40 Future Problem Solving Program Interational | FPSPI.ORG 2021 Creating the Future Scholarship Recipients

Anjika Jain is a Future Problem Solver from the Future Problem Solving Program International’s Michigan Affiliate. She has immersed herself in the multitude of opportunities that FPS offers, from becoming a Student Representative on the Michigan FPS Board to evaluating GIPS booklets and scenarios. She has years of experience as both team and individual GIPS participant. She learned that collaboration is key and that innovation arises best when various ideas meld into one. Her wisdom led her to coach a group of 4th/5th graders.

Anjika also participated in Community Problem Solving, creating Bridge the Gap. This organization provides opportunities to those with disabilities and bridges the gap between kids with and without special needs. Over the past 4 years, she hosted over 40+ after-school events, created her high school’s first Special Olym- Anjika Jain pics Unified Team, and collaborated with her City’s Event Coordinator to create inclusive activities at city-sponsored events. She ultimately created an app that Michigan helps children with autism achieve essential social and cognitive tasks. When she won the Congressional App Challenge, she credited FPS for creativity and ability to develop various solutions for one overarching issue. During the summer of 2020, Anjika uploaded her app to the Google Play store and created a website to provide resources that focus on mental health issues that many students with special needs may be facing during the pandemic.

She will constantly look for ways to turn knowledge from FPS into real action and do her part in maintaining the program in her school district!

Kate Wang is a Future Problem Solver from the Future Problem Solving Program International’s California Affiliate. She started her FPS journey by competing in GIPS as a team member and individual when she was a fifth-grader. Besides brainstorming somewhat outlandish ideas and narrowing down an action plan during competitions, teaming up with her friends to create skits were some of her most memorable experiences. Her interest in FPS has grown each year since. In eighth grade, she added the new component Scenario Performance to her FPS experience to learn and practice communication and presentation skills. To share her passion, she advocated for FPS in her school, and now she serves as an evaluator to pass on the knowledge she gained to younger students.

FPS changed her mindset and how she approaches problems in real life. She applied the processes she learned in FPS when she worked on solving the toxic pesticide issues in her community. After learning that widely used pesticides in San Diego County parks and schools may be linked to cancer, she teamed up Kate Wang with a few high school students and founded the Non-Toxic San Diego Youth California Action Team to advocate for change. Her team presented their findings to a City Councilmember and recommended replacing toxic pesticides with organic alter- natives in public parks and schools without an increase in costs.

Kate also practices problem-solving skills when volunteering at Solutions for Change, a non-profit that combats family homelessness in San Diego. FPS has equipped her with the powerful tools to tackle these complex issues and create solutions to help her community.

Virtual International Conference 2021 41 2021 Creating the Future Scholarship Recipients

Hannah Schleibinger is a Future Problem Solver from the Future Problem Solving Program International’s Illinois Affiliate. Throughout her Future Problem Solving experiences, she has participated in six international competitions. She has seen multiple different perspectives as she has competed in Global Issues Problem Solving, Scenario Writing, Community Problem Solving, Individual Global Issues Problem Solving, and MAGIC Team.

Hannah maintains a commitment that it fosters a new generation of problem solvers within her community. She strongly advocates for the stressed need of continuing Future Problem Solving within high school. She has gained strong support from administration and classmates in allowing this club to remain essential to their education. Additionally, her passion for encouraging others and deep understanding of engagement in the process has provided the opportuni- ty to be chosen to be an apprentice judge at the Illinois affiliate level. To witness the future generations compete where she once was has allowed her to fully Hannah Schleibinger embrace the Future Problem Solving mission of “developing the ability of young Illinois people globally to design and achieve positive futures through problem solving using critical and creative thinking.”

Hannah’s years of competing within Future Problem Solving at the affiliate and international level has provided multiple unique advantages that many teen- agers do not receive: the opportunity to engage in diverse relationships and education on worldwide curriculum differences. It has opened her eyes to life outside of Illinois and her high school: a world full of creative thinkers, collabora- tors, and those willing to go the extra mile to create successful futures!

42 Future Problem Solving Program Interational | FPSPI.ORG Virtual International Conference 2021 43 Scenario Writing Competitors Scenario Writing Competitors Scenario Writing is an individual competition in which students develop short stories related to the IC topics. The story uses a Future Scene as a prompt to inspire their writing. This competition strives to help students enlarge, enrich, and make more accurate their images of the future, while honing their creative writing skills. It personalizes the ever-growing perspective a student has on the future. In addition, participation provides opportunities for students to meet and exceed educational standards as they refine their writing skills.

