  • The History of Painting in Italy, Vol. V
The History Of Painting In Italy, Vol. V By Luigi Antonio Lanzi HISTORY OF PAINTING IN UPPER ITALY. BOOK III. BOLOGNESE SCHOOL. During the progress of the present work, it has been observed that the fame of the art, in common with that of letters and of arms, has been transferred from place to place; and that wherever it fixed its seat, its influence tended to the perfection of some branch of painting, which by preceding artists had been less studied, or less understood. Towards the close of the sixteenth century, indeed, there seemed not to be left in nature, any kind of beauty, in its outward forms or aspect, that had not been admired and represented by some great master; insomuch that the artist, however ambitious, was compelled, as an imitator of nature, to become, likewise, an imitator of the best masters; while the discovery of new styles depended upon a more or less skilful combination of the old. Thus the sole career that remained open for the display of human genius was that of imitation; as it appeared impossible to design figures more masterly than those of Bonarruoti or Da Vinci, to express them with more grace than Raffaello, with more animated colours than those of Titian, with more lively motions than those of Tintoretto, or to give them a richer drapery and ornaments than Paul Veronese; to present them to the eye at every degree of distance, and in perspective, with more art, more fulness, and more enchanting power than fell to the genius of Coreggio. Accordingly the path of imitation was at that time pursued by every school, though with very little method.

  • Stylistic Change & L'idea Della Bellezza in Early Modern
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: MODALITIES OF THE IDEA: STYLISTIC CHANGE & L’IDEA DELLA BELLEZZA IN EARLY MODERN ITALY James Lee Hutson, Jr., Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation Directed by: Professor Anthony Colantuono Department of Art History and Archeology In the careers of many prominent seventeenth-century painters such as Annibale Carracci, Guercino, Domenichino and even Caravaggio there is a familiar stylistic progression: each began their careers with a chiaroscuro manner rooted in Venetian and Emilian naturalism and then later shift to a markedly classicizing manner characterized by a brightening or lightening of the palette, a tendency to idealize the human form, and an insistence on composing in a series of parallel planes. The art-theoretical concept known as L’Idea della bellezza was the touchstone in cases where this stylistic phenomenon manifested itself. Developed and modified in antiquity to maintain its relevance to art theory, the Platonic Idea went through many variations and interpretative models until it was reintroduced to art theory in the Renaissance. At the same time, expectations of artists increased as the arti di disegno sought to be included among the liberal arts. Artists’ primary and secondary phases of education ensured a reading knowledge of Latin and equipped them with the ability to engage with the theoretical material of their day. This intellectual interest was reinforced by the foundations of the Florentine Accademia del Disegno, and later the Bolognese Accademia degl’Incamminati. As the number of publications by artists seemingly dwindled in the period following Mannerism, it was assumed that artists were increasingly disinterested with the complex theoretical discourse taken up by a growing number of critics and theorists.

  • Domenichino II Illustrated
Domenichino, Albani and Viola The pictures Domenichino painted before and during the stay with the Agucchi brothers seem to have been independent easel paintings, done to show his application and inventiveness with small figures in action. The Doria Flight into Egypt is a signal example of his early mastery of the new idiom of landscape with small figures, but at the same time the decorative context in which it was placed meant that it would not have had the prominence it has enjoyed in modern times - as the work of Annibale. It was the ‘viva efficacia di esprimere gli affetti che fu sua propria, destando i moti e movendo i sensi’, as Bellori put it (1672, p. 290), and this speciality would in the biographer’s words be extremely sought after ‘per essere hoggi in grandissima stima’. His early landscapes with figures had an immediate following among some of the other Bolognese painters who had come down to Rome, and the genre began to compete with the landscapes of the Northern artists like Bruegel and Brill, and Baglione writes of the goldsmith Bartolomeo Loto who made works of this kind in his workshop - they must have been quite precious editions of the new landscape form. But the main development of the Carraccesque landscape was in fact decorative, and we know of a number of interiors - and exteriors - where the new style was fashionable, from patrons like Odoardo Farnese, Pietro Aldobrandini, Scipione Borghese, Alessandro Peretti Montalto, Vincenzo Giustiniani, Cardinale Pio. The scale varied greatly, some of the individual paintings were quite large, and there were others painted outside ‘a fondo di viali’ to increase the illusion of rus in urbe.

Bologna became a centre for women artists, culminating during the seventeenth century, when at least twenty-two female artists were active in the city. It is also the only Italian city with extant self-portraits by five different women artists during 1577-1678, although a forty-year gap, between 1614 and the 1650s, interrupts an otherwise continuous tradition.

  • LA COLLEZIONE SAMPIERI, DALLA DISPERSIONE ALLA NEGAZIONE, ALL’AUSPICABI- LE VALORIZZAZIONE Marinella Pigozzi

Autors) - on his art is based to a great extent the development of the Bolognese school, which in the works of Guido Reni and Guercino won world- wide fame. To understand this importanl branch in the evolution of seventeenth- century painting, therefore we must understand the art of Lodovico", schrieb Walter Friedländer in seiner Rezension der bislang einzigen, 1939 erschienen Ludovico-Carracci-Monographie von Heinrich Bodmer (in: Art Bulletin 24,1942, p. 195).
