  • Found in Translation: Evolving Approaches for the Localization of Japanese Video Games
arts Article Found in Translation: Evolving Approaches for the Localization of Japanese Video Games Carme Mangiron Department of Translation, Interpreting and East Asian Studies, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 08193 Bellaterra, Barcelona, Spain; [email protected] Abstract: Japanese video games have entertained players around the world and played an important role in the video game industry since its origins. In order to export Japanese games overseas, they need to be localized, i.e., they need to be technically, linguistically, and culturally adapted for the territories where they will be sold. This article hopes to shed light onto the current localization practices for Japanese games, their reception in North America, and how users’ feedback can con- tribute to fine-tuning localization strategies. After briefly defining what game localization entails, an overview of the localization practices followed by Japanese developers and publishers is provided. Next, the paper presents three brief case studies of the strategies applied to the localization into English of three renowned Japanese video game sagas set in Japan: Persona (1996–present), Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2005–present), and Yakuza (2005–present). The objective of the paper is to analyze how localization practices for these series have evolved over time by looking at industry perspectives on localization, as well as the target market expectations, in order to examine how the dialogue between industry and consumers occurs. Special attention is given to how players’ feedback impacted on localization practices. A descriptive, participant-oriented, and documentary approach was used to collect information from specialized websites, blogs, and forums regarding localization strategies and the reception of the localized English versions.

CORK SLIGO DUBLIN GALWAY LIMERICK DUNDALK TIPPERARY WATERFORD CELEBRATING 10 YEARS WELCOME TO THE JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2018 We are 10! 2018 marks a decade of The Embassy of Japan’s collaboration with Access>Cinema. The success in that time was not possible without various supporters, particularly the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation, and we look forward to working with existing and new supporters for 2018. We are really excited about this year’s line- up, which showcases the best of contemporary Japanese cinema, with a mix of new work from established directors and first features from inspiring new talent. Recently picking up the Japan Academy 2018 prizes for Best Film and Best Director, The Third Murder sees the great Hirokazu Kore-eda taking a break from his usual family dramas to deliver a dark legal thriller. Close Knit, the latest from Naoko Ogigami – her Rent-a-Cat was a favourite in 2013 – is a heartwarming yet poignant crowd- pleaser. Partially inspired by the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, The Sower is a quiet but probing story from new voice Yosuke Takeuchi. For this 10th edition our anime selection is particularly strong. We are honoured to welcome acclaimed screenwriter Mari Okada to Dublin for the Irish premiere of her debut feature Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, just weeks after its international premiere in Glasgow. On April 10th we present, for one night only, exclusive fan preview screenings of Studio Ponoc’s highly-anticipated first production Mary and the Witch’s Flower. We also present the latest films from Masaaki Yuasa.

  • The Otaku Lifestyle: Examining Soundtracks in the Anime Canon
THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.

  • Exotic Geeks Problematizing Japanese and Western Anime Otaku
Göteborg University Advanced Level Department of Culture, Aesthetics and Media Autumn 2006 Film Studies Advisor: Therése Andersson Exotic Geeks Problematizing Japanese and Western Anime Otaku Advanced Essay (Level C) Presented in January 2007 by Viktor Eikman Abstract Title: Exotic Geeks: Problematizing Japanese and Western Anime Otaku Author: Viktor Eikman Institution: Department of Culture, Aesthetics and Media, at Göteborg University Advisor: Therése Andersson Course: FV4100: Film Studies, Advanced Level Presented: Autumn semester 2006 Abstract: Exotic Geeks critically examines the history of the word “otaku”, used to denote various ideas related to geeky fans, from the early 1980s to the present day. The aim is to provide a foundation for future use of the term to describe concepts in aid of understanding film culture. However, most uses of the word to describe Japanese geeks have been tinted by orientalism, by general tendencies to pathologize fans, and by the historical coincidence that the word was first popularized in a media panic over a series of murders. Westerners have generally conceived of “otaku” through the lens of that Japanese panic, exoticizing them as alien super-geeks, or else appropriating the term to celebrate or condemn Western fans of Japanese exports, particularly anime (Japanese animation). Several other mutually contradictory definitions are also dealt with, especially Murakami Takashi's idea that “otaku” are those who carried the torch in sublimating the memory of the Second World War and the contradictions of Japan's long postwar humiliation as art. Murakami's theory is tested through close reading of three anime titles: Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise (1987), Gunbuster (1988) and Otaku no Video (1991).