Virtual International Conference 2021 49 2021 - 2022 Topics

First paragraphs of the upcoming topics: (Complete descriptions are found on www.fpspi.org/current-topics/)

Water Supply In many parts of the world, freshwater is in short supply. Water is often pumped for miles, streams diverted and reservoirs and dams are constructed to provide for the growing populations in dry areas. As water levels drop and aquifers decline, people become more concerned about preserving their water resources. More than 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water services, and more than 4 billion lack safely managed sanitation services. Differing governmental and commercial demands must be balanced so that communities have enough safe water for their needs. As available water supplies deplete, adjacent areas begin to battle with water contracts and water rights. How might the right to access clean water be achieved? How will regulations shape the future of access to water? How will water scarcity shape society?

Building Green The world is now more urbanized than ever before, and more and more people are flocking to live in large cities. Singapore was once known as the “Garden City”, now it is being promoted as the “Garden in the City” as new buildings incorporate trees and other greenery in their designs. Many quickly growing population centers are more environmentally aware as they expand the living spaces for their citizens. This awareness is not just a case of saving the environment and reducing emissions; it is a matter of necessity for creating healthy cities. Buildings can be designed to conserve both energy and water while improving the indoor and outdoor environment. Advancing technology is changing how architects are incorporating sustainable living practices into buildings. Will these developments solve the problems they have set out to address? Will these change the way cities work and the way people live in them?

Insects Insects - human’s best friends and worst enemies. We are surrounded by more than a million species of insects. Without them, humankind couldn’t survive. Some insects destroy crops and carry diseases. Mosquitoes, which carry diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Ross River, Zika, and West viruses, kill and maim more people each year than any other animal. Others do essential jobs like pollinate blossoms, aerate the soil, decompose dead plant material, or eat other harmful insects, making them essential to the food web. As weather patterns and temperatures change, the distribution and habitat of many insect species are likely to change dramatically. The numbers of bees around the world have been radically reduced due to disease. How does the reduction of some species and relocation of others impact health, agriculture, and horticulture?

Mining Mining is a long-standing means of gathering a wide range of resources vital to aspects of everyday life. The growing demands of mined materials continues to see the mining industry expand at an incredible pace. The technologies in use today and projected for the future are more minerals intensive than ever before. While technology that has made mining both safer and more environmentally sensitive than any other time in history, environmental and other risks remain. Yet without the collection of these important materials, the cornerstones of society like buildings, machines, and communication would not be possible. With environmental protections varying greatly from country-to-country, how can the world collaborate on the best way to extract and share geological materials? With mining as the foundation of countless communities, how will they be impacted by the changing landscape of mining? In the future, are there new areas that might be mined for resources?

52 Future Problem Solving Program Interational | FPSPI.ORG 2021 Adult Awards JOHN DAUGHTREY AWARD

The John Daughtrey Award recognizes outstanding FPSPI directors, evaluators, or staff. John Daughtrey, former Affiliate Director of the North and South Carolina Future Problem Solving Program, was a dedicated advocate of FPS. This year, we are pleased to honor Jacquie Williams and Matt Boyas.

Jacquie’s dedication to the Florida FPS Program is obvious on a daily basis, whether conducting the weekly meetings with kids at two schools, training and mentoring coaches, or evaluating for FPSPI and various other affiliates. She is a consummate problem solver, routinely identifying challenges before they occur and taking action to avert them. The pandemic was just one more challenge; Jacquie created a virtual system for the Group Scenario competition. We received many kudos from coaches, students, and parents who all appreciated the way it was conducted. I hope you will join our Florida affiliate in showing our gratitude for Jacquie’s dedication and drive.

Matt Boyas is one of the people that we can always depend upon for assistance. Regardless of the situation, Matt will step in and help to find and implement the best solution. His experience is invaluable, and his willingness to take on important jobs is so appreciated. He is creative and often has great ideas to connect and promote FPS, and he works hard to do so.

Matt has been a member Boards for the Pennsylvania Affiliate and the International Organization. He evaluates both for local Affiliates, Mentored Regions, and international competitions throughout the year, even taking a large role in Global Issues Problem Solving evaluations at the International Conference each June. In every Affiliate he has been involved with, he has made a difference for them and their students. FPS would not be what is without Matt!

