieldwork between Egypt, Southern California, and Toronto, this dissertation examines questions around exemplarity, morality, and the cultivation of virtue among Coptic Orthodox Christians. Specifically, this thesis investigates the relationship between Coptic monks and the wider Coptic community. Many Copts view monasticism as a morally exemplary way of life. The monk as one who has forsaken all social ties and lives in the desert is regarded as one who has attained the highest form of virtue. This view results in different levels of engagement with monastic practice and competing voices for what it means to be a Coptic Christian. As will be demonstrated through ethnographic details, there is a gap between the ideals of the Coptic monastic imaginary and the lived reality of negotiating Christian virtue for monks and laity alike. Furthermore, this dissertation unpacks the ways in which Coptic monasticism is (re-)imagined and (re-)produced in North America and how Coptic subjectivity is (re-)negotiated in relation to Egypt and the Mother Church. ii Acknowledgments Becoming exemplary is a process as this dissertation will soon show. Whether one strives to be the best monk, Christian, or anthropologist, there are many along the path who are a part of this process, who challenge, encourage, and patiently watch for the individual to grow and formulate their vocation.

  • Exploring Intercultural Marriages in the Coptic Orthodox Church of the GTA
Of All Nations: Exploring Intercultural Marriages in the Coptic Orthodox Church of the GTA by Pishoy Salama A Doctor of Ministry Thesis Submitted to the Faculties of the Toronto School of Theology in Partial Fulfillment of Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Ministry Awarded by The University of St. Michael’s College and The University of Toronto © Copyright by Pishoy Salama 2012 Of All Nations: Exploring Intercultural Marriages in the Coptic Orthodox Church of the GTA Pishoy Salama Doctor of Ministry University of St. Michael’s College and the University of Toronto 2012 ABSTRACT The first wave of Coptic immigrants to Canada started nearly fifty years ago. Copts came from their motherland Egypt, searching for religious freedom and economical prosperity. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) became one of the largest centers in Canada where Copts settled with their families and built their churches. As years passed, the second generation of Copts was starting to marry, not only Coptic spouses, but in many cases, Canadian spouses of varying ethnic backgrounds. This new phenomenon of intermarrying with different cultures was not fully understood, nor at times welcomed, by the Coptic Community. Many Copts wondered about the implications of intercultural marriages (ICMs) on the future of the Copts and the Coptic Church in the GTA. A phenomenological analysis of the lived experience of couples in intercultural marriages was conducted to search for a clearer understanding of these relationships as they currently exist in the GTA. Four focus groups, with three couples in each group, were organized to determine the most important subjects to be discussed in the later stage of interviews.

  • Egyptian Discourses on Coptic Equality Thesis Presented in Partial
“A Christian by Religion and a Muslim by Fatherland”: Egyptian Discourses on Coptic Equality Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Carron White, B.A. Graduate Program in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures The Ohio State University 2011 Committee: Sabra Webber, Ph.D., Advisor Morgan Liu, Ph.D. Copyright by Carron White 2011 Abstract In the discourse concerning the social and political marginalization of the Egyptian Coptic Christian community, there is a widespread assumption that a secular, liberal Egyptian state is the only type of state that will respect Coptic interests and promote democracy and equality. However, contemporary Copts in Egypt have continued to exhibit traditional attitudes towards pivotal issues such as personal status law and the limits of personal autonomy, a trend that suggests that the type of secularism supported by Copts is complex and distinctive from secularism in a Western context. These distinctions can be attributed to Egyptian cultural values that Copts share with Muslim Egyptians as a consequence of the historical experience of Coptic integration into Egyptian society. The increase in sectarian violence since the twentieth century and the pressures of an authoritarian state, along with persistent uncertainties about Egyptian identity and the divisive tenor of relevant scholarship have obscured the reality that Copts and Muslims share a particular Egyptian frame of reference. This thesis endeavors to take these circumstances into account while comparing the attitudes of Coptic intellectuals and activists with those of moderate Egyptian Islamists. While Copts and Islamists certainly differ on a number of issues, there are considerable commonalities that underscore the social and cultural integration of the Coptic community.
