"There's an ick factor, that's people's first impression," said Vincent Vitale, business development manager of Aspire Food Group. Aspire, which is said to be the world's first fully automated cricket farm, is betting on people getting over the ick factor. Based in Texas, the company farms and produces a variety of edible cricket products, sold through its Aketta line. Think cricket protein flour, paleo granola and cricket protein snacks, such as whole roasted crickets and flavored roasted crickets. WHAT CRICKETS TASTE LIKE Crickets -- I'm taking Vincent's word here -- have a slight sunflower seed-like taste, with a bit of earthy nuttiness and are crispy like chips. WHY THE WORLD NEEDS CRICKETS There's long history of crickets and other insects staring in dishes from cuisines around the globe. Nearly two billion people regularly eat insects, and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization would like even more people to give them a shot. That's because insects are an incredible source of protein, 30 grams of crickets is about 20 grams of protein, compared to beef with 8 grams of protein, and farming them is much more sustainable than producing beef, poultry and fish. -

CITY OF LOS ANGELES RESOLUTION MARC MARMARO WHEREAS, Marc Marmaro was born on February 26, 1948, in the Bronx, New York; and, WHEREAS, Marmaro went on to receive a B.A. from George Washington University in 1969 and J.D. cum laude, Order of the Coif, from New York University School of Law in 1972; and, WHEREAS, in 1972, Marmaro clerked for the Honorable John J. Gibbons, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit; and, WHEREAS, Marmaro served the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of New York as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1975 to 1978; and, WHEREAS, Marmaro moved to the City of Los Angeles to join Manatt, Phelps & Phillips as a litigation associate and partner until 1981; and, WHEREAS, in 1981, Marmaro helped found the law firm Jeffer, Mangels, Butler, & Marmaro, LLP, which has grown from 11 employees to over 140 in three cities across the United States; and, WHEREAS, Marmaro is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; and, WHEREAS, in 2004, he was named California Lawyer of the Year in Intellectual Property by California Lawyer magazine for negotiating the settlement of spinal fusion technology patent disputes for $1.35 billion; and, WHEREAS, on June 30,2010, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him to the Los Angeles County Superior Court; and, WHEREAS, on August 5, 2010, Marc Marmaro was officially sworn into office as a Judge for Los Angeles County Superior Court; and, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the City Council of Los Angeles, the Mayor, and the City Attorney extends their congratulations to Marc Marmaro for his judicial appointment, outstanding achievements, and constant pursuit for justice. -

CRMA JUDGE BIOS 2014 Jeanne Abbott, Associate Professor, University of Missouri, worked for the Anchorage Daily News for nearly 15 years and covered the oil boom, native land claims issues and the exploding growth of a frontier city. After earning a Ph.D. in journalism from Missouri, Abbott also spent time at the Sacramento Bee and Des Moines Register before becoming a full‐‐time faculty member. Julie Vosburgh Agnone is Vice President of Editorial Operations for National Geographic Kids Publishing and Media. During her career at National Geographic, Julie has written, edited, and managed magazines and books for children, educational media for schools, and CD‐ROMs for beginning and ESL readers. She has worked on various special initiatives for National Geographic, including international editions, strategic partnerships, and electronic publishing. Danita Allen Wood is the co‐owner and editor‐in‐chief of Missouri Life magazine, which she and her husband purchased and revived in 1999. Danita learned the magazine business at Meredith Corporation, which publishes Better Homes & Gardens, Midwest Living, Successful Farming, and many other magazines. She returned to her home state of Missouri in 1995 to teach at the Missouri School of Journalism, holding the Meredith Chair until 2005, when she decided to devote her full time to Missouri Life. Dave Anderson is a photographer and filmmaker whose work can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Cocoran Gallery and in the pages of Esquire, Stern and ESPN the Magazine. In 2011 Anderson won a National Magazine Award for his “SoLost” video series created for the Oxford American. -

The Current study aims to explore how authoritative and transaCtional leadership styles result with various Challenges during crisis communication and management. The crises experienced by The Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Toyota, FaCebook and the United Airlines companies are explored as case studies. The analysis is not limited with the Crisis proCesses, but also questions the efficiency of leadership models embraced by managers of these two organizations. Becca Kleinstein on Martha Stewart Yes, you read that correctly – I chose Martha Stewart as the leader I admire. I’m guessing that quizzical look on your face has something to do with the fact that she spent 5 months in federal prison, or that she is known for being a ruthless tyrant in the professional domain, or even the fact that it is very publicly known that she and her daughter don’t get along (her daughter even wrote a book about their poor relationship!). However, Martha Stewart possesses several leadership traits that I admire and she has been able to harmonize all four of her domains. Marth Kostyra was born in 1941, and was raised in New Jersey by her middle class parents with her four brothers and sisters. Her knack for crafts was obvious from her childhood as she learned crafting, gardening, sewing, cooking, and preserve-jarring from her close-knit Polish American family. Her planning was also evident in her youth. She frequently babysat for the children of Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees and organized birthday parties for the four boys. Martha won partial scholarship to Barnard College and modeled on the side to pay expenses. She initially intended to major in chemistry, but switched to art, European history, and architectural history. She married then law student Andrew Stewart after her sophomore year in college, and after taking a year off from school, earned her degree. Martha had her only child, Alexis, in 1965, and worked as model and stockbroker on Wall Street until 1973. -

THESIS WRITE MY THESIS: MAGAZINES, BLOGS AND DESIGN…WIKI-STYLE Brittany Watson Interior Design In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Art Corcoran College of Art and Design Washington DC Spring 2010 2 Thesis Statement Design blogs and other forms of social media have assumed a more prominent role over the traditional printed magazine in disseminating information, creating a sense of community, encouraging artistic collaboration and identifying new tastes, which is explored in this thesis through author-mediated crowd-sourcing through a blog called Write My Thesis leading to an online magazine, Baker Street. Abstract The day Domino magazine folded in January of 2009, a silence was heard throughout the design community. This marked yet another design magazine that had fallen victim to declining advertisement sales in recent years. Until this point, magazines were at the forefront of identifying design trends and up-and-coming designers, while providing one of the only locations to provide guides of where to find products and how to assemble looks. The rise in social media, including blogs, vlogs, wikis, podcasts, wall postings, and photosharing, has quickly assumed a more prominent role in the wake of printed magazines. Like Wikipedia, this thesis is mass-collaboratively written by the users of the Web 2.0 through crowd-sourcing the content on a wiki site with the author acting as mediator and main contributor. The aim is to discover the benefits of social media versus 3 traditional print and how it affects design. The project describes the qualities that made the magazine successful in its golden age and how they eventually grew outdated as social media became more popular. -

Beard nurtured a genera- tion of American chefs and cookbook authors who have changed the way we eat. James Andrew Beard was born on May 5, 1903, in Portland, Oregon, to Elizabeth and John Beard. His mother, an independent English woman passionate about food, ran a boarding house. His father worked at Portland’s Customs House. The family spent summers at the beach at Gearhart, Oregon, fishing, gathering shellfish and wild berries, and cooking meals with whatever was caught. He studied briefly at Reed College in Portland in 1923, but was expelled. Reed claimed it was due to poor scholastic performance, but Beard maintained it was due to his homosexuality. Beard then went on the road with a theatrical troupe. He lived abroad for several years study- ing voice and theater but returned to the United States for good in 1927. Although he kept trying to break into the theater and movies, by 1935 he needed to supplement what was a very non-lucra- Biography tive career and began a catering business.