KEITH FRAMPTON AWARD

The Keith Frampton Award recognizes outstanding FPS coaches. Keith Frampton, former head of the Burwood Teacher’s College in Australia, began the Australia/New Zealand FPS program in 1988 and became the first National Director in 1989. This year, we are delighted to honor Deborah Ballin with this award.

Deb Ballin’s dedication to FPS is one of her most valuable assets. When the program was removed from the curriculum, she continued coaching teams on her own time for approximately eight years. She knew the program was valuable to her students and wanted to make sure her pupils continued having the opportunity to participate. The fact that she inspired youth to meet on their own time to participate in the program speaks highly of her dedication and her students realizing the program was enjoyable and valuable. At a State Competition, a few parents shared with me that they were very thankful their children were able to participate in the program. They understood that their children improved both their critical thinking and problem-solving skills because of the opportunity.

In addition to performing her coaching responsibilities at an exemplary level, Ms. Ballin demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to the FPS Program, and her effort over 20 years in and beyond classroom time attests to her devotion. She makes a special effort to help everyone she coaches using a variety of instructional strategies and positive reinforcement. Ms. Ballin can quickly discern individual needs and moves efficiently to provide infor- mation, recommendations, or direction. She instigates fun activities and rewards, including team I-shirts.

JEANNE CARLSON YES AWARD

The Jeanne Carlson Yes Award recognizes outstanding volunteers and supporters. This award was created by Dr. E. Paul Torrance and Pansy, his wife, to honor a person who went above and beyond the call of duty for FPS. This year we are happy to honor Erwin Hosono, Paige Roberts, Tom and Linda Rowland with this award.

As a member of the FPSPI Board of Trustees Erwin has helped the Board and, consequently, the Affiliate Council gain a broader understanding of the finances of FPSPI. During his two terms on the Board, Erwin has guided FPSPI through some important, sometimes difficult, financial decisions, particularly in regard to our investments. His leadership in anticipating the consequences of the pandemic and the money FPSPI will need to carry us through to better times has been invaluable.

Virtual International Conference 2021 53 2021 Adult Awards

In addition to his financial expertise, Erwin is truly a caring man with a deep concern for getting FPS to as many young people as possible around the world. As a Board member, he continually stresses that this is what is needed and supports any actions to make this happen.

Erwin is the parent of an FPS alum and a board member to California FPSP. Erwin has shown his willingness to help FPSPI as an international organization and his dedication to the mission of FPSPI time and time again by always saying “YES” to FPSPI.

Paige Roberts started as a student in FPS Indiana and has become a longtime volunteer for FPS. She served as leadership with Indiana FPS for many years - coordinating evaluation and assisting Affiliate Directors wherever she could. She was instrumental during the 2012 and 2013 International Conferences - going above and beyond her “normal” IC support with coordinating all the ceremonies and acting as the liaison for IO and the university stuff during planning and while on-site. Every year Paige has supported so many efforts for IC and through the year. Paige’s efforts during IC 2020 were “beyond the call of duty”. During the virtual conference Paige worked endlessly as “tech support” for students, coaches, parents, and directors accessing the 3D virtual platform. Her responses and support kept the virtual event running. Her professionalism, kindness, and patience to the onslaught of questions is admired and appreciated.

Tom and Linda Rowland volunteered to be a Team Parent at every state-level competition in Iowa from 2008- 2016. Every year that one of the Rowland children qualified for the FPS International Competition, Tom volun- teered to chaperone. Somehow Tom managed to take time off from work the first week in June eight different years. Tom also volunteered to drive a vanload of lively students to Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin. When the International Conference was in Iowa, Tom was one of the speakers at the Parent Meeting. He spoke about how FPS seemed to meet the needs of each of his children even though those needs were diverse.

Tragedy struck the Rowland family in 2018. Son Michael died in an accident at the age of 21. At the funeral home, many photos of Michael and his FPS teammates showed both high achievements and lasting friendships. Most of Michael’s pallbearers were former Future Problem Solvers. In August 10, 2020, Tom was killed during Iowa’s dere- cho. Tom chaperoned at the FPS International Competition, but one sentence of his obituary read, “His love of family involved…and chauffeuring his kids and others to Future Problem Solvers national competitions.”
